The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

I've been thinking of getting into modding Skyrim for portfolio purposes, seems like a great tool for creating environments, model wise. So far I haven't actually loaded the CK but I've watched a lot of tutorials from the wiki. The videos are obviously old, from around 2012, has the engine been updated ever since in any noticeable fashion? I've noticed that all tutorials talk about panning the camera and rotating around objects in the scene, but are there really no WASD controls for the camera like in Unity and UE4, for instance?

So...I recently upgraded my PC and got a new HDD/SDD, so I really wanted to try playing Skyrim with mods again, since I had done that years ago based on a very precise guide in this thread posted in 2012. When Nexus Mod Manager updated, everything broke and I couldn't even figure out how to launch Skyrim anymore.

So, now that I have my PC set up again with a clean slate (and a much better graphics card and more RAM), I wanted to try to mod Skyrim again. so I found this beginner's guide and ended up spending the entire weekend setting it up. I followed this guide to a T. Now when I load Skyrim up, looking at or going near water causes the screen to flicker, my character swims in the air, and animals constantly levitate upwards and fall to their death. How on earth can I go back to vanilla? And is there anyway to avoid any of this time-consuming, ultra-technical bullshit? Like, what the fuck is up with the ENB, TES5Edit, WryeBash, LOOT...it didn't used to be so incredibly difficult. There are like a thousand places where things can go wrong. I just want to know what to click on to make everything awesome like it used to be in 2012.

Skyrim modding for beginners: install mods one by one.

Just reinstall the game if you're not sure what's causing the problems. Install one mod, run the game and see if it works. If it is, then proceed with the next one, and so on.

By reinstall, you just mean via Steam? Anything else I need to delete?

Yeah, everything. Restart from the scratch.

Well, turns out I didn't have to do that, lol. After reinstalling everything, figured out it was ENB that was the culprit. Messed around with the setting values for a little bit, but then just got rid of it. Guess I'm not messing around with that stuff until at least the enhanced edition comes out or something.

Enhanced Edition won't work with mods as they currently are though.

Maaaan...I really wanna like this Caranthir Tower Reborn mod, but holy shit it is super half cooked. Autosort's busted, the updates are busted, it fights with basic scripts...

This is a real shame.

So, how is this going to work with SE? Is there a new creation kit since it's 64bit now? Will mods be easily or automatically compatible? Mod managers okay? Enderal compatible? Haven't really followed much about SE but hearing 64bit, I got excited and assumed this will be a boon and reinvigoration of modding scene. Will this make Tamriel rebuilt easier?

People have been making mods, but I'm not sure if that means it's the old Creation Kit or they have access to the new one. All mods will need to get ported, I think, so right now that means no Enderal. I've seen screenshots of Skywind running in SE, so it's definitely possible though.

I'm assuming most mod managers will get updated to support it, as well.

Man, I hate waiting for mods to be ported/made.

Just need my Ordinator perks and the rebuilt towns and college and character creator options and I'll be set.

I gotta say, Nexus is great but it's so nice to just have the mods in an in game menu. Speaking of which, the Alternate start mod is really good!

What are the chances that a face editor mod could be ported to Xbox One? I thought my character's face looked good but now that I'm out in the open it looks really odd.

Not as of yesterday night. There's a beta version that detects the Special Edition and loads the appropriate mods, but it edits the load order for the regular Skyrim edition, messing it up.

Thanks. I'll have to manually sort for a bit in that case. Luckily there's only a few mods I'm using for SE atm.

Sooo I bought Skyrim Legendary in hopes of upgrading but was too slow. :p the issue in having is that every time I try to install mods using nexus mods manager I get an error. Something about the path is denied and the mod couldn't install. I've tried running NMM as administrator and I got nothing. Right now I'm backing up my mods and restoring NMM to see if that helps.

Any suggestions?

Mod Organizer instead of NMM

So for a person who knows really nothing about coding, is it even worth trying with mods or are there tutorials that can ease someone in?

For the denied path thing, you may have to run NMM as an adminstrator or get admin-level access to the directory folder for it to work.

But yeah MO is generally the less headache-inducing one, lol, particularly if you plan to have a lot of mods that may intersect. Heard they're gonna try and improve NMM's functionality though, so here's to that.

EDIT: NVM missed half of the post lol.

So is this still the main thread for modding Skyrim or has the SE edition thread taken over?

They coexist, for now it seems. I haven't checked in a while in the other thread but is Sky UI ported? I think that was the last straw for the majority of people and most mods to finally push SE to the mainstay.

SkyUI requires SKSE so I don't think it'll be out for awhile

I want to create a mod where do I start.

I'm currently messing around with the Skyrim creation kit. Whilst its kind of a mess organisation wise it seems pretty easy depending on what you want to do. You have to download it from the Bethesda launcher.

I've made a couple of mods already, I'm not really looking at tutorials, just looking at other peoples mods.

I'm doing a run through Skyrim and installed the following mods:

SkyUI, Unofficial bug fixes, Quality World Map, 2k Textures Pack and SMIM.

Are there any more recommended mods. FYI, I only have Skyrim vanilla (no dlcs).

It's that time of the year again! Time to play Skyrim once again and maybe finish it (for once). For, before all of that, it needs to be modded!
So, let's see, what do we have here:
  • (Manually installed: SKSE and Seasons of Skyrim ENB)
  • Unofficial Legendary Skyrim Patch
  • Unofficial High Resolution Patch
  • SkyUI
  • No bethesda intro
  • Wearable lanterns
  • Immersive weapons
  • Immersive armors
  • A Quality World Map and Soltsheim Map (Vivid, Stone roads)
  • Purity
  • True Storms
  • Lightning during Thunder Storms
  • Seasons of Skyrim ENB True HDR
  • Skyrim Flora Overhaul
  • Run For Your Lives
  • Better Sorting
  • Perkus Maximus
Meh, I don't have that much mods installed. Everything is probably going to work just fine. It isn't like my third or fourth time trying to install mods and make them work. I now know that I need to stay away from some mods in order to not have my save files corrupted (such as Birds and Flocks which is probably the culprit for one of my save becoming completely unusable, leading me to start again from scratch). I also found the solution to make the Patchus Maximus work from Mod Organizer. I won't get stuck and pull my hair out trying to nervously make everything "click", and I certainly won't lose hours or days on my life on this. It is going to be fine.

Joke aside, if you have advices, load order, recommended mods and other things to share with me, I am interested.

EDIT: OK, I got scared with Perkus Maximus. I'll try Ordinator and Apocalypse, less stress.

Might as well ask you guys about this. In short, what kind of mods are people generally looking for?

I'm asking because I want to make portfolio material and it'd be pretty cool to make my own dungeons, possibly weapons, and even quests (I could probably find unique voice actors very easily). But if that's something people aren't interested in, no one will download my stuff I guess. Of course, anyone can make a super powerful sword that kills everything in one hit. I have no interest in making such content, stuff need to at least try to be meaningful.

Hum, depends.

Speaking for myself, I look in priority for mods which make the game better to play, adding quality of life changes ("SkyUI" comes to mind, but also simple yet clever things such has "Unread Books Glow"). "Alternate Start" is pretty much mandatory, if only to save a lot of time when testing mods with a new, clean save. Then I look for mods which enhance graphics without denaturing the game (hence why I pick "Skyrim Flora Overhaul" and "Purity", and "Climates of Tamriel" before that). Then I look for mods which modify the gameplay, although I don't necessarily stick with them (heck, I dropped "Perkus Maximus" in 2min to try "Ordinator" instead, combined with "Apocalypse").

I tend to avoid installing mods that actually add content, since most of the time I fear that said content will be unbalanced* or will conflict with other mods or the original game itself, although once I finally complete the game I will definitely look into this kind of mods, as I like clever quests and original dungeons. I am interested by the "Interesting NPCs" mod which seems to be huge, but I'm wary of manual installations (I prefer to use Mod Organizer to keep my Skyrim folder clean).

* Says the guy who installed Apocalypse and Ordinator, mods which both add a lot of things which could be considered OP (well, I'm testing them, so...), so I'm aware I may sound a little hypocritical.

I have a rather different question...
Everyone is currently trying to port their mods from Skyrim to Skyrim SE...

But is there any way to port stuff from Skyrim SE to Skyrim, specifically converting a Skyrim SE mesh so it works in Skyrim?

So, I reach Winterhold. Suddenly, a guard jumps on me, declares that I commited crimes against Skyrim, and asks me for 1500 gold.
It took me a few minutes to realize it was because of the Alternate Start mod (see the Readme):

You will begin as a member of a group of bandits. For the sake of variety, the group of bandits will be chosen at random, from any properly configured bandit lair in either Tamriel or Solstheim. You will begin with standard bandit level equipment. The bandit faction at the start location will remain friendly to you as long as you don't piss them off first. Tread carefully though, you WILL have a bounty of 1500 gold in the hold the game chooses. The guards will not take kindly to seeing you trotting into a civilized area unless you're prepared to pay up.

Heh, can't get away with starting my life as a bandit. Should have seen that coming :p

Just curious, for anyone still subbed to this thread, how big are your modded save files?

After some general Googling I've seen a million threads asking this question, but I'd like to pose it to 'GAF.

I began with a save file of about 9 megs and after 20 hours I'm up to 15. Haven't made it a month yet though so I assume (hope) that when the cells reset I'll be a bit more lightweight.

Specifically, I've noticed an increase in save size since installing Dragonborn Gallery (which is understandable) but I'm curious when GAFfers have run into issues due to save file size.

If anyone still checks this thread, lemme know!

Is it possible to mod in new voices for enemies? Not new dialogue for quest lines per se, but the battle cries and death sounds etc.

I guess this thread is pretty dead :/

Is it possible to create non-hostile npcs that can be killed? I'm trying to make a quest where people want to get killed by the dragonborn.

I'd ask in the SSE mod thread. I know it's still early days for that game but there's probably more followers.

I wish I had an answer for you.
