3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

There's a launcher to use old DS flashcards on newer firmware. Use that instead of messing with downgrades and risking a brick.
Do you know the name of the launcher off hand?
Is It perhaps the R4 clone from this site? http://r4i-sdhc.com/downloade.asp

I just had to update the files to V1.84b on the SD card and it works on the newest firmware. I have R4i rts 3ds.
I have the same one and I've tried the same thing. Even formatted the card and started from scratch. Works fine in the DS, but my 3DS doesn't like it

I have tried it on one old 3ds and two new 3ds (One with and one without custom firmware) which all have the latest firmware 11.1 something. Maybe your firmware version (10.6) is too old, or it's something else you've done with your 3ds that I haven't.

Upgraded to AL9H a couple of days ago. Wow, that was very, very easy lol. Now I just gotta figure out what to delete to clear up some memory on my SD card since I still have my old EmuNAND stuff on it. My card (32gb) says I have 13gb left and I've already deleted the old emuNAND auri/whatever stuff and left all the folders that was suggested on the guide. Don't really know what else is safe to delete. I'm assuming it has something to do with the Nintendo 3DS folder or something because I did have a couple games installed on the EmuNAND.

Edit: Let's say I just want to do a full wipe and start from "scratch" with just the AL9H stuff. How would I do that without losing AL9H?

Ran into some problems downgrading my N3DS 10.7.0-32U. I managed to get the homebrew launcher installed using Powersaves and OoT but during the 9.2 downgrade process I got an error. I rebooted and tried to complete the downgrade but now whenever I go into the homebrew launcher I get a message about an error occurring and for me to power off the system.

Under system settings it shows my system as 9.2.0-20U but searching this thread indicates it's a partial downgrade. I tried running Browserhax to complete the downgrade but every time I open up the browser it asks for me to update the system before I can go online.

Any ideas?

The OoT save is version-specific. If you reinstall the hacked save but select 9.2 this time, it might work.

Holy smokes! It worked and I can get into HomeBrew Launcher again! Now to cross my fingers and attempt the downgrade again.

EDIT: Completed my downgrade and everything's working perfectly. Thanx again, flowsnake :)

A9LH is installed on the nand memory chip, so it will survive a complete SD wipe.
So after formatting, you just have to put back the custom firmware on SD.

Howdy! I'm still rocking Rei 10.5.30U. I haven't touched this for months. Am I still safe/should I upgrade when I boot up and it asks me to update? I remember back when I stopped using this Rei could be updated directly just through the menu. I want to make sure I'm still safe.

Actually...I'm googling now and not seeing any Reinand updates since month. I assume this firmware has gone the way of the dinosaur?

AuReiNAND which became Luma3DS is pretty much the only game in town now. There a couple of others but they are very much targeted at developers.

Ah. Thank you much! Any idea if I'm still safe to update through the custom firmware?

Oh wait. Googling makes it sound like Reinand and AuReinand are completely different.

Gotcha. Welp, I'm going to see if I can figure this out. I just downloaded Luma3DS, and tried following this guide. So far I'm left with a black screen, so I'm not off to a good start. I'm so bad at understanding what is doing what, and I keep seeing terms for things that I'm not sure if it is CFW, bootloaders of some kind, or what. I'm going to keep at it and hope for the best. I have so much junk I'm contemplating wiping my SD card and starting from scratch. That won't screw me, will it?

Yeah. I give up. Anyone have a clue if I can delete my SD card and just start again with a guide? Or have a good guide to recommend?

Sorry to keep bumping. I don't know what I did, but I finally got it to boot to the initial setup screen for Luma. I selected "Show NAND or user string in system settings", then saved and rebooted as told to. It rebooted and I'm back to a black screen....I feel like I was so close.

Are you using a Menuhax / EmuNAND setup or a a9lh / SysNAND setup ? Luma3DS works for both but most guides assume the latter now.

Honestly, it's been so long that I wasn't sure. But I do see Menuhax and EmuNAND folders on my card, so must be that. From what I've gathered, it sounds like A9LH is a lot better though. I'm not sure how to jump from my regular ReiNAND over to using A9LH and Luma3DS, but in a perfect world that is what I would like to do.

The first thing to do is to get your setup working then. Which items did you check in Luma setup ? And do you have a boot.3dsx in the root of your SD card ?

After that you need to dump your EmuNAND using EmuNAND9 / Hourglass9.

From there things should be relatively simple.

I checked "Show NAND or user string in system settings" then when it rebooted, black screen. When I load up the 3DS, I still get all the text like it is attempting to load something up. Then black.

Also, I do see a boot.3dsx. I think it came from the Luma3DSv6.3.1 zip, inside of the menuhax folder. Oh wait....fleeting memories. Do I take the Luma3DS.3dsx and rename that to boot? Nope, that was a bad idea. I undid that.

I can still hold my buttons and boot into regular firmware 9.2.0-20U, if that matters. And now I can't get it to boot into anything other then the 9.2.0....it just automatically jumps right into it.Duh. Never mind. I had my SD card out. I'm doing really bad at this.

Humm. We could work with that but we really need to make sure your EmuNAND isn't corrupted before we dump it.

Could you reinstall ReiNAND and verify your EmuNAND boots ? If it does we can do this through Browserhax.
If it doesnt try reinstalling menuhax from scratch.

Thanks for helping me with this. I really do appreciate. I'm going to attempt to re-install ReiNAND now.

"An error occured while loading the payload." I must be missing something here.

OKay...getting somewhere. I found one of my backup folders and put a "Boot.3dsx" file from it onto my SD card, as I think that is the issue. It immediately booted up to The Homebrew Launcher. Well, that is something!

I did it! I don't know how, but I accidentally got ReiNAND working again. So what am I trying to do now to verify EmuNAND? Sadly, it has been so long I'm not sure what EmuNAND is/does.

EmuNAND is the updated NAND on your SD Card that things are installed too / you can update. It's what you usually boot to when you use ReiNAND assuming ReiNAND Boots and displays a system version above 9.2. You should be good.

The next step would be to add Hourglass9 to your homebrew folder and launch it from their Homebrew Launcher, from there dump your EmuNAND and SysNAND (minimum size should be fine) and backup the dump files and SHA files to your computer. You want to do this from sysNAND though , so either by launching HBL from Menuhax directly or from Browserhax.

After that I need to know if you're using an old 3DS or a New3DS. (2DSs are old for this purpose).

I just put Hourglass on my 3DS. But I downloaded 3 seperate Hourglass zips, and they are a bunch of .bin files. I can't get any to launch from Homebrew. All my other homebrew applications look like they have .3dsx files in them. Hrm...And I'm using a New3DS

I hope it is just as good---I put Decrypt9 on my 3DS and am performing backups as we speak.

Decrypt9 is fine. I thought Hourglass9 had a 3dsx version for some reason.

Just checking that everything you want to use in future was on your emuNAND not your sysNAND ? And that you don't have anything potentially problematic on your emuNAND like FBI installed over H&S or patches TWL or region changing.

I should have it all on emuNAND. I didn't do anything fancy like region changing or anything either.

Okay , excellent , make sure FBI and the HBL are the most recent versions and put RedNAND9/EmuNAND9 in your homebrew and make sure it launches.

Then uninstall menuhax (from EmuNAND first then sysNAND to make sure it's gone).

Then back up everything on the SD to your computer, (just transfer the entire contents to a new folder on the PC).

After that use Browserhax on SysNAND to launch Homebrew Channel and then EmuNAND9 and format the card without EmuNAND. Then go back to EnuNAND9s menu and press the button to safely eject the SD. Then copy your previous babkup back.

After that you can follow Plailect's guide for 9.2 with Browser from the beginning. When you reach the bit to install a9hl before installing it, you should also get However at the end use Hourglass9/Decrypt9 to restore your emuNAND backup to SysNAND (use the keep a9lh option) and you're good.

All done! You are awesome. I found the Plailect guide prior to you helping days ago, but I was so lost trying to understand where I was or understand any of it out that it didn't help me at all. With your help I was able to make sense of it tonight in the last 30 minutes and started going through it. As of posting this, I am now up-to-date and running Luma. I can't thank you enough! Final question for you---is there anything in particular that is special or new about Luma in regards to my old ReiNAND 10.5 I was running? Fancy features or precautions I need to take?

No worries, glad I could help.

It's got a bunch of fancy features but nothing you need to worry about (it's got what used to be manjal AGB / TWL patches built in), it's deliberately setup to do as much automatically as possible and keep things as safe as possible. Except maybe for the manual region/language changing per game that's mainly for being able to use DLC with out of region games described in the Luma wiki.

The only warning is that if you have GW never system update while in GW mode, it lacks FIRM protection in SysNAND mode and you'll brick your N3DS.

My copy of Rhythm Paradise Megamix arrived today and when I try to boot it with the region-free launcher, it just gives me a black screen. Am I SOL?

(yes, I updated my homebew launcher to 2.7 gamma)

EDIT: I got it to boot using HANS, hell yeah!

I'm trying to install HB, but I'm a little confused.

I have an old 3DS with homebrew already and a New 3DS XL on 11.0.0-33U (my main unit, where I'd like to install it)

Following this guide: https://plailect.github.io/Guide/dsiware-downgrade

- How does the process of getting your main NNID back in the New 3DS work exactly? I'm really afraid of losing my NNID. Do you lose your friend list too?

- Both o3DS and N3DS need to be on the latest [official] firmware to do the system transfer?
If I access the eShop witht the old 3DS to purchase the DSiWare games needed, I'd have to update it to the latest firmware (currently 11.2.0-35) and after the system transfer to the N3DS, this one would be in that firmware, right? I thought Nintendo already patched the exploits, making it impossible to install homebrew on 11.2-0

When I did the transfer to my New 3DS I lost my friends list but that was because I did a format beforehand. It unlinked the NNID from the system (from the hardware, it could still re-link once the transfer was complete). I don't know what happens if you transfer while a NNID (and games etc) is still on there. I re-downloaded all my digital games after the transfer.

Both 3DS need the latest firmware UNLESS you use ctr-httpwn from the homebrew menu launcher thing. That bypasses any network firmware checks so you can get on the eshop, use the browser and perform system transfers without needing the latest firmware. To get that stuff on the N3DS for the transfer I used OOT hax or whatever it is called. I set up the save file on the cart using my Old3DS then launched the hax on the new 3DS.

What's ctr-httpwn?

Also, https://plailect.github.io/Guide/ got updated. It now has this legend:

So, I guess I should wait? Not needing to do a system transfer would be great.

So I finally got around to getting homebrew on my 3DS, but I'm hesitant to downgrade. My system is both an ambassador system and has DSi Ware on it which the guide warns as red flags for bricking upon downgrading.

All I really want to do is bypass the region lock, so is there any big reason I should downgrade?

You should theoretically be able to make a NAND Backup *before* downgrading (in pretty much every case because NANDBackups and Downgrades require the same access; read/write access to NAND). That means you should be able to modify the downgrade process in a way that allows you to keep that stuff if you wanted too. I can help with that if you like and can tell me what type of 3DS and version you're on.

As someone who has both of those things... I'm not sure what the problem is?

Follow the guide, make a nand backup, format your system, downgrade, get al9h, etc etc. and then when you get to the step, restore your nand and everything is okay dokay with ambassador and all of your DSi ware in tact.

There was one version of the guide that recommended doing a System Format before the first time you'd do a NANDbackup. Since it's just had yet another rewrite I'm not sure if the current one does though.

So I bricked my new3DS and I'm sending it in for repairs, since it's still under warranty. Assuming they'll fix it, would you guys recon I could still install cfw? Or do they load it with the latest firmware right away?

If they even fix it. If they do fix it (which I doubt, since it won't be hard to tell a cfw was installed), they'll probably flash it to the latest version.

They'll load it with the latest firmware. I sent mine in for a creaky back panel once, nothing to do with the actual powering of the unit and they upgraded it to the latest.

Hi, I want to instal cfw to my 3DS but I have some questions first, hopefully someone can help me.

I'm willing to format my og3ds before doing this because I read that sometimes there are problems with ambassador games so here are my questions

1)Can I do a backup? And if so, what type of backup?
2)Can you do a nand backup before downgrading? Because in every guide I've read they do a backup after downgrading.
3)If I format my 3ds do I have to link a nnid before doing anything or can I downgrade without a nnid linked?
4)After I'm done with everything, can I link back muy original nnid?

You can't do a full NANDbackup before downgrading from 11.X to 10.X , the access isn't there (I suspect you probably could but dumping 1 - 2 GIG at DSi SD card write speeds would probably make you wish you couldn't anyway). You should be able to do a NANDbackup before downgrading from 10.X to 9.2 though I can't say I personally remember doing this.

If you need an NNID linked (in order to do a DSiware / Steelhax transfer due to being on 11.0/11.1) you won't have any choice, as you'll be forced to link it by the System Transfer.

Yes, you can absolutely restore your original NNID when you're done , if you needed to unlink it for some reason.

Updated what?

NTR still works for me with the latest BootNTR.

When I try to load it it tells me my fw is unsupported. I looked on the gbatemp thread it says do not update to 11 fw since he stopped developing it or something.
I tried 3.2 and the 3.4 builds and neither work. Im on fw 11.1.0
