September was alright and certainly a lot better than August, but with less of a positive number than I was expecting. Or hoping.

Main OP

Three games bought in September, but more beaten that bought during the month, even if that list started dwlindling towards the end.

I have two games planned for purchase in October. Well, one of them has just become a provisional buy but the view is wait and see for now. With Mafia III reviews not dropping until post-launch, I'm waiting to see what the verdict is on impressions at least before I get into it. So whilst it's still on my list for now, it's the only game on there right now that could end up gone from it soon.

World of Final Fantasy is the only other planned purchase for next month and the only one confirmed so far now. I would have waited until Christmas for that one, but with Titanfall 2 no longer being a day one purchase and The Last Guardian's push to December, I feel fine going for this now day one.

Havent really kept track of my backlog this year. But i just blew a really good month.

Then i splurged on some sales
Trackmania Turbo, MGSV, Republique, Child of Light and the Prince of Persia trillogy. So im currently -7 for the month (not counting the Tombraider 2013 HD remaster since ive already finished it)

Despite finishing 8 games. Ugh.

Finally played some "real" games this month! I was able to do that because I got really sick and couldn't go out but well... something positive came from it at least! With four finished games I actually managed to bring the quarter score up to +-0 even tho I didn't finish anything in two months. Yay.
Would have been at least one more if I either kept playing Tomb Raider or wasn't as obsessive about doing everything in Dishonored so perfectly. But I finished the High Chaos Dishonored run yesterday so I only have DLC and Low Chaos left to play (non-lethal, stealthy, without powers - amazing way to play, did that on 360 at release). Will be much quicker. I also made great progress in Shelter 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic 2.

Now I can't decide if I wanna start October badly by buying the Humble Artifex Mundi Bundle. It would be -6 but it's easy games that I play through fast so it would probably end up a +-0 pretty quick. Otherwide my October plans include more Tomb Raider, Mafia 1 and 2 (I hope 3 turns out to be good!) and maybe more Hitman. I also wanna get to Yakuza soonish. But I might just as well end up playing nothing and just play with/train my new dog now that I feel better.

Adding Forza Horizon 3 to the satisfied list. Not sure how many hours I've spent already, probably around 35 hours and I'm far from done with it. Amazing driving/racing game.

Also adding Abzu which I bought on sale yesterday and played through. I didn't like it quite as much as Journey, but it has some really neat stuff in it.

Oh shit, before I forget I need to add Diablo 3 to the bought list too. My wait for Forza Horizon 3, and my frustration with Path of Exile meant I just went ahead and spent the $40 for the complete edition of Diablo 3. I'm an idiot because it was the Sunday night before Forza came out Friday, but I was having fun with it in that time. I'll get back to it to finish the story, then start a new character when the new season starts. I did play it for about 6-10 hours so I've gotten a decent amount out so far, but not enough to justify my stupid impulse.

edit 2: So it happened again the next week, and I drunkenly purchased Football Tactics. It's real neat and I like some of the details they're adding. Regularly updated as well which is nice as it's early access and I swore off of those a while ago. The core is there and it's perfectly playable and rewarding so I don't feel too bad about it.

Also in this update I'm adding H1Z1: King of the Kill to the satisfied list. I haven't touched it really since H1Z1 was split off into two games, but I'm really into it now, and have around 25+ hours playing it.

Another good month for me. Both Phoenix Wright games done, which took me most of the month, reminding me of just how long those games can be. Plus a bunch of shorter games, including Home, which has been in my backlog for a year or two. Oh and Rugby Challenge 3, which suuuucked. I swear they haven't made any improvements to the janky gameplay (or rules they got completely wrong) since the first game, which came out in 2011.

On the plus side, the last week has been great. Dragon Quest: Builders is an awesome game.

WELP.

I'm throwing in the towel, gang, and it's the fault of the Xbox One's backwards compatibility. I skipped the 360 for most of last gen, making the growing BC list hard to resist. In the last 48 hours I purchased four 360 games -- Witcher 2, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon -- pushing (or rather sinking) my count to -12.

I have two games planned for purchase in October. Well, one of them has just become a provisional buy but the view is wait and see for now. With Mafia III reviews not dropping until post-launch, I'm waiting to see what the verdict is on impressions at least before I get into it. So whilst it's still on my list for now, it's the only game on there right now that could end up gone from it soon.

World of Final Fantasy is the only other planned purchase for next month and the only one confirmed so far now. I would have waited until Christmas for that one, but with Titanfall 2 no longer being a day one purchase and The Last Guardian's push to December, I feel fine going for this now day one,

So October was preeeeeeeeeeeeetty shit for the backlog. Not so much clearing games, but more adding to it. Not a single game beaten, yet an entire shitheap of games added to it. And not even most of the stuff I cited from my last post too. I skipped Mafia III and I'm sure World of Final Fantasy will be a Black Friday purchase. But while it wasn't a day one purchase, Titanfall 2 - after all the talk of it being amazing after the beta put me off - was more of a day three purchase.

Oh and not to mention a little purchase called PlayStation VR. Albeit, no games yet. But give it time yet.

Anyways, this month isn't looking much better with Dishonored II and Watch Dogs 2 all planned for day one purchases in the next two weeks. Thankfully only one for December with Last Guardian, but I really need to make a massive dent in the backlog again and get back into positive numbers again as I'm in the minus for the first time since near the start of the year.

Yeah. Not a good month.

I've batted within my annual average of twenty-something titles and it probably isn't unreal to speculate that I won't defeat my present backlog plate in the final two months. Dragon Quest Builders (PS4): Really loved this one. It's in my beat games too, you'll note.
Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4): Been trying to get into it, but I'm just not as excited by it as I was for Uncharted. Maybe it's that Lara's journey is lonely and gritty. And she talks to herself kinda awkwardly. I guess that's the difference between TR's "SURVIVE" theme and Uncharted's "ADVENTURE" theme.
World of Final Fantasy (PS4): The thing that the talks with all the extra the the's is the literally ruining the game

Assassin's Creed Chronicles China (PS4): Technically I shouldn't consider this beaten because there's three stories in this little collection, but I hate the game so much I'm going to sell it, and I wanted a record of the one I did get through.
Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 (PS3): I picked this back up on a whim and I was like, hey this was a fun game. Then I got to Galactus and remembered why I put it down. So I'm good. I beat it with my favorites.
Dragon Quest Builders (PS4): Again. Great little game that I was utterly addicted to, a more guided Minecraft that hits all the right notes in the DQ universe.
Republique (PS4): I actually backed this on PC at a pretty basic level, but spent $10 to get it on PS4 where I'd actually play it. Kinda sorry I did? It had so much potential to start, this weird cross between Bioshock and Metal Gear, and by the end... an utter fizzle. Nobody knew what the hell they wanted this game to do, clearly.

I have a rather large backlog which doesn't tend to get to me, but has recently been itching at the back of my mind.
Large, open-world games in particular have started to pile up, and I'd like to "knock some points off" before buying something like Watch_Dogs 2.

My primary platforms are PS4, Vita and 3DS.
I include PS+ titles and freebies, but they are low priority, and if I don't enjoy them I'll probably mark them as "Shelved".
I don't like Darkadia's "Pile of Shame" as that creates a real negative air around it, but I keep these in because I do intend to at least give them a try some day.

Ones I'm really meaning to target right now are MGSV, Mad Max, and Dying Light.
I enjoy each of these in their own way, but get easily sidetracked by multiplayer (or "comfort") gaming such as SFV, Overwatch, and recently Titanfall 2.

How do you go about tackling such games?
I don't have as much time to play as I used to, but last night I spent one hour making progress with the Dark Souls 3 DLC (Ashes of Ariandel isn't listed separately on Darkadia, so I've un-checked "Completed" for DS3) and one hour on Titanfall 2.

I don't think I'd call my method "discipline," but I also tend to get side-tracked. My whole existence and activities are highly mood-dependent, so I cannot rely on myself to play the same game until it's done. I tend to have a few "big" games (like open world action games, RPGs, or long shooters) mixed with a few shorter or more simple games, particularly indies. The most important thing for my success is not to double up on dominant styles. So if I've got one open world action game started, I won't start another until that one is finished, but I can start something like a new shooter if I finished the last one. That keeps me happy with the variety I'm getting, but still lets me progress through the longer titles I start at a somewhat steady pace. "Big" games can take me months to finish sometimes, but I keep a sense of progress with the little ones scattered in.

For example, my current list of "active" backlog titles looks like this:

I think the most important thing is to... well, have fun. Sometimes I wanna play games, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I want to knock out a bunch of shorter/in progress games I have, and every once in a while I'll actually work on one of the long RPGs in my list

The only thing I can really say is that... if you don't like the game, then don't play it. Take it off your backlog. For whatever reason my browser doesn't wanna open your Darkadia, so I don't know if you're actually doing that, but I find in general people with big backlogs (myself included before) tend to forget that games are for fun

Also, random tip, I use HowLongToBeat to look up average game times, so when I wanna take a bigger chunk of my backlog quickly, I figure out which games are under 8 hours and knock some out

I don't think I'd call my method "discipline," but I also tend to get side-tracked. My whole existence and activities are highly mood-dependent, so I cannot rely on myself to play the same game until it's done. I tend to have a few "big" games (like open world action games, RPGs, or long shooters) mixed with a few shorter or more simple games, particularly indies. The most important thing for my success is not to double up on dominant styles. So if I've got one open world action game started, I won't start another until that one is finished, but I can start something like a new shooter if I finished the last one. That keeps me happy with the variety I'm getting, but still lets me progress through the longer titles I start at a somewhat steady pace. "Big" games can take me months to finish sometimes, but I keep a sense of progress with the little ones scattered in.

For example, my current list of "active" backlog titles looks like this:

• Far Cry 4 - shooter (big)
• Witcher 3 - RPG (big)
• Dreamfall: Chapters - adventure/story (big)
• Sonic Generations - platformer (short)
• Shadowrun: Dragonfall - tactical rpg (I consider this short)

I can pretty much throw in a short game any time because they don't stick around long enough to accumulate. They are the bulk of what I buy these days, however, so it's a good thing for my backlog.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I made the mistake of doubling (tripling) up on open world games that require a hefty time investment. I intend to finish them all at some point, but it does often depend on my mood, as you say. I think that's a good way to engage it, though. I tend to be quite impressionable, so if I see a film that has a certain mood or theme to it, I'll often fancy playing a game to match that feeling or setting.

At least I'm able to manage my handheld backlog separately from my console one. Lunch hour at work gives me plenty of time to tackle smaller scale or indie titles on Vita and 3DS, which are a nice palette cleanser from the big stuff at home.

I think the most important thing is to... well, have fun. Sometimes I wanna play games, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I want to knock out a bunch of shorter/in progress games I have, and every once in a while I'll actually work on one of the long RPGs in my list

The only thing I can really say is that... if you don't like the game, then don't play it. Take it off your backlog. For whatever reason my browser doesn't wanna open your Darkadia, so I don't know if you're actually doing that, but I find in general people with big backlogs (myself included before) tend to forget that games are for fun

Also, random tip, I use HowLongToBeat to look up average game times, so when I wanna take a bigger chunk of my backlog quickly, I figure out which games are under 8 hours and knock some out

Oh, definitely. I don't feel obliged to play anything; I just think it would give me more satisfaction if I finished some more games before buying new ones (not to mention making more financial sense). Like I said, I've already relegated some titles to "Shelved" status on Darkadia, and will probably remove a couple more from the log (looking at you, PS+ Lords of the Fallen) if I find I'm not playing them at all.

In the past I used to feel like I should give games "more of a chance," but with less time and more free/cheaper titles these days, it can become tricky to maintain a balance...
