Half-Life 3: 10 years of not playing the most essential sequel in history

No, and that's the most frustrating thing. There's been no news for Episode 3 or HL3 since Episode 2 released.

Last year for the 8th anniversary of Orange Box releasing they "leaked" text files regarding Half-Life 3 into a Dota 2 update. Press call it a leak, but to me it seems an extremely obvious nod to the more desperate HL fans that tear into all updates looking for clues, especially since it was the day before / of the aniversary. They get to hint at ideas without having to speak about it or confirm anything.

http://www.valvetime.net/threads/what-are-the-leaked-hl3-txt-and-rpg-txt-files-all-about.246431/

Basically suggests there will be Quests, Ziplines and other stuff. VR stuff is mentioned also.

That is as close as you get to info, and I'd bet the reason for that is so they don't have to confirm or even talk about it - that way when there is inevitably more changes / restarts or whatever is going on - they can still say nothing.

Most essential is really overselling the series.

There's no way Valve will ever be able to satisfy the rabid fans who haven't given up hope.

Half Life 3 will come.

Whether half of us will actually be alive at that point is another matter entirely.

I don't care about that "leak," I care about them confirming they're doing development. There has been NOTHING about it. Even L4D3 (which is an "open secret") hasn't been confirmed by them.

Lol, if you expect confirmation, yeah I don't know what you were expecting. They've been over it time and time again about not talking about new games till they are done, "to avoid dissappointment of the twists and turns of their development" blah blah blah. Up to you what you want to believe on the basis of zero information. Only actual info from Valve is that they will have new VR content next year

A lot of people don't really understand that leaks are the way Valve communicates with their fans. It seems every few months we get new information about "unannounced" projects. Other things like Gabe talking to fans about Ricochet 2 and Faliszek directly answering a HL3 related question gives credence to the idea that they at least spin around in their office chairs and think about it from time to time. Of course, Valve has their hands in more projects than ever right now (despite what people seem to say in threads like these), so who knows how slow development of a high budget cinematic singleplayer shooter known for being revolutionary can go.

So in other words, they aren't actually working on HL3, despite what fans want. Okay. Thank you for confirming what I said.

Valve isn't interested in making anything that can't have all the market bs and "permanent evolving service ecosystem" and similar buzzwords which just means keep getting money from people every week instead of every 2-3 years.

Portal 2 is probably going to be the last SP thing from them for a long time.

I eagerly await the day when HL3 is longer being talked about. I've honestly stopped caring about it years ago, but every time someone mentions it, it's hard to turn away. It's like the ultimate meme that persists throughout the ages.

There were once a HL1 and HL2 and there were addons and they were great and Episode 2 never got a sequel - The End.

I remember joking back in the day after DNF was released that EP3 will take its' crown going forward, but also that it'll still be out sooner than a FF7 Remake.

In the end I was, fittingly, Half-Right.

To be completely honest, most of the people who made Half-Life what it is aren't even at Valve anymore so I'm not sure Half-Life 3, if it ever appeared, could ever live up to it's legacy.

I would just prefer some sort of official word from Valve on the series. Whether it's dead, which it probably is, or not.

I don't really need a tag, but I figured I'd get one to make people jealous. Is it working?
Maybe moreso than the game at this point, I want another "Raising The Bar" book that explains why Episode 3 never came together.

I'm kinda guessing the reason that's never gonna happen either is because there's probably specific people responsible, and being the person responsible for no more Half-Life would easily place you on the internet's shit list for life.

It's what ever you want to believe, so yes then! However, those "leaks" are plants, without a doubt and this is how Valve skirts around actually having to say anything and keeping the rabid HL fans digging into the tiniest of clues satiated, while not having to officially even confirm anything, so people like you can also look the other way and still be right. That is how they keep people talking. If they actually said anything, Valve and HL would not get anywhere near this amount of fervour from both those rabid fans and yourself doing the opposite.

I dont know....I just really try not to think about it anymore. Threads like this bring back the dark dark sadness....

But I do hold on to this small small piece of hope. That they are preparing the Vive for the next coming of Half-Life...VR. The only thing to make us all forget how they have treated us all these years.

You know what...at least Shenmue and The Last Guardian fans had hope because they knew there was a chance. With Shenmue we knew it was more funding than anything. With TLG it was long dev but we kept being assured it was being made.

Half Life 3 is dead.

This is the sad truth right here, I gave up on HL3 a few years ago..the wait was just too painful

I've been shouting to the heavens for years about this.

Steam is making Valve so much money along with their apparent
"hands off, do whatever you want" management style, it boils down to
them not really caring about HL3 or developing games themselves.

Our only hope is that they sell the I.P. or just pick a studio to get it done.

It's totally shitty how they've handled their fan base over the beloved series.

Who is it that recently lobbied for the I.P? Naughty Dog? When other studios
and industry talent keep saying they want to see HL3 get made/released...
you know they can't be happy with Valve's handling of it either.

It was fascinating to see people defending Valve over the last 15 years but imo after Episode 2 they went downhill and changed into a company like EA, they only see profits and dont care about customer service and fill their store with so many crap games.

Few shooters can match the pacing of these games, especially HL2.

Hell, Resistance 3 copied the entire story and pacing of HL2! And unsurprisingly, Resistance 3 was easily the best in the series.

I wonder if they have a stages of grief for whenever an employee tries to get Half-Life 3 in production.

The older, more bitter employees probably enjoy seeing the hopes of new employees crushed.

They're working on it. It'll probably be a Source 3 debut game or VR.
Although, the direction theyve been headed in lately, I'm not sure I even want Half-Life 3 anymore. At least a Nu-Valve vision of what it would be.

Don't really care about HL3 anymore, but I am bit annoyed that a company with pretty much unlimited resources can't be arsed to give the fans the continuation of a game they themselves decided to end on a cliffhanger.

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Just get someone else to make it, FFS.

Or a graphic novel to conclude the cliffhanger. It feels quite selfish of them to be keen to draw you into investing in the story, and then never actually finish it.

At this point, a documentary on the making of Half-Life 3 is far more enticing for me than the actual game.

I have accepted that they are not (and likely will not) make HL3. I just don't get why? Seems like it would sell enough to be profitable..

"We found a way to make money without making games and so we put that stuff on the minimum." Not that enticing really.

When VR is ready, HL3 will be ready.

This is the only scenario that has really made sense to me. EP3 probably entered development hell, and with VR on the horizon they decided to wait. Each new HL pushed the genre significantly in some way. Doing one today would just be "better".

If there was nothing going on with half life, if they had no plans to release it, they would say that. All gabe has ever said is 'when we are ready we will show it.'

anybody saying they definitively know it's not coming is telling tales from their ass. As far as it 'not living up to the hype'? what hype? an article once a year saying 'where is it'? They are specifically not discussing it for this exact reason. Also, is it that hard to believe that Valve is capable of releasing a single player game that will Impress everybody? It doesn't need to live up to some obscure definition of hype, it just needs to be a great shooter in the half life vein with some new shiny tech behind it. It'll come, I'm just not holding my breath waiting for it.

Agreed. Hire a studio to make it. I'd feel good about it in ID's hands, Visceral, Flying Wild Hog, Machine Gun Games, Insomniac or Naughty Dog.

Or sell the darn I.P. to a capable, respected developer.
