Where do you get that 4:2:2 is 12-bit only?
The P-Series is 10-bit, not 12-bit. I don't believe there is any 12-bit content, Dolby Vision or otherwise. If the P-Series would to get a 12-bit signal, though, it'll downsample, same as any other UHDTV.
Sorry, what I mean is, 4:2:2 in the HDMI 2.0 spec is only available on 12 bit. I don't know why. 4:2:2 should be possible in there but its not in the HDMI 2.0 spec.
The chart on the last page and the other chart in this thread both say that HDMI 2.0 can do 4:0:0 or 4:4:4 or RGB at 8 bit, only 4:2:0 at 10 bit, 4:20 and 4:2:2 at 12 bit.
And this chart clearly shows otherwise.
Thats seems to be a 4K HDR set.
Make sure you are in game mode, and have this setting in place!
"
HDMI Signal format
Enhanced 4K HDMI signal format
"
It is not a default setting, you have to dig in and change it for proper HDR
And you need to be in HDMI input 2 or 3
More misinformation. It is only 4:2:0 that the P-Series is bugged.Listen HDR is done in 4:2:0 10 bits, due to bandwidth limitations. HDR 10 in the future with new ports and increased bandwidth could support 422 or 444 properly. For now HDR 10 is 4:2:0 . Vizio Sets are acting strange with HDR10 on both Xbox One S and Ps4 pro..
What?!Exactly it should be doing either 4:2:0 @ 10 bits or 4:4:4 @ 8 bits. Dolby vision does 12 bit processing panel is not 12 bit though. New Sony does some 12 bit processing(panel is 10 bit) too this helps eliminate dithering/Banding..
Right, and for whatever reason DeeBatch is telling people to not set their Pros to Automatic. It's not about lazy or not. The PRO will pick the highest IQ possible If you have automatic on.
No. Read the key at the bottom. Only bolded items are part of the 2.0 spec.
4:2:0, 4:4:4 and RBG at 8 bit 4k60
4:2:0 at 10 bit 4k60
4:2:0 and 4:2:2 at 12 bit 4k60.
As I said, I don't know why 4:2:2 wasn't an option for 10 bit since its clearly possible to do. But they didn't do it.
I don't even remember what we are talking about other that the HDMI 2.0 spec lol.
422 is not required to be supported to be HDMI 2.0 compliant, but it is does meet the bandwidth limitations, meaning if the source and sink can decode it properly, there is nothing really preventing it from working.
Absolutely.
All I've said is that its not "supported" in the HDMI 2.0 spec. That might mean some TVs don't play well with it. I don't know.
As I said, when I get my tv I'll try both and see what I see.
No, seriously, you need to stop this. You are spreading misinformation, in addition to insulting people.
Read this.

But surely as it's backward compatable with 1.4 spec it would still work over 2.0?
HDMI 1.4 supported 4:2:2, but it didn't support 4k.
I genuinely don't know. I'm just looking at "supported" charts.
Dolby vision processing is 12 bits not the panel. Here is the White paper http://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-vision/dolby-vision-white-paper.pdf
Not trying to insult anyone. Hdr10 is 4:2:0 this is the standard that 4k hdr is delivered in. What is going on with gaming I don't know as it should be 4:2:0 . Ps4 pro does not play HDR content Via streaming yet. This will say much when we can check the video info when set to automatic. HDR is a big huge mess in gaming right now.. Only 3 titles do it good.. Forza Horizon 3, Gears of war 4 and Ratchet and Clank. I hear good things about BF1 but have not tried it in HDR yet. My Number one complaint with Hdr gaming is they are not using REC2020. I would like to know if any Ps4 pro games will support WCG of HDR.
Sony is all over the place with HDR. The Ps4 Vanilla does a worse job than the pro.. I am sure that real HDMI 2.0A port helps this.. Some games are still dark though. The games On Ps4 pro right now are not made with hdr they were tacked on and it shows.. Last of us looks pretty good in Hdr. Ratchet and clank I thought did HDR excellent. The pro shows off this game.
Movie HDR looks way better than gaming HDR right now. This is due to WCG(rec2020) the colours are just so much better. Anyways for any HDR video content check and make sure it's 4:2:0. For HDR gaming if you have banding switch to 420 also for accurate hdr10 switch to YUV420.
Absolutely.

Got questions for you.
For somebody that does not have a 4k TV yet.
Do you recommend waiting a bit for HDR to settle and become more unified among brands, and to maybe use proper WCG % and what not ? If not, what TV would you recommend, that handles colors and HDR well without gigantic amount of input delay ?
Do you think an adapter would allow the ps4 Pro to support good HDR/update once the standard is refined or is the console stillborn in that regard ?
We will have to agree to agree then.
Ahh, that just the thing. 1.4 did support 4K resolutions. It also added a 'data channel' which is why PS4 can output HDR without HDMI 2.0.
More misinformation. It is only 4:2:0 that the P-Series is bugged.

Fine, be like that
Didn't think it did 4k60 though?
People can set it to whatever.. Just make sure its's 4:2:0 if you want accurate reproduction of HDR 10 for movies and shows.. HDR10 is spec'd graded to 4:2:0 chroma why would you want it at anything else.
Yes wait till Jan @ CES Samsung is releasing New Quantum dots panels with new tech. They will reach 98% of Rec 2020(many other Tv's will have high % in 2017 too) and HDR10 will get Dynamic metadata . Also some rumblings about HDMI 2.1 but unknown if HW or software update. 2017 is good year to get HDR all should be stable.. This years Samsung sets though will get Dynamic Metadata update reported by Samsung.
So how do i know how many bits i have and if i am using 4:4:4 or somehting else?
Is there supposed to be a setting on the TV to see these facts, or through the PS4?
yup yup, here is a nice history of HDMI standards, for people who enjoy this sort of thing.

For movies, yes. We haven't heard from Naughty Dog or Sucker Punch or anyone else how they have mastered their HDR.
Lets wait and hear it from the horses mouth before we make up our minds.
it only saysUnder video settings in Ps4 you can check info.
That to me looks like it says 1.4 supported 4k, but doesn;t mention anything about 60fps until 2.0.

Colour Format RBG
HDR on Your TV Not Supported
HDCP 1.4

Dynamic metadata is something similar used by Dobly Vision (but at 12 bits) if I understand ?
What does it mean concretely with the ps4pro ? Will the console bottleneck the new TVs ?
I already bought the console anyway, just waiting for the TV now. I'm not rich by any mean so I'd rather wait for something competent. Knowing that there is always something better on the horizon, but I want a minimum here in terms of render with blacks, colors, and hdr. I'm used to high quality PC monitor so not worth getting a bad TV over it even with current hdr.
Interesting though ! Thanks for the info.
A Samsung HU7200What Tv do you have ?
Dynamic metadata should be just a software update. Samsung said this years tv will get update and they all have hdmi 2.0a ports.
A Samsung HU7200
The product details tell me it has 4:4:4 as well as HDCP 2.2
I've already set the HDMI port the PS4 uses to "UHD Colour Mode"
This is likely true, but will devs implement dynamic metadata in games? That has yet to be done. My hunch is that the will stick with static metadata to ensure highest compatibility between sets.
Dynamic metadata would need to determined frame by frame, I understand how that works for a video, but not for a game.
Possibly, it becomes object based? really not sure.
Thanks for the helpOnly hdmi port 1 supports it.. Pretty sure its only one port on that Tv.. Try all. I have tested that Tv it does hdr.. Lets trouble shoot now.. switch to hdmi 1 turn uhd colour on then turn off tv if it does not automatically also reboot console.
Thanks for the help
I'm already on HDMI1 with UHD Colour
I now rebooted everything
Next Port?
Thats kinda pricy...Oh I am so sorry bro some reason I thought Ju... No you have to buy this SEK 3500u(One Connect Box) This will give you new video processors, scalers Octa core cpu and 4 HDMI 2.0A ports.. I Have HU8700 and use same box u get HDR.. You can get here http://www.samsung.com/us/televisio...3500u-one-connect-evolution-kit-sek-3500u-za/
or
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V9Z6392/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Make sure to do a evolution kit back up b4 you install One connect box.
Thats kinda pricy...
My TV should have one HDMI 2.0 port, no?
No Hu7200 has no hdmi 2.0 ports. A new Tv cost much more than 399 to upgrade ur current set to HDR.. The option is there or you just have to get another Tv if you want 4k and HDR.
Wait.... You can get HDR on your TV by getting a new CPU or whatever those evo box are ???
That's amazing but... how does that work exactly ? What if your panels are 8 bit ? It's limited to some TVs I assume ?
The information i find on google contradict that though. No Hu7200 has no hdmi 2.0 ports. A new Tv cost much more than 399 to upgrade ur current set to HDR.. The option is there or you just have to get another Tv if you want 4k and HDR.
When I set output to 2160p 4:2:0 I get 2160p 4:2:0 12bit in all games regardless if they are HDR or not. When I set it to auto I get 2160p RGB in games and 2160p 4:2:2 8bit in HDR games. 2160p 4:2:2 8bit seems to be a strange choice for HDR so I will probably keep mine on 4:2:0 12bit in everything instead.
How are you determining the bit depth?
Yeh good question, I noticed that on rgb and auto setting the hdr games are 422. It did seem to me that forcing 420 was better.
I am not getting any banding with 422 or 420. I would give a very slight edge to the 422, unless that is just placebo effect.
Unrelated note:
During an HDR game, the PS4 ignores the setting of RGB range (limited/full) and outputs limited. You can validate this your self by forcing full on the TV. You will see the picture is washed out while in full and perfect in limited.
I don't think I get the banding either with 422. So I don't really know if it's better then 420 for me. It seems that 422 is kinda badish if I set colour space (tv) in 'native' instead of auto? I'm really no expert in this though.
I agree that on non RGB the ps4 setting limited/full does nothing. Actually it is the same for my TV setting. The 'hdmi black level' setting (used for limited/full) is not even available on my TV when it is on non RGB.

Try setting the color space to Rec 2020. That should be accurate for HDR games.
