Football (Soccer) has so much potential in North America

I've always loved football, but just this year I've started following the MLS. I feel like even though it will always be relegated as a secondary (or third) sport around here, it still has a great amount of potential for grow.

I'm a Seattle Sounders fan and look at this shit:

seattle-sounders-soccer-16-1920x1080-370619.jpg

That's fucking gorgeous. That's something that clubs from more prestigious leagues in Europe or Latin America would be mad jealous of. The atmosphere in this stadium (Century Link Field) is amazing. From the crowds, the tifos, the before-the-game shows, it's all world-class. Looking at that you'd think that people not caring about soccer in America is a myth. Hell, I remember going to a Sounders game when they were at the bottom of the table and had not won a game in like 6 games, and it still managed to pull a crowd of over 40000 people.

But that's the thing. This team is an outlier. You will only see a stadium in North America packed like that for a Sounders game. From the games I've watched, Vancouver and Portland seem to attract big crowds too, although nothing comparable. And that sucks.

The other week I watched a game with the leader of the western conference, and that shit was kinda depressing. They might have had maybe 12000 people there, and the pitch was marked with ugly American football marks. One would expect way more attendance for a game like that.

Anyway, I feel like the sport in general has an amazing amount of potential, and has grown tremendously recently. There's great football to enjoy here, with amazing players that come from other leagues and some that will probably leave to join top teams around the world.

How do people feel about the MLS in general?

I agree. I love MLS soccer and wish more people would follow the teams and get behind the league. Sadly more people would prefer to stay home and watch European leagues than come out and cheer for their local team.

(Now come to Portland and watch a Timbers match. You'll hear a louder, more engaged crowd than anything you'll experience at a Sounders home match) ;)

I try to watch the soccer grand thing that happens each four (or is it eight?) years and the excessive flopping done by the other teams turns me off to the sport, especially when fans of the sport choose to deflect the issue by making a barely related comment.

Another thing about the sport is, it's just not very interesting to watch. The pay off is very little, in comparison to football and basketball.

MLS has a lot of potential to grow, they have a good idea when they contract some of the stars from other league, the issue is that they come to the MLS to retire getting paid a lot due their name, if the MLS starts getting really important players but in their prime time, they could easily be one of the greatests leagues around.

Just imagine each goal is worth 7 points.

Only problem: It's so goddamn boring.
Yeah, not enough adverts every 2 minutes.

And here are the barely related defensive comments lol. Whatever.
Maybe if you have such a bias against Football you shouldn't come into threads about it?

Anyway, MLS will never be interesting to me as a European until it has proper leagues with relegation and promotion.

How do people feel about the MLS in general?

I'm a Vancouver Whitecaps season ticket holder and I'm genuinely quite bored by the league.

There are some good players and the league is competitive but the actual quality of games is pretty awful. What I mean by this is that play is often dictated by mistakes defenders make as opposed to good buildup play, or a specific bit of skill by a great player. Without any disservice being done to him, there's a reason why players like Bradley Wright-Philips and Robbie Keane (who was and is a great player) look like world beaters when they'd barely get a look in at the top two divisions in England (remember Keane playing for Villa a few years ago...)

As a season ticket holder I've seen most teams in this division quite a few times now and bar a few feisty affairs on the west coast, the games lack a lot of passion and energy that I'm used to from European and South American football.

It will get better. It needs another decade or so. There are some fucked up rules that don't help the league get to where it needs to get to though. There are three Canadian teams in the MLS yet Canadian players count as International spots of the rosters of US teams (yet US does not count as international in Canada).

Soccer would be great if it wasn't so so so dreadfully boring to watch. It rivals only American football in that regard. The best thing about it is the clock doesn't stop. NFL should take note.

I think as the minority population in the country grows so will the appeal of Soccer. When your parents generation only followed soccer that rubs off and advertisers/corporation will have to take notice.

Only problem: It's so goddamn boring.

There are improvements that could be made to make it more interesting, biggest one is not letting you pass back to the keeper.

If you're already a fan of soccer, then MLS will certainly appeal to you. That said, soccer will never overtake football, baseball or basketball in North America (or hockey for northern US and Canada).

in 50 years, basketball will be a more important global sport than soccer.

Even advertising-obsessed europeans will like it.

Doesn't break up the flow of play though, does it?

As though 90 minutes of no-scoring needs breaking up.

Yeah, not enough adverts every 2 minutes.Maybe if you have such a bias against Football you shouldn't come into threads about it? .

I'll never understand why soccer fans are so sensitive lol. Also, to answer your question, what does the last sentence in the OP say? Yeah, that's why I replied. Grow some thick skin.

Literally the entire thing is full of ads. The players even wear fucking advertisements on their clothes.

I'll take that over the 20 commercial breaks per game that the NFL requires.

That is a good one.

I love the tifo wars between the teams:

This is one of my favorites. :)

Another great video of the best tifo between the two clubs.

I have very little interest in MLS but I hope it continues to grow. I work at a company that has a lot of international employees and soccer fans, the world cup is practically a holiday for most, and while we're ~30mins from an MLS team, I don't know anybody who works here who goes to the games. I'm sure people do, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in anybody talking about games the next day at work.

That will probably not happen in our lifetimes. European football has the most money and greatest competition. Champions League is prestigious for that and you can only get that in Europe. If there is a continental competition that can rival that in the Americas sign me up, but Libertadores quality is laughable compared to Euro quality.

Also decision day 2016 was a blast. I think its a great idea to have all the teams play at the same time on the final week. Although Sunday was a poor choice with the competition with the NFL.

The reason why the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB are so popular in North America, is because they have the best players in the world. The MLS doesn't even come close to having the best. Until they do, they'll never compare.

MLS has so much potential to grow.

To really enjoy watching it on TV, you need to watch games at stadiums first, that's a prerequisite. Ambiance is *everything*.

Soccer is a part of many nations' identities in Europe. When Germany won the world cup it was basically a national holiday here. So if you shit on the sport, many feel like you shit on their way of living, too. It's very similiar with Football/Baseball for many Americans.

The truth is this: If you would were raised in Germany it's much more likely you would love watching/playing soccer. If you were raised in the US it's the same with football. Neither sport is inherently better or worse, they are simply very, very different. I find the endless pauses and lack of actual field play during Football almost unbearable but I'm also not a big soccer buff these days. I love Formula 1 though, which EVERYONE hates, no matter the nation, so there's that ;)

I think Soccer is much more nuanced in how entertaining it is, so if you have little exposure to it you will find it boring. It might be worth watching it with someone who has a better eye for the game and have them point out some of the finer points of Soccer.

Also, I find making comparisons between Soccer and American Football to be pointless and without any real merit especially when trying to argue which sport is better.

lol

The US hasn't won a major world tournament in, what, a decade+? Not even on the little league level?

Has there been any talks about adding MLS teams to the Copa Libertadores de America? Because that would also be a great test and showcase of the growth of the sport around here. Right not there's only a Concacaf cup that doesn't seem as competitive.

Funny that this thread (at least when I clicked on it) is right by the "American Football alters kids brains" thread.

Yeah, I think the dangers of American Football will move more kids over to soccer during the next decade. I'm becoming more of a fan as the years go by. Didn't really start watching soccer games until about 4-5 years ago.
