Donald J. Trump elected 45th President of the United States

Growing up in a post 9/11 world, it has always given me some peace of mind that at least at the very top we are still led by just and sane individuals who won't blame the entire Muslim population for the crimes of a few fanatics. I've never feared that my own government would join in with the hate speech and thinking of the mobs outside the mosques. I've never feared having my bank account shut down or travel rights restricted or practicing my religion with a peace of mind. Not in this country, not in America.

For the first time in my life, I am genuinely afraid of my own government. I fear for my wife, my parents, my siblings and their families. I fear now more than ever for every woman who chooses to wear a hijab and for all the Sikhs who are constantly mistaken for being Muslims. I feel like a sitting duck in pre-war Germany. Like the Japanese in a pre-war America. I never imagined having these thoughts cross my mind, of having my entire way of life be threatened. Not here, not in 2016 America. I am reminded of Eli Wiesel's Night when he walks into a concentration camp and says to his dad, "this can't happen, it's 1942. The world won't let it happen."

I do ardently hope that my fears are misplaced and that this right wing government won't be as threatening to religious and civil liberties as their rhetoric makes them to appear. However, the reality is that Trump has surrounded himself with outspoken Islamaphobes, bigots, and racists. He has been endorsed and has emboldened the kkk and every hate group in this country. More than anything, he has normalized this speech within mainstream American dialogue.

This will be a rough time to be a minority in America. Certainly a very scary time to be a Muslim in America.

People need to read this

I guess all we can do now is hope he makes good on the half-decent things he's said.

Like infrastructure spending. And...well, I guess that's it.

So the GOP holds the House, Senate, POTUS and soon the SCOTUS.

Does this mean there is basically barely any opposition unless the GOP disagrees internally? Not entirely familiar with your political system so I don't know how much power this grants the conservatives.

Can someone answer me this, if the popular vote isn't the final word, how can you even qualify this as a democracy? Who are the overseers of the Electoral College?

because we're a republic i guess technically.

i mean we still vote on tuesday because sunday is the sabath and it takes about a day to travel by horse to polling places and leaves enough time to get to market on wednesday.

im not making that up and that should tell you all you need to know about how modern our process is

As I just said above Americans believing just about anything spouted with charismatic reinforcement during an election cycle.

I mean, "ending money in politics" and "anti establishment". Trump? Yeah... okay.

lol exactly. hes more crooked than the rest of em. what a joke you guys are america

I guess the lesson here is that no matter what you do, say, or how little experience you have, if you're a rich white reality TV star you can land the job you want.

I can't wait to tell my son that in a few years.

Dems can filabuster some bills, but Pubs can get rid of the filabuster and get a blank check.

That's really not all.

Positives of Trump:

-Anti establishment
-ending congressional term limits
-limiting unfair lobbying
-Ending money in politics
-an outsider with a radical message

Hmmmm.. I wonder where the Bernie voters went.

You have to be one big idiot to believe that a president that ran on a mostly REGRESSIVE platform will enact some of the most PROGRESSIVE measures ever, like literally upending the entire political establishment.

I lost faith in democracy. Brexit first and now this.
I don't think the people are capable or deserving of democracy. They're too stupid.

It doesn't matter how much you hate Hillary Clinton. That you can be so uninformed that you'd vote for this obvious con man means you don't deserve to vote. It takes all of 2 minutes and 10 taps on that supercomputer in your pocket to see how dumb this orangutan is. But nope. Proudly choose ignorance instead.

Democracy has failed because people are just too stupid.

- Seemingly pro-LGBT by his actions in the past.
- Maybe pro-Marijuana, to the extent of not messing with legal states by sending in the DEA?

She lost and the Dems in general, I think, because you have a large segment in the population that don't know what their future holds because of the people that still work in the "old economy". You can't take the blue collar workers and tell them their livelihood is outdated and have nothing for them to hope for. Having said that, of course Trump will do nothing to help them but they bought the message

This was a fucking wipe out. The DNC should be embarrassed with how colossally they fucked this one up. House, Senate, Oval Office, new Repub governorships. A routing. Can't believe Pollsters had her starting the night with 268 electoral votes. Shame on Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC leadership for pushing such an unlikeable figure down our throats.

The DNC needs to be destroyed and rebuilt from the ashes. Their corruption and tone deaf dedication to clinton has fucked this country.

Newsflash, he is a liar. If you believe anything he says, well that is on you.

That's what's funny about all this- you all say that about Trump, but REFUSED- ALL OUT FUCKING REFUSED to to say the same about Hillary during the Primary and GE. Disappointing Hypocrisy at play here.

Yes, basically. The last 8 years show you what happen when one party has enough of a presence to interfere with the other parties plans, but this next four years the GOP has pretty much free reign.

Honest question: are you American and if so did you sleep through every history/government class growing up?

Does this mean he'll release his taxes now?

Nope, but the obsession over Trump releasing his taxes like it actually mattered was a small part of how the Clinton campaign got ripped away from meaningful campaigning and tossed into a war of identity politics that it was never going to win against Trump. Like, to be a millennial, Hillary literally got trolled. Pepe memes on the Clinton site just a small :O at where we went to.

Tax avoidance is rampant in Government and by all the large Corporations people on GAF fight tooth and nail to defend as their favourite phone provider/online retailer/etc. Donald Trump releasing his taxes was a red fucking herring. The amount of time spent going after that like it was of any importance was sad.

That's what's funny about all this- you all say that about Trump, but REFUSED- ALL OUT FUCKING REFUSED to to say the same about Hillary during the Primary and GE. Disappointing Hypocrisy at play here.

Well not me personally, I've never been a big fan of Hillary at all. All I've really said on GAF is keep Trump out, and the occasional shit, Obama is 10x better than Hillary.

That's correct.

Those on the left will need to depend on and exacerbate the deep tears within the Republicans that were created in this election to prevent their legislation.

People still believe Trump is going to shove it to career politicians when his entire cabinet is going to be full of the biggest career politician stooges on the planet like Rudy and Newt.

Hillary has a voting record that people point out. And considering that Cit united was a case against her, it was pretty clear she'd remove it.

???

As for your "lobbying" and "ending money" points... I have a bridge to sell you.

Why? Does it change anything? He did the show for a long time, didn't impact shit. And I am kind of done laughing about these things anyway.

For entertainment. We'll need something to laugh at in between the tears.

People close to me voted for Trump. Everywhere I frequent on the internet was clearly for Hillary.

I didn't vote, but even still. Interesting.

I still want to know how two people hated this much made it this far? Speaks volumes for people as a whole. At least in this country.

Hey I'm just doing what Hillary supporters here demanded I do during the Primary. Take her word for it, even though her track record says otherwise. It works both ways.

Yep. Y'all wanna be mad? Take it to the DNC.

So is it now the new norm to "Grab women by the Pussy"? I mean we just elected a guy for President who bragged about sexually assaulting women. I'm still stunned how so many people were able to just brush that aside for the sake of Supreme Court picks.

Some of these commentators who are crowing on TV and blaming the media for ignoring disaffected white working class or completely ignoring how the vast majority of minorities in this country feel completely trampled on this morning because we've now made it acceptable in the the modern age to have a President make racist and sexist statements and policy proposals with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

So many of Trumps statements, ideas, and past behaviors should have been unforgivable sins. But the media is just treating this like a normal horse race with a surprise twist. Not the fact that a President got elected at the expense of overtly demeaning/demonizing minorities that hasn't been seen in the modern era.

I think the disaffected white working class is something that is obviously going to be a topic of discussion while people try to make sense of all this. We need to dissect how this happened and that is going to lead to a lot of uncomfortable discussion about the large white base who have huge voting power and really don't give a fuck about racism and sexism.

They can't be ignored and they won't be shamed out of existence for their sexism, racism and homophobia or their enabling of a racist and sexist president. They can stay quiet but they still have a vote. The disaffected white working class absolutely needs to be the topic of conversation.

Her track record did not say otherwise.

Also, you can expect a liberal judge to be against citizen's united. You can't expect a conservative one to be.

If you think half those things are going to happen I'm gonna have to laugh at you.

I wouldn't even say congressional term limits are a positive. It basically guarantees that no one becomes competant at politics and we get newbies every couple terms.

Well its better than the same dickhead we have had in this district for the past 24 years.

All while simultaneously taking advantage of it. Her special interest courting is what makes me not believe that. Anything else is just fantasy.

It did. So much denial...

He proof was all over the internet but for some strange reason, eyes were covered and ears plugged. So baffling to me.

The primary system is a mistake in my opinion. It's gotten us a string of terrible candidates, in fact, I would say it has never gotten us a great president. I believe the parties are only maintaining the system because of the optics. If they both ended it, it would be fine but if only one did then the other party would use that as an avenue for attack.

Well its better than the same dickhead we have had in this district for the past 24 years.

You could just, I don't know, vote them out or something.
