Breath of the Wild is the official subtitle for Zelda U/NX, first gameplay trailer

The aliasing in those zelda screenshots up above is horrendous, hopefully its just an issue from still working on the game

It was already fairly clear back at E3, but it's now pretty much safe to say why the Sheikah Slate/Game Pad functionality was removed from the Wii U version despite obviously having been part of the original game design: because it can't be replicated on the single-screen Switch hardware, and Nintendo wanted to avoid anything that might make that version appear inferior.

I guess we gotta wait to see how it runs officially and fully optimized. If it can do steady 30 fps I'll be happy. If it somehow can do 60 fps I'll be ecstatic

Based on what we see here (40-50 seconds in) I'm saying there's no chance it will be 60fps. As you said though we need to wait and see how it officially runs. Plenty of games have performance issues while they're still in development

Barring any significant performance or gameplay improvements on the Switch, I think I'll still be getting this on the Wii U so I can utilize the second screen for maps/items etc.

What are you guys thinking? Wait for more information on the differences between the versions?

Maps, yeah, but I'm pretty sure no items on the second screen. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

So if there still are people that think these graphics are too cartoony or even childish...

the art style is extremly variable. It can go from bright to dark in a matter of seconds. See:

Serious moments and darker atmospheres are definately possible with this art style
I just hope that there are a few areas with a dense atmosphere and subdued colors, I'm a little sick of looking at bright green grass.

The shoulder buttons from both Joy-Con and Pro-Controller seem to be closer to the N64 buttons. Do you think the rumours about scrollable are still on or can we ditch this theory?

Why not just look at the thing. :)

Regular ass shoulder button.

Came here to express concerns about frame rate. I don't even care all that much, but I just want it to be relatively consistent.

Also, can we get someone to change the thread title?

Doesn't the Switch utilise the handheld part as a second screen? It would be a big missed opportunity if it doesn't. It basically is a Wii U Gamepad. Or do you have to plug in the handheld part into the docking station for it to display on TV?

The recent "Weather" video sure doesn't give much credence to GameExplain's rumor (4 dungeons, 100+ mini dungeons, important weather, technology vs nature themes). It seems like the only types of weather we've seen is rain or high wind, and the high wind seems like it only applies to certain set areas. I imagine there will be other weather effects such as blizzards or dust storms, but those seem par the course for an open world game like this.

Oh, didn't see this before.

In the NS trailer, you see Epona riding towards Link, and instead of stopping for Link to get on - Epona just keeps running and Link grabs and climbs her while moving.

That's pretty cool.

Did Breath of the Wild on the Switch look a little choppy to you guys? They've still got 5 months to polish it up but other games looked far smoother.

Yep, when they switched to mobile, it did indeed look choppy to me. Could be a lot of things though, since it was most likely not filmed, but edited in gameplay.

I think it's just Nintendo being honest about how it'll run in handheld mode. Edited in gameplay wouldn't be low framerate for just no reason, video editing does not have any such limitations.

It doesn't. The dock has no processing, it's just an HDMI out charger for the device.

So, the music this time around will be pretty important in that it serves as a cue telling the player which location used to be in this area. I can imagine a faint Lon Lon ranch melody playing in the area depicted in the new official screenshot. Players might not realize where they are right away, but only do so because the music sounds somehow familiar. That would be a pretty clever use of music!

So much things to do/time to spend on this open world Zelda, I like the idea of playing it on the go and not just at home.

That's neat. Thanks for the info! It's consistent with the old TGA footage then, too. Just in terms of the horses being wild. I wonder if we will have a horse we name and regularly ride or if we will just find any horse when we can, or both.

So I noticed minutes ago (in a closed thread) that they had cut the WiiU version in favor of the Switch one?? not getting use of the WiiU controller for the map and items inventory???

And with the excuse of not having a second screen distracting the player witch was the focus idea for WiiU...

WTF nintendo... really... WTF
I'm done with them.

I guess I must go and see how is the scene for the WiiU right now and what firmware is the last one I have.

No you're not.

But I agree it's a bad move. Having the map/inventory on the gamepad makes all the sense in the world.

Calm down, Member. The WiiU version has not been canceled.

And did you miss the E3 footage? Second screen usage was removed a long time ago. I very much rather have the map and inventory on the main screen, thankyouverymuch.

Has there been a comparison between NX footage and Wii U footage?

Edit: Lol I mean Switch
The footage from the Switch reveal video has sightly better lighting for the grass and a bit less fog, but it's possible that it's only like that because it showed a less intensive moment of gameplay with fewer enemies to render. It's also possible that it was just taken at a different time of day. So we aren't really sure if it is the NS version or not. I'll try to find the comparison picture.

Edit: the new footage is on the left, old footage on the right.

Glad the Switch seems decent enough that I will get to play this.

Have they actually listed out differences between the wiiU version and the Switch one? This might play a big factor on whether i get a Switch right away or not.

So, what are all the things that the Wii U Gamepad screen does? If I get the Switch version, I want to know some conveniences I might miss out on.

I feel like no one watched any of the E3 footage.

There is no WiiU screen or controller specific functionality for BotW.

I'm a bit sad that the Switch version of this game probably won't have substancial upgrades in the graphical area other than maybe a better framerate... This will be another Twilight Princess GCN-Wii situation, where the game was exactly the same graphically on Wii but in widescreen and 480p.

Bright side of the story is, Zelda Switch will look amazing in comparison, in 2022...

Do people really think the games footage during the Switch trailer was real and not just videos running on the consoles or even edited into the trailer? No game in the trailer has hud except Kart and I'd say no one really touched the controls in the trailer.

Shit, I'm in awe at people even debating if when undocking the Switch the game dropped more frames. My head hurts.

I won't consider differences between versions until there's official Switch trailer or footage, if they do, or until someone has both versions to compare.

And I'm VERY interested in the game and on deciding platform, because I don't have a Wii U and I'd like the best version, so I have to buy either console, ideally Switch if they also port both HD Wii U Zeldas.

Not a big difference but definitely noticeable. It's a beautiful game and I'm sure that type of art style scales well.

Footage of people playing that you see in trailers is never actually footage of those people playing.

This is true. The game looked more like the videos from the initial reveal. Still, i would expect a considerable difference. Mainly because this is a launch title for the Switch, and one that can make wiiU owners favor getting one because of the significant upgrade. Myself included, if the game is better, and performs better than on the wiiU, i'll be getting a switch for that reason.

Somehow I totally missed (or forgot) no map on the GamePad (very surprising IMO) and then found out in that same (now closed) thread mentioned above earlier today... so... BOTW for NX it is.

Weird. Weird, weird weird. I guess a big part of it must come down to not wanting Switch players to feel like the Wii U version is better....
