Is there anyone else who is going to miss the 3D feature of the 3DS if there won't be a direct successor (which is very likely)?
I woke in the moddle of the night and as I couldn't fall asleep again, I picked my N3DS and launchen ACNL to wander around a little bit. I startet to play with the 3D slider to compare how my sleepy eyes will react to the alteration of the 3D intensity, and then I actually noticed how much more lively the world of ACNL looks with the 3D in comparison to 2D. It was quite new for me since I practically never played with 3D off. The game in 2D just looked so faded, pale and boring. It felt like there's something missing. I am sure as hell gonna miss the 3D in the future with Switch being the only device released by Nintendo.

Yeah, I'm going to miss it. It's not a dealbreaker, and to be honest, I probably played more with the 3D off than with it on, but there are certain games where it works incredibly well (e.g. pixel art games, like Shovel Knight and Shantae, look absolutely fantastic with the 3D on).

Sorry if this has been touched on already, but just for my own curiosity, has Nintendo themselves mentioned inline multiplayer even once yet? The trailer seemed to show local multiplayer exclusively. I don't think Nintendo would be dumb enough to not in use it, but...it's not the most unbelievable thing in the world.

And people call Nintendo out of touch. In what world is this even remotely a possibility?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Just like people thinking there will be no touchscreen because they didnt show it off during the trailer.

I mean really ? Yeah lets miss out on a massive amount of content because of reasons.

Nintendo wanting you to be able to dock the console and not miss out on controls seems like a pretty good reason tbh.

It's a back to basics machine where BC is sacrificed in the name of a more clear message. I'm ok with that.

But it really isn't, Nintendo are also making smart phone games that will almost certainly end up on this thing and will also want easy porting of smart phone games, The're not going to realisea tablet in 2016 without touchscreen when they popularized touch screens in the first place.

It is possible that it has a touchscreen, hardware-wise, which is off-limits or of very restrict use for developers.

When Nintendo kicks off marketing in January I fully expect a a Super Bowl commercial. Good lord you can't ask for better advertising and a good month before the release.

Awesome! I think I will end up buying one of these on day one. Never liked Nintendo consoles but this one appeals to me.

Few games look really good in 3D. Most runs bad and looks horrible with 3D on. It's really inconsistent. So yeah it won't be really missed.

I guess it could be that Nintendo will introduce categories of software that cannot be used while in docked mode, but they don't want to confuse the public with that nugget of information just yet.

I'd love it to be another Cube. This industry needs a 3rd player and I think the Switch is a well considered bet that is still true to their approach to gaming.

The key is gonna be price. They were able to aggressively price the Cube and it ended up being a great value. I'm hoping that the rumors of a very favorable deal from nVidia are in fact true because the SoC is likely a huge part of the component costs. Thankfully the Tegra is the perfect fit on both a performance level and a product nvidia needs to increase volume on to justify their investment. Like Intel they have struggled to get OEMs on board despite having perhaps the 2nd best overall ARM offering around after Apple's (but more focused on gaming performance).

The paranoid part of me has to admit I'm never quite sure about nvidia hardware partnerships though. The experience MS had with them on the OG Xbox is in my mind at least partially responsible for their inability to secure the kinds of contracts that companies with less impressive products like Qualcomm are signing left and right. But if they can make it work then it's a solid partnership with plenty of room for future expansion.

Can't wait to play around with one.

This seriously isn't a joke, though: WHY is Autodesk a partner for the Switch? Do you think we're going to get some kind of design game that you use a trimmed down drafting program to design things and put them against other ...things? This is keeping me up at night.

Game engine most likely.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
it's a really neat console but nnnghhh all I'm most excited about is Mario and Zelda. Mouth is salivating just thinkin' about these two games

like, they could've made it in the shape of a potato and I'd still buy it for those games (that, and the fact I bought every Nintendo console in the past 30 years)

Since the Switch succeeding Gamecube thread has closed, what is it about the Gamecube that people want in the Switch? Personally, I can't stand all the peripheral crap consoles have now. Xbone and PS4 feel very bloated by their features. Gamecube was elegant in its simplicity. Switch on, put disc in, play game. I'd like this to return for Switch. Make it start up quickly, have very basic media features and Miiverse. That's it.

Plugins for Maya or other Autodesk products or it's game engine.

That's basically every console from Gamecube era and earlier. for what it's worth though, being a cart-based system makes it fast to boot up games like the current handhelds.

I don't think there is any other company for which I root for them to succeed harder than Nintendo. I've bought all their home consoles and this will be no different. And I cannot fucking wait.

I think that definitely is what I would like from the Switch: not the fancy detachable controller multiplayer, but the simple console experience, combined with the ability to take that experience on the go (and the other way around as well: putting traditional handheld games on the big screen). I will most likely use the Switch as a regular handheld while on the go (i.e. keep the joycons on the side of the screen) and use the pro controller while playing on the big screen. For me, Switch is the best of both worlds: playing different style games (handheld or console games) whenever, wherever and however I want, without some inconvenient gimmick forced down my throat.

I definitely hope they can find some way to make a deal with third party regarding day one patches and stuff: perhaps (as some have suggested) save it to the cartridge? Certainly the fact that a game doesn't need to install to the system is a nice bonus, since that alleviates the worry about system space and having to manage storage space, which just distracts from the pure gaming experience (this stands or falls, of course, with whether patches have to be saved on the system, as then you would still need to manage storage space).

Although I do think PS4 and Xbox One are still pretty simple to handle, the Switch has the opportunity, by virtue of its cartridges and its portability, to be the ultimate accessible console of this gen, and that's why I'm excited for it (hardware-wise, of course the Nintendo games draw me in big time).

Not really a big topic of discussion I guess, but by now I really love the name of the console. It just is fun to say and it's so much better than just adding numbers, letters or other shit to your existing machine imo.

They could do both. E.g. Mario maker could use touch controls for optimal level creation, but also fall back to controller controls when docked.

I have to say, with the reports of analog triggers (please be true), asymmetrical stick configuration, and the Switch Pro Controller even having concave stick surfaces, it seems Nintendo is completely cutting the bullshit with their controller design choices. They've listened to the fans and given the majority what they want. I applaud them for this.

The asymmetrical stick placement is one hundred percent a consequence of their strategy in terms of detachable controllers. A sensible decision, but not one that they preferred, I bet.

Good point.

Btw, do we have any indication that the track portion which attaches the Joy-Cons may be depressable like shoulder buttons when detached? I have a feeling they won't be, but it would certainly be nice.

I though that were the assembly mechanism, but shoulder buttons would definitely be nice of cause.

I'd hope so, but I think the switch/connect mechanism is going to be already such a delicate and crucial part of the console that I don't expect them to fit shoulder buttons in just for the sake of durability.

I didn't notice this one, that's nice, this pro controller is a locked purchase for me. Even though it's ugly as hell.

I just had a idea last night:

What if the next handheld to replace 3DS Nintendo talked about was a Nintendo Smartphone?

Just think about the possibilities. A Nintendo Phone, with the same tech as NS (just smaller and more elegant) and a custom Android OS on it for around 500-600$ directly compete against Apple and Samsung. Why would people buy a Apple smartphone when they can have a Nintendo Smartphone with all console games on it? I can totally see that in 2018 happening.

A Nintendo Phone which can run every Android game, every Nintendo game and every big AAA game third party developers have on the NS. Like the NS, you can hook it up to your TV and to go you can hook your NS controllers (or smaller versions of them) It would be THE place fo play and replacing regular smartphones as main gaming devices to go.

It would totally make a revolution in mobile gaming. Instead of these half assed mobile games, you get full console experiences on your Nintendo smartphone. It would be exclusive, because it runs only on the custom Android hardware and on the custom Tegra Parker chip.

How does that idea sound to you?
HAHAHA......No.
The idea of Nintendo entering the smartphone market now is highly unlikely to happen. First of all would you get a smaller phone with more likely smaller battery only last 4-5 hours a charge......didn't think so.
It wouldn't be as "elegant" as you think it would have to be thick and bulky, file this under wishful thinking.
Trust we all have these wishful thinking moments.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start making different separate joy-con controllers you can buy with different control set ups, symmetrical, scroll wheels, whatever the possibilities are out there.

Been thinking about the potential launch lineup, and I think this could end up having the best launch lineup of any system ever. Zelda is a lock for launch. I think it's likely that either Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon is launch if not both. Nintendo will also probably have some sort of showcase new IP for launch. The potential for third party releases for launch though? I think it could be getting quite a bit. Resident Evil 7 for launch? Given the way Ubisoft support new platforms they'll have something on it for sure. The least I expect from them at launch is Just Dance and Watch Dogs 2. Could Sonic Mania be a launch title? COD will almost certainly be there. I expect some notable indie releases on it for launch. I think we'll be getting a pretty damn good launch lineup.

Can someone help me figure out storage? I'm the type that likes the ease of a full game downloaded onto my machine. I imagine we'll be able to hook some sort of external hard drive up to the thing but what happens when I want to run around and take with me on the go? Will it all storage all he on some massive SD card?

It'll likely use SD cards in the system itself, & maybe allow you to use an external drive for the dock if there's certain games you'd only want to play at home (which would tie into Emily Rogers' report of there being one USB 3.0 port in addition to the 2 2.0 ports). If I recall, SD cards these days can go up to 2TB, so additional storage shouldn't be that much of an issue (hopefully the Switch supports SDXC so that said cards can work).

This is what I am thinking too. I kinda hoped we would have that 3D Mario-game shown in the trailer for launch but that's probably not happening :(

Woah 2TB?! Ok I guess I'm not too worried at all.

I wonder if I can have an external hard drive attached to the dock and a SD card in the hand held with the ability to swap games and their data out to either or when I feel like it.

Like maybe I know I'm only going to be playing a few games on the go so I keep like 20 games I'm not interested in carrying around on the hard drive at home but keep my favorite 10 games with me stored in the portable as I run around town.

That or you just transfer games between the internal storage and an external HD hooked up to the dock so you just keep what you're currently wanting to play on the go installed on the tablet is my guess.

The weird thing about potential external drive compatibility is that you wouldn't be able to do the whole "switch" thing.

I could see Nintendo only allowing SD cards as additional storage for that reason.
