Rockies owner Dick Monfort says Rockies’ payroll will set a record high in 2017

Rockies owner Dick Monfort did not take center stage Monday at Coors Field Monday as Bud Black was introduced as the team’s new manager. As Black and general manager Jeff Bridich fielded questions, Monfort hung to the side, watching and listening.

Later, when Monfort was asked about the club’s hopes to be a playoff contender in 2017, he said, “Our payroll will be higher this year. It will be a record this year.”

According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Rockies’ 2016 payroll obligations for the 25-man roster on opening day was $112.6 million, 19th in the majors but the highest in franchise history. That figure, however, included the $15.6 million the club had to pay shortstop Jose Reyes, even though the Rockies released him. The Rockies will owe Reyes another $22 million in 2017.

It's amazing to think that an owner as terrible as Monfort is doesn't get enough attention in the national media to be blasted upon.

Hell no. Pay with the market will bear. I'm a free market guy.

Charlie Finley did lead a remarkable series of events when free agency was implemented though.

And he had some other ideas how it should have gone, some even Marvin Miller liked a lot.

Bought 3 off eBay. One was a legit 2001 Tony Gwynn camo Mitchell & Ness, the other 2 were fake.

I don't do that anymore. I just invest and buy the real deal.

I'm going to preach a bit to the choir, but Xia:

Please, do what /r/baseball did and ban any talk of politics and baseball for a while. I love this place, it's my home on GAF. I've had arguments and disagreements with people based on teams, based on players. But I still love all of you as people, as friends to talk baseball with. To learn, to be fans.

I really don't want this place to denigrate into the sort of mud slinging for which is currently present on OT GAF. I really do want this place to be a sanctuary so we can get away and simply talk the sport we all love.

This is more a community decision than anything. If MLB-GAF wants to keep thread discussion to sports and condiments only, we can help with that. Individual players' actions, viewpoints, etc though may make that difficult to completely split that off though. And there's also some inevitable cross-over of politics and baseball if anything related to public votes for various team/stadium referendums, regulations or anti-trust topics, congressional hearings, etc enters the picture.

I'm willing to let it go to the community. Still, I think we just need to calm down and focus on the game we love for a while.

Jose Altuve isn't apart of a possible trade, to be clear here. He is the sales pitch to get Miggy to cut his no trade clause because they are both hometown friends.

it's a traditional & convenient target, i.e., real americans aren't liberals, it's just hollywood elite, etc. etc. it's a gleeful morning after "get out of MY country" tweet.
