Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel |OT|

My thoughts exactly. DS3 is one of my favorite games ever, but I'm too cheap frugal to justify spending $15 on only a couple hours of content. :(

eh, a 1.5 hour long movie is about that much and it's a one-and-done experience.

then again i grew up w 80s/90s videogame prices, as long as it's good, i'll buy it. i bought TMNTIV for SNES new and you can beat that game in 45 mins. and i had already rented and beaten it!

I don't think the DLC for Dark Souls games ever had trophies? only Bloodborne

main boss was really cool and obviously Bloodborne inspired, other boss was disappointing, not particularly creative and didn't feel like much of a boss, all in all the DLC was pretty good but I'm really hoping the second will deliver something on par with DS1's and BB's

Ah i thought they did it for all of them. My bad. Still kind of wish they added trophies.

Well, that was one of the most disappointing pieces of DLC I've played in a long time. Thought most of the new enemies felt gimmicky, the final boss sucked. The other boss was ok but only because of the arena itself.

Would feel ripped off if it wasn't for the PvP mode, being able to play that with friends is good enough for me.

Does anyone else think the
giant wolves
take wierd damage. I hit them a few times and most of their health bar is still intact, them I him them one more time and they die. I killed two of them still thinking they had most of their life.

Also, why is this game
making me kill wolves :(

They're just chilling and not bothering anyone but I need to go through them and they think I'm hostile.

They end attacking you if you stand there enough time. So fuck them.

Also you'll see that is not really "weird", it will make sense.

You'll probably fight the two bosses back to back and then I wonder if your opinion changes at all. Like for instance, I was kinda expecting:

Reasonably Large Area ->Boss -> good size optional area -> Optional boss

Instead I got.

Reasonably Large Area ->Boss -> Optional Boss right after.

It ends abruptly and I think makes it feel small at the end.
That's fair.

Finished it. I didn't check the time but it took me maybe 3-ish hours.

I liked the look of the area and its openness. Final boss was awesome, felt pretty good when I finally beat it. Music was awesome. Optional boss was meh but the location was cool.

However, in the end it does feel short and kinda unsatisfying. I have zero interest in PVP, so that's basically non-existant for me.

Not a bad DLC but not great either.

there's literally zero gimmicks in the enemies. Like, zero. They walk in packs, i guess?

nice gimmick.

I felt the same way. Didn't want to kill them.

Yeah this boss is just something else. They actually put every worst mechanic they could into it and called it a day.

WOW, i did not expect the DLC to be this trash, like really really trash, who made this shit ?
i hated Dark souls 3 because of how unorignal it was and how terrible the bosses were, i thought they could fix the mess that is the game by releasing a DLC as good as Artorias or old Hunters, i was wrong, i wish if i could refund my season pass purchase, Dark souls 3 and this Shitty DLC is a proof that Fromsoftware need to move on to another franchise because they have absolutely zero idea for souls games now, bring back Tenchu please

When people say its "short" how short are we talking? Dont think DS3 was a bad game but found it to have the least longevity for me out of any of the games so hearing the DLC is short is offputting

Really?
Sister Friede and Ariandel's fight
was amazing and full of surprises, why didn't you like it?

I seem to be looking at it a lot like myco666 is looking at it.

You have a multi-phase fight, but with multiple health bars instead of one bigger one. I dislike that already, one of the reasons I liked the Maria fight in Bloodborne is because you saw one health bar and needed to get it to zero. I have to kill the same character three separate times, and she fights similar in all three phases. I dislike how boring the second stage is because in general I hate multi-character boss fights unless they bring something new. On top of that, it feels like there is no reward for beating her. You get the soul sure, but there's no cutscene, no weapon drop, no secret area, nadda.

I think I beat it in about three hours? Maybe three and a half.

The DLC wasn't terrible, i had fun, but yeah they're kind of out of ideas for Souls now. They don't know how else to challenge in new ways so they just went with something as incredibly simple, and to me cheap, as
THREE phases, omg
.

I was already not a fan of when the base game made me
fight the damn Nameless dragon phase every time despite it just being a time-wasting chore after a few attempts.

I also played my first time in NG+2 with only a slow greatsword as my viable weapon, and DS3 still loves its Bloodborne-paced enemies, haha.

Pretty good so far, I like that there's a lot to explore in the areas I've been to. Not a lot of surprises or challenge yet (I'm level 80ish), expect for those
Voldo-looking creatures
. Fighting them is a lot of fun and feels fresh.

Does either the
giant wolf
in the beginning area or
the knight Wilhelm
in the next area count as one of the 2 bosses?

Personally, I'm okay with multi-phase fight as long as the boss doesn't have a gazillion of HP. I thought it was okay here, just that the 3rd phase was too difficult for me on solo, but clearly not impossible.
I don't like multi-character boss fights either, but when it's done well like the Deacons or the Abyss Watchers, no problem with it. But yeah, Friede and Ariandel feels a bit messy though, I think.
I agree about the feeling of "no reward". But I suspect there is something to do with the Painter, but nobody knows yet at the moment. But if in the end, there is nothing, well, I'll be pretty disappointed.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's it, and she just serves to explain who painted the painting in Dark Souls 1. But she does talk about Gael looking for her "final pigment" and she makes it sound like that pigment is the "dark soul of man". So maybe continued in DLC2.

Trees that may or may not activate, wolf pack stuff, archers with knockback
are the three main ones.

stuff like that exists in all dark souls game's and are pretty standard. I would definitely not define them as gimmick (especially because they are pretty easy to counter)

archers with knockback go all the way back to DS1.

I thought Abyss Watchers were fantastic, that's my example of a multi-phase/character fight done right.

Neither of those counts. The boss fights are the full "hp on the middle of the screen" fights.

I didn't say they were new gimmicks, I just didn't think they were executed well. Anor Londo was new in DS1, the archer gauntlet was new and novel.
Seeing a knockoff in this DLC just felt lame.

Movie prices are horrible value indicators though.

And most DLC nowadays is shit in comparison to stuff like The Witcher 3.

All I'm getting from this DLC is that most of From has moved onto other projects because they've already made plenty of money off this and its season pass. That's scummy as fuck.

I feel like I'm a bit overleveled for this at 80, especially with all that estus.
The scaling in the DLC is definitely bad.

hmm i see, i can understand, but gimmicks for me are generally stuff that is badly implemented (which in my opinion it wasn't here) or just there for the ~shock factor, that's why i quoted you :p

Just started this and I'm liking it so far. I made it to the top of the tower near the beginning and when I was back, I noticed there was an unreachable item near the entrance, so I went upstairs a bit and jumped down... I slid down the snow for a while until I died :/

By the way, are the mobs complaints just about the beginning or is it a problem in general? Because there's one at the very beginning that I unknowingly killed one enemy at the time and it wasn't until further runs that I noticed they were a mob lol. I hope it's not a recurrent thing because that was my least favorite thing in 2 Scholar.

Thanks, good to know there’s still a good amount of game ahead of me. Gonna save the rest of the DLC for the next couple of nights; Without looking at the spoilers, the last boss sounds like a real challenge :)

Yeah, as Gbraga pointed out about Miyazaki in an interview:

"There are a couple of different aspects in Dark Souls 3 DLC that we are trying to achieve, but one of them is a continuation of story between the 2 DLCs. This is something new that we are taking on."

Buuut still, this is so frustrating D:

This DLC is great what are these fools talking about. I bet a lot of reviewers got to the chapel and were like ???? Welp guess that's it

Really liked Vaati's lore video on the DLC but it only further conforms to me that it should've been one DLC rather than two. Lots of really interesting implications and like Dark Souls III itself I like that it adds context and really fleshes out the overall story. Incredibly excited for the next DLC.

I really wish the DLCs would have tied to main game areas somehow. Getting transported to another world seems like a cheap way to take when there are pathways and doors that could've been added. Like that damn right door in Anor Londo.

The area itself is quite well done, nice and sprawling that allows good exploration in many directions. There is a noticeable reuse of human enemy and dog animations though.

I hate how nearly all items you find lying around are totally shit and even enemies drop normal or large titanite shards as if you don't have a gazillion of those already. Plus they have managed to make a few infuriating
branch jumping exercises with almost as infuriating archers as in DS1's Anor Londo
.

Haven't found the optional boss yet but managed to get to the proper one. Is it possible to dodge the stupid
invisibility attack
? I managed to only counter it by
finding where she is and attacking as soon as she starts charging the attack
.

That final boss is saved by the presentation because holy fuck does it get tedious. The first boss was really disappointing on all fronts. The first area with the wolves and trees is hot garbage, but it gets much better as you go on. The length of the DLC is okay, but it definitely leaves something to be desired. I'd say the review scores are on the money.

I enjoyed my time with it well enough, but it's not their best piece of DLC, that's for sure.

It's not a "real" place though. It's pretty much an alternate dimension.

I thought the 2nd part was not as great. FROM just threw mobs upon mobs with bleeding mechanics to activate the final boss. There wasn't anything methodical about it. Either carry a torch or haul ass.

First phase of the final boss is so dumb and RNG.
She either stands there diddling herself eating a full stamina bar of attacks, or spams teleport.
