Well, this isn't a surface pro. It literally costs three times as much. It definitely has a market, but it's a niche one and not comparable to a $1k tablet hybrid.

The Studio won't be sold at a loss and they won't overproduce it. So you can add it to profitable Microsoft products list.

This is one of those products that makes me wish I was in a different profession just for an excuse to buy one of these things. When I saw the actress put that puck on the screen, I was sold.

Price point is laughable. This product is irrelevant/redundant.

Microsoft's booming Surface business disagrees with you.

Microsoft's Surface concept has gone from being a joke to becoming a significant part of its business. Sales of Surfaces devices jumped 38 percent during the last quarter (Q1 2017) reaching $926 million, compared to a year ago when they were just $672 million, according to Microsoft's latest earnings report. The company points to increased sales of the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book for the drive. CEO Satya Nadella also noted that enterprise orders of 500 or more Surface devices have increased by 70 percent.

All signs point to this thing likely becoming a big seller, especially within the business/tech/art community (where the Surface line is thriving).

I'm surprised so many people are praising the design, I'm not feeling the bar and the two arms. Looks more utilitarian than beautiful to me.

The Dial is really, really cool though.

Looks nice. Too bad that nowadays these portable computers only seem to be targeted at crazy rich folk.

Uhm, pretty sure this thing is not supposed to be lugged around in your backpack.

And as others have pointed out, this thing seems like a dream come true for digital artists. There's your target audience.

Wow that is a beautiful product. I'd expect this from Apple, not Microsoft. I wish I had the spare cash to afford this thing.

Very cool, and this is from someone who was 'meh' on the surface pro, and actively dislikes the surface book .I don't know any creative pro's on windows, but that could change after seeing this.

Price point is fine, in fact, considering they are talking about limited quantities, I would bet they are losing money on every single device initially, and probably for a while!

How is the state of touch apps on Windows these days? I remember seeing 'Staffpad' and being impressed, but I haven't heard about much since. Last time I had a dip in it wasn't good. Stuff like photoshop had a couple of kludged in touch controls, I also saw Evernote dropped support for their windows touch app and just have the desktop version now.

That said, from what I saw in the video, looks like MS is pumping some money into a few cool creative apps to showcase their product.

It's really not, at least not for artists who will use it as an art tablet.

Look at wacom prices

Ah - I see, I was more looking at it as a desktop replacement I guess. Also, I'm in Canada, the CAD struggle is real.

I get paid in USD though

Are people too stupid to realize that this is a machine made for artists who draw/paint and content creators(which is not a niche market, it is Wacom's entire market).

It is priced high but not outrageously high considering the form factor and what you get. Cintiq monitors are just as expensive yet weight like a truck compared to this and nowhere near as appealing.

If you are looking for a computer to write your term paper with and play some league of legends yea this is not the machine for you.

If you are concept artist in gaming, you are on a PC 99% of the time.

Lots of designers using PCs these days. split is probably 50/50.

It looks stunning. Same team who made the Xbox One S?
Because they are on a roll with looks. And that makes me excited for Scorpio.

This.

This is what a 27 inch wacom cintiq looks like:

It's insanely bulky, has a pretty mediocre screen, and costs 2800 USD, and it's only a monitor!

Oh now I remember the last time I saw a similar workstation product.

http://www8.hp.com/us/en/workstations/z1-g3.html#belarus&pd1=1

HP Z1. All the internals are housed on the monitor, it was pretty impressive for sure, but most of the housing was made of plastics and it definitely gave a bulky feeling while trying to swivel it around.

One of the top comments on Arstechnica thought they might be selling the base configuration at very thin margins.

Yup same Surface team who also designed Xbox One S. And I agree, Scorpio is in great hands :) fuck next year is going to be awesome. Book 2, Pro 5, Scorpio and may be Surface Phone.

Next year is going to be expensive for me. I'm buying the surface book 2, a new gaming pc with 1080ti and possibly the next xbox/ scorpio.

GTX 1060, 1070, and 1080 are available on laptops and are the current gen laptop GPUs.
I think they went with the GPU have doesn't require a form factor change for the cooling. The design of this desktop outweighs any desire Microsoft has to up the performance within it.

I'd assume that we will see a response from wacom that is 4K, as well as a Pascal model before March.

Wish they had a device that worked like a cintiq, that I could just simply connect to my computer. I don't need another computer when I already have one.

The 1000 series GPUs are better thermally though, they could potentially make the unit shorter if they wanted.

That is literally the definition of a niche market.

1060 laptop version is faster than a 980m and uses less power than a 970m.

why are people complaining about specs?

this isn't meant to play games but for photoshop. specs are likely more than good enough.

Because newer parts exist. You could get much more performance for the same power draw, or much less power draw for the same performance.

Echoing other thoughts: when the dial was put on the screen and the radial contextual menu showed up, I said, "Oh SHIT!" out loud.

You make it sounds like they dont already know this lol

They know exactly who their target audience is. And they are only making them in limited quantities.

I had a Cintiq but I sold it because I couldn't rotate it. This bothers some people but others are fine with it. If the Surface Studio does not rotate then I would suggest spending time with one before spending the money.

No, I do know this and have said so. And it's not an argument against the existence of the product. It's just not meant for the mass market, like an iMac is. I feel like the expectations preceding its announcement were what influenced these comparisons.

In that case I agree, because this is not competing with iMac, they dont even offer cheaper/smaller version.

Well didn't see that coming, will never be able to afford one ever but more competition is nice if they're getting into this market. The price doesn't seem that bad when compared to the bullshit cintiq prices (which MS totally should make a direct competitor of). Kind of afraid of first/early gen problems it might get like surface tablet driver/firmware/BSOD issues.
