As a Wii U owner I feel betrayed by Nintendo. Am I the only one?

I am disappointed by the management of the last part of its life.
It had a lot of troubles and I think Nintendo supported it more than many others could have done in a similar situation.
But the way they delayed Zelda and planned bland/spinoffs for the Wii U iteration of Animal Crossing and Mario Sport/Tennis let me down.

The Wii U is only 4 years old but won't receive any more support by Nintendo (except for Zelda that should have been released many time ago).
In addition many Wii U games will have enhanced ports on the Switch. Enhancements that I'll probably never have on my Wii U games.
So I feel a bit like I've been a beta tester for the Nintendo Switch all along. Am I the only one?

P.S. sorry for the bad english

WiiU was the first Nintendo console I refused to purchase.

That said, I don't Think Nintendo did you any wrong here. You bought a failed console, they supported it as much as they could.

I got a few hundred hours out of it. Not the best return on investment, but it could've been much worse, and there are still a few games I plan to get around to at some point in the future.

My biggest issue with the Wii U was the sheer number of overpriced garbage mailed-it-in games released in the last couple of years. Games Nintendo probably released to give people something to play, but what ultimately felt like shallow cash grabs. Mario Party 10, Starfox Zero, Animal Crossing, and Mario Tennis, most notably. I would've preferred smaller, more polished, less expensive games like Captain Toad, or nothing at all. Wasting my money on those titles was a much bigger hit to my confidence in the company than if they had simply cut bait and bailed after 2-3 years.

You are not the only one. When you buy a sustem, you expect it to have games released for it for more than 2 years.
That's why I'm gonna wait for nintendo systems to have a decent library before buying them from now on.

And whose fault it is that it failed?

Betrayed? Every game, apart from Breath of the Wild, that Nintendo has promised for the system has been released. I got Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Kart 8, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. No complaints here.

Wii U had an incredible exclusive line up of games, a great 4 years as a side console. Bought it on day one and feel it's time is over.

Time to switch.

The Wii U has had games released on it, first party, for 4 years. Most recent was this month, 48th month of the console's life. Average of just under 1 Nintendo published game per month on the Wii U.

Nice try.

The Wii U is the gift that keeps on giving, if you ask me. I love it to death. And now that the homebrew scene seems to be about to explode, the Wii U will become the little machine that could. NES to Wii U, all in one box.

I'm more worried I'll have to buy the same games for the Switch or keep the two consoles plugged in to keep playing MK8, but that's more of a testament to the reasons why i'm fine with what the WiiU was than anything. Moving on to a better iteration of the off-TV concept is fine by me.

The Wii U has once more the best exclusives this gen. There's nothing to be upset about imo. Just enjoy your high quality Nintendo first party games.

I understand why you feel that way, but for me betrayal would be if the WiiU was selling PS4 numbers and they decided to abandon it to put another new machine out in months.

To be honest the support they gave to the WiiU, seeing the commercial disaster it is, was great, they have been carrying a dead system for 3 years.

The Wii U's existence, as limited as it may be now has been around longer without a successor than the original XBox while doing worse than it and MS dropped that thing the first chance they had. To be fair though MS never saw a penny of profit with the OG XBox.

So yes.

Yes and no. Well no mostly. Not really. I got a lot of usage out of my Wii U. The only regret I have is that there won't be any direct BC if any with the Wii U due to its nature. All my games are physical so even if they did somehow get a digital BC working I'd still have to purchase my games again.

I mean I'll get a Switch. I'll love the shit out of it. And I'll look forward to its future and all the first and second party games it'll surely get. But I'll always be sad some of them won't be playable.

I just hope Nintendo makes up for it by stocking the Virtual Console full of every game you can currently get and keeps it updated. THIS is the Nintendo console we've wanted since the '90s. Being able to play all your classics anywhere you want. Give it to me and hook it to my veins!

If the VC sucks again, I will definitely wait patiently for someone to hack it and allow emulators. But I'd really rather give you my money again, Nintendo. So don't let me down! Even if the VC only has first party games at launch it'd be enough for me.

Yeah, the Wii U will only be 5 years old but I dont mind. I got a lot of fun oiut of mine and it's a limited edition Zelda model so it'll still look nice on display. (Though WTF at only decorating the GamePad? Was it so hard to put a Zelda logo or a simple gold Triforce on the sides of the console??? Also, did anyone ever translate the Hylian around the edges of the case?)

Rockefellers. Skull and Bones. Microsoft. Al Qaeda. A Cabal of Bankers. The melting point of steel. What do these things have in common? Wake up sheeple, the landfill wasn't even REAL!
I think it would be a very nice thing if Nintendo release the new 3d Mario game and some other early Switch games also for Wii U.
Just to thanks the Wii U owners.

I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with both the Wii and the Wii U, so I won't be sorry to see them go. I'd love to get rid of my Wii U, but it had some fantastic games, so I guess it'll be sticking around unless Nintendo re-releases/Virtual Consoles everything for the Switch.

Gimme portable Bayonetta, Nintendo, pleeeeeeeeease.

Not really. I felt it a couple of years ago when the only big games I bought for the system all year were Bayonetta 2 and Mario Kart 8, but in recent times I've been catching up on the first party games I missed (Captain Toad, Lego City, Tropical Freeze) and it's made me more appreciative of Nintendo's output on the platform.

Color Splash is a game I adore, and almost the perfect swansong for the platform.

Given the Wii U's market performance and the current market situation, I'm more in awe of how Nintendo even bothered supporting the format with a variety of big budget releases over a four year period. I guess it helps that out of all the games I played on the system, including third party ones like Toki Tori 2 and Little Inferno, I was only really disappointed with one game.

Wii U easily has the best first-party games of this generation. So, no. I feel very blessed to have a nearly complete Wii U collection.

I am, however, disappointed in these half-cycle iterations with barely any upgrades to the games.

Do you feel ripped off by Sony and Microsoft releasing new consoles after two years?

The console has great games. And they supported it the way they could, until the very end.

You should consider that the system does not sell well; what the hell, it sells nothing right now. Nintendo cannot stay releasing more games for Wii U on the next 3 years. Those who didn't buy a Wii U by now won't buy it the next year.

Nintendo needs to move on. And nothing better than releasing a new console, that has been well received overall with just a 3-minute trailer. It's fair if they release ports of the most successful games in Switch, this way they can get more users, that were interested in those games, but were not in the Wii U, because of the gamepad, price and many other reasons.

And you can still play those games in your Wii U. There is no reason to feel betrayed.

N64 owners felt the same thing when the Dolphin was announced.
Gamecube owners felt the same thing when the Revolution was announced.
Wii owners... well, I don't think they minded when Project Cafe was announced. People really wanted a "Wii HD" back then..

N64 had 350+ games available after it's 5 year lifespan ended. And that was a cartridge system. Which also had a terrible third party support from the east.

Gamecube had 650+ games.

The Wii had, well, literally thousands although i'm not sure how many of those were shovelware minigame compilations, indie titles and how many were VC roms.

The WiiU has what? If you exclude the VC roms and the download only indie games what's left? I'd say less than 100 games.

Well, Nintendo's, but they didn't betray anyone, they made a shitty console with shitty support. Those of us who saw that, at launch, voted with our wallets and didn't buy the console, so that console died as a result.

Hopefully the switch fairs better. I'm certain we all need to see more before we make a purchasing decision. But it looks better than the WiiU at this point.

You've said it yourself, the platform is 4 years old, historically speaking, that's not too shabby in terms of a (console) product life cycle.

Also, the Wii U is so different from the Switch, how exactly have us Wii U owners been "beta testing"?

I feel bad that I didn't use the system to it's full potential, missed out on many games, some big names too like MK8, that's more on me.

WiiU was worth it for Bayonetta 2 alone.

Considering I have more than 100 games on disc, this statement is false.

Well, Xbox was cut short by Microsoft not because it was a commercial failure (although a financial one) but only because Microsoft wanted to be first out of the gates for the next generation. That's more of a betrayal than Nintendo cutting down support for a commercially failed platform like the Wii U.

Business is business. I'm glad I never bought the Wii U, though.

Wii U is a greatly under appreciated system with a ton of really unique great games, I have a substantial backlog to catch up on, I feel sad for the the system but not from Nintendo support of it, they have arguably released some of their best games on it, IMO it's really the Dreamcast of its gen

I've got Fatal Frame 5 and Bayonetta 1+2, I think I'm good.

I feel I got ripped off on an OLED vita for 60 bucks however.

As a day-one buyer, I feel disappointed. It did not deliver much more than what was announced before launch. We pretty much knew all the games to come before the console was released.

I bought the console hoping to see some other games, like Metroid or a Fire Emblem game. Nothing happened. Nintendo simply delivered what was announced, and the second wave of games did not consist of ambitious games, but short developments to feed the players. That's disappointing. Even if Splatoon is fun, I can't be satisfied by small/rushed games like Mario Maker or Starfox.

Just to thanks the Wii U owners.

Why would they take development time to make versions that (probably) wouldn't really sell? Plus we have no idea on any specs for the Nintendo Switch. WiiU might not be able to run what they make for Switch. Plus they would have to figure out what to do with the 2nd screen of the gamepad that you wouldn't have on the Switch.

Had the U not released I would have barely had console gaming that I enjoyed this gen, so while it wasn't all it should have been, I'm glad it released along with the 3ds.

This is like saying you feel betrayed because games, that were on Xbox360/PS3 get rereleased as HD Remasters on Xbox One/PS4 with better graphics.

The Switch is a new console. And that is all.
Also it only makes sense that Nintendo wants to bring their biggest titles to their new console and an enhanced port is probably the best and quickest way to earn some additional cash.

The Wii U is the only current gen console with exclusives that made me want to buy one.

I'm actually more disappointed with Sony and MS. Haven't been impressed with the look of the single player campaigns in the last 2 Halo games, and it's taken until now for Sony to release a game like Uncharted 4.

Pretty much everything else I might care about is also on PC.

I think if rumours are correct for being a Wii u owner your going to be very happy.

You will be rewarded for your loyalty to nintendo. This is where my nintendo will really make all the difference in MOVING to SWITCH!

This. I love the Wii U, love the tablet controller which allows me to play most of the games without switching the TV on and the games for the most part are brilliant, epecially Nintendo's own output.

It remains the most played console in my house ;)

Bring on the next system, I cannot wait.

I actually feel vindicated knowing that the next console will get ports of my favorite games (and many people seem to be happy with it). Still, I don't think any port will ever capture the excitement of playing MK8, Smash U, Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox Zero, #FE and many others for the first time (and with 2 screens).

Splatoon wouldn't feel "fresh" at all.

In fact I feel it´s the very opposite for me: I bought a WiiU just for MK8, Bayonetta 2 and Zelda, but have been pleasantly surprised by other awesome games I wasn´t expecting, specially Super Mario Maker and Splatoon which have become some of my favorite games ever (also, I wasn´t expecting MK8 to be as good as it is!). So in fact, Nintendo has managed to win me over to get a Switch when they release it.
BTW, my enjoyment playing Splatoon hasn´t diminshed a single bit since the Switch reveal.

I may be wrong but isn't the Wii U -> Switch timeframe the same as every other Nintendo "home" console? reveal after 4 years, release after 5

edit: nah wii to wii u was 5 and 6.
