Mafia 3 |OT| "Family isn't who you're born with, it's who you die for"

is there an ending where you
don't kill Sal? It says "decide his fate", so I stabbed him and kicked him out the window, but I was wondering if you could just walk away

I sort of want to see what happens
if you don't do any prompt. He probably just kills you with the gun on his desk

On my first playthrough i paused to see if it was just going to be this indefinite standoff until i held square...

After a few seconds he picks the gun up and shoots himself in the head

Well mystery solved then. That answers the questions :) Thanks

No worries. If anything i'm looking forward to the second encounter even more :)

Speaking of great but small details (Royal hotel spoilers)

If you do the mission by going in the front door, when you throw derazio out the window he lands on a cop car and when you leave the hotel there's a ton of cops in the lobby and then you have to outrun them

If you go in silent by stealing the car and coming in through the basement, derazio falls on an ordinary car and then when leaving the lobby you're faced with a ton of regular enemies that you have to kill and get away from and as you leave the hotel there will be cops a few blocks away about to arrive on the scene.

I thought that was really cool

Is there no achievement for getting all the collectibles ? I'm about to settle down and explore the map, really looking forward to taking it all in after that story concluded.

Loved the game a lot. I hope the DLCs add some great set piece mission variety to the world of New Bordeaux.

Can we? I hope we can.

End game spoilers
I chose to stay and rule with my underbosses and i was able to keep playing after the credits. I don't know if they'd let you continue to explore given the way the other endings play out but who knows.

How is the original score and how is it worked into the game? For instance, is there ambient music while freeroaming similar to some of the earlier Assassin's Creed games? I've always felt that was important to lending historical games atmosphere.

I left the city, and it booted me to the main menu after the credits. Does anyone know if collectibles hold over between games?

So what difficulty is everybody playing at? Does it make sense to play on hard given the fact that the AI is not very clever?

Unfortunally hard mode didn't make the enemies more clever. They are only a bit more resistent. And since some of the game over loadings are incredibly long on PS4, I prefer to play on normal, which seems more appropriate in my opinion.

I've managed to put a couple of hours into this game and love the story so far.
Have got to say though, the side missions are repetitive as fk. Not sure how they thought gating story missions behind them was a good idea.

I'm loving the narrative and story missions but the repetitive side missions are starting to grind. They take forever. I'm thinking about putting Mafia on hold and coming back to it in a few months. I'll go play Tomb Raider and Battlefield.

Perhaps my favourite moments are the missions in the Bayou. Especially at nighttime when it's raining, running through the bushes and stuff in my military jacket slitting throats of thugs left and right with my Bowie knife it's basically a Rambo simulator. There's no way Lincoln does NOT get PTSD Vietnam flashbacks when he's running through the dense forest like that.

The racket sidemissions like "steal the truck with moonshine" are completely throwaway, but I totally love systematically clearing out a whole camp without alerting anyone. It's as mundane as it comes, but somehow it's super rewarding. I guess it speaks volumes on the game's proper stealth and sneaking mechanics.

Also cannot give enough credit for the ragdolling effects, I'm struggling to come up with a game with more rewarding physics when shooting someone. The way people drop [over]dramatically after a headshot is so well done.

The Bayou at night is the best place in this game. The perfect song for driving through there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIjUY3pjN8E

Is it worth finishing all of the optional missions? I've finished Vito's and the "ending" was a little disappointing, with no real resolution. I didn't finish the missions of his sidekick though.

Any repercussions to the ending?

Will giving a racket be enough to keep a friend from betraying you? It's been a while since I've given a region to Burke and he's getting pissy, but the one I'm currently on makes more sense to give to Vito since his perks are better.

I don't want to order a Paddy Whack if I don't have to.

I'm pretty sure if you give Burke the rackets and the region to Vito, those rackets will then be given to Vito which means Burke would get even more mad because he helped you out with the rackets and you throw him out in the end to give the district to someone else.

It doesn't matter which districts you give them. I just gave them the neighborin districts (Barclay and Frisco to Cassandra, Downtown and Southdowns to Vito, Tickfaw and French Ward to Burke) and none of them turned on me.

I'm moving along here. Unlocked side missions for underbosses and their lieutenants. But I cant progress on the LT missions. I go to the marker and here isn't anything there. Specifically the missions for Alma and Emmanuel and the Irish chick. Do I need to progress the story before I can do more of those?

Yeh you do...alot of people had the same problem. The game just does a pretty poor job of explaining that.

I still can't find a damned garbage barge. I've been looking, too.

That's the only thing holding me back.

I just killed Uncle Lou on the boat/in the bayou, then had the attack squad sicked on me by the heroin dealer.

I found him the first time, but died because of a shitload of baddies/cops, then respawned at a bar. As soon as I spawned and went outside, they were there in front of the bar, and that kept happening. I died a couple of times, but discovered I didn't have grenades equipped, used them and did it easily.

So, at what point do you stop getting errors :/ I've had the game drop to the PS4 error screen 5 times today.

Stop? Never.

I had two crashes like that over 9 hours. Then, during my next session (5 hours), I had four crashes, most of which occurred near the end of my time with it.

Then, today, I had two.

So is anyone else unable to get the update file? My ps4 refuses to download it and there is no way the patch is larger than my available space

So, like 9 crashes today and then this shit:

https://youtu.be/O0ptB2_R5l8

I'm reinstalling on the PS4, but if I get another crash I'm trading this crap in -- there is no excuse for garbage software like this.

Downloaded fine for me. It's only around 150MB.

I'm redownloading it now -- it's 2.648 GB according to the PS4 download manager. I believe the PS4 requires you to have twice the storage space available to install anything.

Finally get to post on the Gaf after years of lurking.

I really don't get the hate for this game. :p I agree with the repetitiveness but 6 districts taken over, and I literally am taking 1-5 mins max to clear an area of interest. So winning a racket takes less than 20 minutes.

The AI sucks a fair bit, but that let's you act out massive Rambo fetishes. This was a problem I'd faced with games like Uncharted 4 and Deus EX Mankind Divided. Such a brilliant map, so many ways to get in, but it's all choked behind enemies who restrict your movement. I ended up camping in cover and taking potshots.

The slightly easier nature of Mafia 3 allows me to literally explore the map while i'm capping people. I move a lot more, flank them, hide, snipe, and basically push the combat to all possibilities on my first playthrough itself (i never replay games, except Bloodborne :p).

And literally all I need is a pistol+sniper/shotgun depending on interior/exterior. No RPG style waiting till end of the game to get super powerful.

The atmosphere, the driving (oh god so good), the gun sounds and combat feel (my TV audio sucks and it sounds brilliant, can only imagine what you Dolby guys are experiencing), brilliant missions once you've cleared a district, and general all-round bad-assery from the get go is what make this game so addictive.

I'm taking my time, 3-4 hours a day :p and work is suffering, its that much fun.

I just had something hilarious happen during one of the missions in the bayou. I'd just rescued someone and a bunch of enemies showed up to stop me, so I decided to call in one of Vito's Hit Squads to lend a hand. A few seconds later, the squad suddenly popped into existence about 50 yards to my left, way out in the swamp. I ran to where I had clear line of sight to them and watched in horror as they were devoured by a pack of hungry alligators.

Lesson learned: Never, ever call in a Hit Squad if you're out in the bayou--especially if you're surrounded by the swamp!

Don't know if anyone care
You probably don't
. The latest patch seams to have fixed the frame pacing issue on ps4, it feels allot smoother.

Just beat the story.
I chose to rule the city alone and GODDAMN that was a satisfying end surprise.

Also, the mid-credits scene is fucking awesome.

The first 5 hours and the last hour of this game are so great. It's such a shame that 90% of what made up the meat of the game is so mediocre.

I'm liking the game so far, but the UI is terrible, who thought it was a good idea?

I agree. It feels like a Ubisoft game with useless stuff everywhere (like the permanent current objective).
And I really don't like the "augmented reality GPS" (i thought they were glitching signals at first by the way), I would rather have an icon on the map without any GPS so I can learn the map and not just follow directions, like LA Noire I believe.

What don't you like about it?

It's everywhere, especially when driving
maxresdefault.jpg

This constant things are all completely useless for me:
- mission name+next objective
- ugly rearview mirror
- square with the distance floating everywhere
Plus:
- Indication at every corner
- big banner (not sure if it's the right term) in the middle of the screen everytime you do something
Some simple options could solve everything

A word of warning to everyone. This Koopa guy messaged me this question on PSN yesterday, i didn't see the message until this morning, by which time he'd sent another message saying..

"I asked you something little cunt".

Fucking idiot.

I don't even think it's a badly designed hud, at least aesthetically -- it's just I personally would prefer to turn off a bunch of stuff, heck, I could even play without the mini-map considering the turn signs are displayed in the world. I accidentally killed one or two sub bosses in my first playthrough, so theoretically it would take another two playthroughs for the platinum, which is a bit much. I'll still playthrough it again, when the dlc comes out, but I'm holding off for a few little improvements between now and then.

The "Current objective" in the upper left corner is such a needless information.

Par for the course for game developers, it's the norm to have bad UI design in video games for some reason.

I care! That's great news. I'm holding off buying for a bit, but it's good to know some issues will be sorted by the time I do. I rented and played about two hours. Liked what I saw.

Did I miss out on any more information/story bits from one of the side missions?

I was on a "Are We Cool?" Mission and brought the truck of reefer back. I parked it and it said mission complete. Marcano hit squad shows up and ran me over with their car but before they did for a split second, I swear it said the objective was to "Talk to Emmanuel" before I died. I come back and the next objective is just to pick up another boat. I also ran two trucks for Alma and didn't have to go back to talk to her so maybe there isn't any more conversations right now.

There is definitely an annoying bug of having no prompt when interrogating someone during combat. Two times I've met up with a racket boss or informant and killed some guy they were with then went to interrogate and had no conversations with them or a prompt to Kill or Spare. You can press X or O and have it go through but one time it said an informant escaped even though it progressed the mission to the next objective.
