Why is the Xbox One so slow to install from disc?

I made a good yesterday I played Modern Warfare remastered but when I stopped and turned the console off it hadn't finished reinstalling. So it started all over again today. Decided to time how long it takes it has been installing since 2pm and progress is only at 44%.

Why does it take so long to install from disc on Xbox One, the PS4 typically does installs from disc in well under one hour.

EDIT: LOL autocorrect on the title. Bring on the bad jokes.

EDIT 2: it seems you now have the option to correct thread titles now. Great news.

Xbox One downloads the full game even if you have a disc (cuz lol?)

No it doesnt.

It just installs the game and applies the day one update if the game has it at the same time. Thats why alot of people install the game first offline and then go online and do the patch. Faster that way.

People have been asking this since release, and Microsoft is somehow unable to solve it. Phil Spencer said years ago that solving this had a high priority.

is it actually faster? like, is the total time to full install shorter (including the time to download the patch)?

It's really odd. I feel like its patches though. For example the bio shock collection installed pretty quickly all things considered.

Though I remember gears ultimate took forever back in the day. But it also need d patches.

This was of the major reasons why I dumped the XBO that I bought over the summer just a couple of weeks ago. It's too damned slow. I had hoped that it would replace my PS4 for multiplats because it doesn't require surgery/HDD replacement to add storage space, but the whole experience was so slow that I never bothered with it after spending so long only installing three games.

You only skip the patch by installing the games offline. The install times are still VERY slow offline compared to the Playstation 4.

I found it much faster. For example, a game as big as Gears 4 took me 40 minutes to install from the disc, and then an additional 30-40 minutes for the patch.

If I did the whole process online, it would have easily been 4 hours minimum.

Just install offline then go online for any updates, always felt that was the quickest way for myself.

Most recent one I've installed was Titanfall 2 and it took roughly 35 minutes from disc.

Anyways, it downloads updates first then installs. The actual install itself is slow as well but I don't remember the last time I bought a disc.

When you are downloading and installing it seems to affect eachother and going slower overall. Probably because of writing to the HDD i dont know. But first install and then download seems to go faster at a overall time. :)

I absolutely assure you that the Xbox One does not install from the disc if you are online. You have to disable your connection first, then install.

Source: Titanfall 2 was taking forever to install and it said it was going to take 14 hours to install when I put my disc in, and I looked online how to speed that shit up and it said to sign out, then it will actually install from the disc. Took about 30 minutes after that.

Mine is super fast but I don't have a potatoe for Internet and use a external raid 0 enclosure for all my games.

Sure at launch I felt it was slower but with my current storage and internet speed combined it's very fast.

If you Xbox one doesn't have good download speed then definitely install the disk first.

I buy mostly digital anyway so it's very quick.

If you're installing to the internal disk drive it can be slow as hell because you're reading from the bluray drive while writing to the internal. At the same time the system is downloading any patches and writing to the same internal drive. I'm not sure how MS schedules writes to disk but it clearly isn't great for the internal drive.

External drives are much better in this regard. My son recently got PvZ GW2 and I installed it directly to the external drive (a 256GB SSD) and install was fast and smooth. It copied stuff from the bluray while downloading the patch from the internet. I don't have access to the screenshot I took but the install process was under 30 minutes with 60Mbit internet.

Yea there's no special chip to help it, it's basically as fast as the drive allows it for BR discs (4X or 20MB/s).
Also you don't have to set the console to offline to do it that way, it gives you a prompt when you first start the installation to get the patch later.

I assure you it DOES install from disc, I have a screenshot that shows the progress screen showing read speed from the disc as well as from the internet. Unfortunately I'm not near my Windows PC where the screenshot is.

As others have said, it downloads and installs patches while installing the game from the disc. It's a really stupid process which is why you're better off going offline, installing, and then going online again to get the patches.

Todays update even shows you the install rate from the disc and the patch download rate separately

The Xbox One S was shipped with a 4K player, and they still wasn`t able to fix this? Doesn`t make sense. Probably a software issue.

I'm not sure that would necessarily speed up the read/write speed of the older media though. Is that data out there somewhere?

I think he just means, when redesigning it they made a massive change such as a 4K blu-ray drive but they did do any hardware modifications to improve install times

Or you can choose to install the update later when the prompt pops up. No need to go offline.

This is all kinds of wrong.

If you are connected to the Internet It installs the game from the disk AND downloads the day one patch

It's just slow. I have an insanely fast internet connection that can download 15 GB in 10 minutes. Infinite Warfare took well over an hour to install from disx, so unless there's a 70gb patch the process is just very slow

There is.

I know you get a prompt when a game in general has an update when you try to launch it, but do you get a prompt when you first install from disc? I thought it just automatically starts installing/downloading the patch.

I'm all digital so I don't deal with this much

IIRC

Infinite Warfare (On Disc) 45GB
Infinite Warfare (Patch) 6GB
Modern Warfare (On Disc) 400MB (yes MB)
Modern Warfare (Download) 40GB+

Game isn't on the disc itself, it only triggers the download for Modern Warfare Remastered.

Old, but still valid:

Assassin's Creed IV:
Xbox One (offline, no update): 5 minutes 50 seconds
Xbox One (with update, fastest connection): 7 minutes 2 seconds
Xbox One (with update, 10Mbps connection): 10 minutes 32 seconds
PS4: 42 seconds

The rest of these were tested on our office Wi-Fi which is around 9-11Mbps. It may have been faster on a wired connection, but you can compare your own connection speed here. These are our results:

Need For Speed Rivals:
XBO: 09:25 (including update)
PS4: 00:32

Just Dance 2014:
XBO: 08:48 (including update)
PS4: 00:45

NBA Live 14:
XBO: 16:26 (including update)
PS4: 00:35

FIFA 14:
XBO: 16:06 (including update)
PS4: 00:34

Madden 25:
XBO: 9:38 (including update)
PS4: 00:38

You do get a prompt. I'm mostly physical so far this gen and if there is an update available when I'm first installing, it always asks me first whether to install the disc or install the update.

Yes even with disc games I reinstall DS3 on my new One S and it prompted.

ah, well if there is a prompt why do people bother with the going offline nonsense? just skip the patch and do it later

You can say no, you don't have to go offline.

It takes about 40 minutes to install a full blu-ray probably similar to how long it takes to install a full disc on a PS4 due to the blu-ray drive speeds.
But on PS4 you can start playing way, way sooner.

It won't let me install Modern Warfare remastered from disc alone.

Holy shit - 45GB update. Is that really the update or just the game. @_@

I don't really buy discs but I actually think they're very close in install speed but other factors slow Xbox down.

The Xbox dl the update while the install which slows it down and PlayStation has the quick start better prioritized in the development tools.

Games like Mafia, GTA, NBA, Battlefront are the same on both. All praise to Sony for killing them on most titles.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's even less for MWR, like 100 MB. It's literally the splash screen and then a warning that tells you to go online and download the whole game

It does and the new dashboard proves it.

From my past experiance the installs are fine if you go offline to do so, while connected to the internet the xbox also pulls the patches to get the game up to date and if a game has a 10gb patch, well it's going to add time depending on your download speeds and other things like server traffic.
