And I'm still on 1080 p, have been for about 6 years now.....

Really wish a g sync 4k 27 to 35 inch 90 Hz ips display would hit a decent price point.

And yes I realize I'm asking for the world here, but I can dream.

That's 16k actually for normal 20/20 vision. It's not the limit for displays though, we've had this argument for 10 years now with 1080p, but you are not meant to see the pixels. Having more resolution than you 'need' is advantageous.

I had a discussion with my friends yesterday about why I thought it sucks to be getting old nowadays(I'm 33). And it's about how I'm going to be so old when all this cool stuff actually become widely available at a somewhat affordable price. I'll probably be in my mid to late forties when we can go into a store and buy 8k TV, a really advance AR visor, or a VR headset with 4k screen that allows full body movement(with other accessories obviously) for $500.

I have no idea where technology will be in 10-15 years, I'm just talking out of my ass. But I see my little nieces and nephews and envy how they'll have all these amazing toys to play with and will be to watch Youtube in 8k when they're in High School. I on the other hand will be approaching my 50's. Sure I can still love it then, just wish I could have had these things at 20 instead.

So with that said, we're totally getting all those things at half a grand in 10 years, right?

I'm which case it should take up a half of one TV screen rather than a quarter. Because if it takes a quarter of one screen then with 4 screens that's 16 times 1080P.

Unless 8K is 16times 1080P I'm which case why call it 8K when the reason 4K is called so is because it's 4 times 1080P.

1080p is 2k, because it is actually referring to the 1920 part of the resolution. (1920x1080)
2160p is 4k, because it is actually referring to the 3840 (or 4096 in case of cinema) part of the resolution (3840x216)
8k is referring to the 7680 part of the resolution (7680×4320)

It's 4x but the naming structure refers to only the horizontal aspect, which is 2x. So 1920x1080 is 1080p (2K) And 3480x2160 is 2160p (4K). And 7680x4320 is 4320p (8K). It is twice the vertical aspect and twice the horizontal, so 4x more pixels overall.

All I can think of is how 8k could accommodate, like, the entire NES library.

EDIT: I wrote that as a half joke, but if I can still do basic maths, it's actually close to that. There's enough screen estate to fit 540 256x240 games in there, NES library is around 700 titles.

Because 1080p is talking about the smaller (in widescreen) height of the screen but 4K about the wider 4000 odd pixel part of it depending on your reckoning.

Resolution wise, 4K is basically 4 1080p displays, 2x resolution bump either side. 8K is 2x on either dimension of a 4K display so 16x the pixels of 1080p.
It's a lot of pixels.

I remember seeing 16K at SIGGRAPH with basically tons of 4K monitors with the bezels removed to make a rather seamless 16K image. Consumer 8K may seem like a complete far off area in computing, but really will be just around the corner.

Some parts of the TV and broadcast industries are considering leapfrogging 4K in favour of 8K. The next 5 years will be interesting imo.

Just to be sure, that's four times 4K right? 1080p fits in four times in 4K, and then 4K an additional 4 times in 8K (meaning 16 times 1080p in 8K)? Absolutely insane!

Outside of consoles there's little a devleoper has to actually do to 'support' 8k, aside from proper UI scaling.

I think it's the opposite actually. Aliasing is as big a part of IQ as any of those things you mentioned. You might have the most beautiful lighting but what use is it when you have aliasing and shimmering everywhere which breaks the immersion. High resolution gives games that smooth "Pixar" look and just brings the entire image together.

Agreed.

IQ can have a huge impact on the experience. When I play Deus Ex (the original) at 4K (or even 1080p with 8xSSAA) I'm astonished by the terrific image quality. In some ways it can triumph a modern game at 1080p max settings without SSAA.

This just proves we need bigger monitors.

A 40" running 16K with 4x4 SGSSAA should do nicely. Doesn't have to run at more than 24fps either.
