iOS Gaming October 2016 | When Ember leaves start to fall

Bit the bullet on Egggg. For $2, I don't feel like I got ripped off. I'm torn on whether I'm actually enjoying myself, or not, however. The game is gorgeous. All of the little subtle animations in the characters are just adorable. The game is a satisfying platformer that introduces new elements to its gameplay in a good manner that makes sense and doesn't overwhelm.

But I kind of hate the controls. They're awkward and I oftentimes find myself missing a jump because of it. Tap on the right side and you automatically start running to the right. Tap on the right again to jump. Tap left to change directions at anytime. Makes sense, and sounds simple enough, but either I'm stupid or just too tired to be playing, but I kept getting myself killed.

Despite that, I'm compelled to keep playing. It has a ton of levels complete with hidden areas (that are hidden very, very well) to find, so it's absolutely worth $2. It's $2.

The Bug Butcher is just as I expected, and then some.

Glorious, reminds me the frantic days of Lost Socks, despite the different gameplay mechanics, but with the same colorful graphics, attention to details and great animations.

A bit harder than the Steam counterpart, but that was expected.
Controls are spot on and I could complete the same worlds of the Steam demo (which I played to death last 3 days) without issues.
I wouldn't mind a slightly spaced out control arrows tough, but maybe I just have to accustom myself to them.
No problems with the buttons.

Maintaining the combos and using the powerups is fundamental to both survive and get an high score.
Mastering it is not trivial, while trying to stay alive.

If you were looking for a FRANTIC action title/pang clone...look no further.

Plays great on a iPhone 6S.

After any level you can see your score against your GC friends, which is always a plus.
I hope many in my friend list plays this game, but I wonder how I add them now with iOS 10.
I read you do that via iMessage....how do you do that?

So as I know it won't last, let me brag a bit.

I just did a 119 combo in Bug Butcher and got the top world leaderboard spot in level 5 :p

I was never able to reach such a combo with the Steam version, so it bodes well for the controls so far.

Bought The Bug Butcher and... is the same thing as the Steam version... now on mobile... better than ever since it can be played on the go. Amazing game. Controls are spot on and gameplay is as good as ever.

Also bought Eggggg but havent tried it yet

Kind of agree with this. The earning of "energy" is especially annoying. The changes as you earn back things like eyes and ears and how it impacts gameplay definitely is a cool twist. I haven't gotten far enough into the game to know if that novelty wears offf.

The idea is pretty unique though. I'll play it some more and let you know if I have any more thoughts.

Great feedback thanks!

I think I will pick up Bug Butcher on Xboc One instead. I probably prefer the controller support.

The game supports MFi Controllers if you have one.

So it does fully support MFi on iOS? The gameplay works perfectly on my Shield TV but I cannot navigate most of the menus which renders it unplayable after an initial game (because it automatically proceeds to the next level).

Hope they fix that on the Android side.

Still glad to hear people are loving it as much as I do. Fantastic game.

WOAH.

Those bosses/elevator levels in Bug Butcher!!!

What an awesome gem!!!
I've completely lost my thumb sensibility due to too much playing, the game surely is that addicting.

I've unlocked many new weapons already, but I still like the ice freeze plus blue ray of doom combo the most.
Rocket launcher is great too.

SO SATYSFYING, especially when the screen is full of aliens and you just watch your combo meter going up and up and up...
Awesome.

If you are looking for an action shooter/bullet hell (wait till you see those green slimes....OUT OF THE FUCKING WALLS!!!!) look no further.

I'll probably sleep tonight with the scientist screams in my mind.

It should, haven't tried yet.

My Stratus does not work anymore since iOS 10 unfortunately.

Dang that's dumb. Hope 10.1 will solve that.

Nintendo Switch is EXACTLY what I always hoped Apple did to the iPhone-AppleTV combo (and never did).

Very surprised to read that it's using an outdated chipset. At least going by TA, sounds like it is somewhere between the Sheild Portable and Sheild Tablet. The tablet far exceeded the Portable. And the Shield TV is far more powerful than the tablet.

I think that has to be wrong if it supports 4K.

It's not. It's using a custom chip probably based on Pascal (GTX 9XX) that has never been used before and should be quite more powerful than the previous generations used in those devices.

Then TA's article is completely off base.

I do know it's a Tegra chip from other major gaming sites (Gamespot, IGN). But those didn't even clarify much about it. I'm sure it would be at least as powerful as the Tegra X1 (which does handle 4K, etc.).

Edit: Yeah, even Nvidia's blog is very scant on details so it's anyone guess. While it never has been released natively on the Sheild TV (Console), it's interesting to note that Skyrim was used as a demo when it was first revealed.

And Shield TV does run games like Borderlands 2, War Thunder, The Talos Principle and many more natively so it is certainly no slouch. So if it's even just a little more powerful it definitely can run high end games.

As I'm sure it will but until it's fully released, we won't know for sure :)

I know self promotion isn't looked on too kindly here on NeoGAF so I thought I would pay it forward and give away some codes.

Instead of just listing them here for any yahoo to grab first I thought I would have a bit of fun. My game is about a king who is killed and must rebuild himself to full glory and take back his kingdom.

So in keeping with the theme... I will DM you a code if you post here with a king who is dead who you would like to see resurrected (the king can be fictional, a pun, or even a Queen (like Freddie Mercury)).

To the king in the north! (damn, I have a Lannister avatar)

The footage I've seen from Eggggg makes it look a great platformer, are the controls that fidly? I can usually get the hang of most control schemes but if this is that hard to get used to I might have to pass.

I wouldn't say they are fidly. They just take a bit of getting used to. Game is really great and I think the controls actually add to the uniqueness, which is basically platforming by puking.

Well worth the $2 from what I've played so far (although if you are choosing between it and Bug Butcher, go with BB).

Cool, picked up BB already but I'll pick up Eggg later when I'm in need of a good platformer.

Played some Eggggg and... is great! Is the new stylelf platformers (double jump, wall jump,...) but the dev added a few twists that makes it almost a fresh experience, like making pools of vomit to cross a gap and other cool things. And the controls, after adapting to them, feel very comfortable and easy to control. I never miss a jump or a turn. Rayman Ripoff Run (the third game) should learn from this. Eggggg is also a polished gem full of sense of humor, style and oomph. The map is gorgeous. Very recommended.

Random question - but what are the best jp store exclusive games that can be played by someone with a relatively poor command of Japanese?

Granblue Fantasy is probably the one most people would say.

Ones I've had little trouble with:

Professional Baseball Spirits Ace
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Shooters (this has a reddit and a tumblr tutorial in English)
Drift Spirits (this had an english version so there are guides available too)

Did anyone check out Rusty Lake Roots? You should. Also Rusty Lake Hotel, which is currently on sale, and the dev's Cube Escape games, which are all free and last about 30 minutes to an hour each. Played together and in release order, they tell a spawling unsettling Lynchian narrative of the titular hotel and its many guests throughout the year. Rusty Lake Roots is the biggest game in the series (about 4-6 hours).

It actually looks super sick for traveling and I travel a lot.
Welp, mobile had a good run. Close it up MB, we're all moving to switch now.

:p it does actually look like a pretty cool device

Decided to try Clash Royale again after hearing some high praise about it on a podcast I enjoy, and now I'm really into it.

What clan are most people here in?

Neogaf?

And yes, it's pretty amazing imho too.
Matchmaking is one of the best I've ever experienced.

Cant believe The Bug Butcher isnt featured on my country...

And tempted about Mini Metro

Yep noticed it too, criminal.
I'm in robotic bay now and the game continues to be amazing.

I confess that while in the first two worlds I went for high scores and combos....now I'm just trying to survive and complete the stages.Difficulty progression is perfect.

GLORIOUS.

There are like six different clans when you search for NeoGAF

Our tag is #QYYQCQ (you search including the hashtag). We are one of the most active GAF clans.

The clan is closed right now or else we get spammed by join requests all day. Just tell me if you want to join and I will open it up.

Cool, see it now. Definitely would like to join

Ours is #20Y9PQ. Feel free to request if the other doesn't work out. Would love to have you bro. It is a great game, and I usually hate F2p games. I'm the Leader of that one and it's pretty active and relaxed.

EDIT: in fact, this is open to any of you. You are all welcome to join, just mention Neogaf in your request.

LOL.
I'm in a NeoGAF clan too....but the tag is different from the two above.
I'm almost in legendary arena and I always wondered why I didn't recognize a single name.

Urge to re download Clash of Clans... rising...

Going to check out The Bug Butcher tonight. Y'all sold me on that one.

Loving Egggg now that I've become used to the controls. The game just oozes charm.

I guess you mean Clash Royale?
You should absolutely do it. It is my GOTY and probably my favorite game of the last several years. No game had me hooked like this since World of Warcraft Classic I guess.

There are many things that annoy me and Supercell is taking its time to fix issues but the gameplay behind it is just superb.

Fixed :)

Anyways, it is interesting seeing this new found interest for CR in this thread all of sudden. I used to play the game rigorously but at a certain point I had to take breaks from the game due to frustration with the gameplay and online experience. Eventually I had taken so many breaks from the game that I wondered why I was still playing so I ended up deleting it. If someone could replicate the gameplay of CR but put it into a premium model with decent support I would buy it incredibly fast.

I'm only just now playing Monument Valley for the first time. I've always been decent with spacial relations tests, but the brain power that went into making this game must have been off the charts. The first Room game is the only other game that comes to mind where I couldn't imagine designing the puzzles.

Bug Butcher is hands down the best shooter of the year.
Level 29 is beyond awesome, I just put like 4 hours straight on it alone.

Yep, meant Clash Royale :) I went ahead and took the plunge and am back in the saddle again! Just reached Arena 4 :D last time I played, I would fluctuate from 850-950 so much that I kind of gave up on ever reach arena 4. Since I started playing again, I've lost 1 match and absolutely destroyed the dozen or so matches I won. The balancing they've done has really helped make the whole game feel a lot more fair and like anyone can win with any deck.

Also loving the hell out of Bug Butcher, but man is the game is hard! I'm only on level 9, but the difficulty is ramping up quickly. Love it!

ENDLESS MODE, here I come.

Guys on my Gamecenter, step up your game, I need more competition!!! :p
