Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

- The Musou (Dynasty Warriors) games are in my top 5 series and I don't care the shade thrown at them. It's relaxing mindless fun.

As a die-hard Musou fan, I am right there with you fam. The genre doesn't get nearly as much hate as it used to though and I think it has pretty much settled into "to each his own" territory concerning non-fans.

Story in video games are overrated. People focus too much on them.

The overwhelming majority of them are terrible. If they are done right they elevate SP games to masterpiece status.

Video game story telling just can't compete with what books and movies offer. The medium still has limitations at this point, besides it can never be pure storytelling. So in this way, it can be overrated. Overrated doesn't necessarily mean bad, just lacking, from an academic perspective.

I don't recall books giving us branching paths in stories.

FF XIII was a good game, with a top 5 story within the Final Fantasy games.

Yes, it had hallways, but so do all Final Fantasy games. It traded graphic fidelity for a smaller, more intimate world. If it were to come out this gen, with an more open world and the exposition it had hidden in it's codex it would be considered a masterpiece. The game takes place over 7 days, it isn't like they are going on a long drawn out journey to save the world like in prior games. Its the distilled Final Fantasy experience.

X-Men? Charles Xavier's team?
Okay well it stands for something but it isn't part of the word - the Ps in Pokemon and PlayStation are parts of the words.
Tits for tats. Xbox gets Xmen, Playstation gets Pokemon, Switch gets Scania: Truck Driving Simulator.
nah man tats for tats and tits for tits. Xbox gets Xmen and all X games. PlayStation & Switch get fucking nothing.
Unless I'm mistaken, the X in Xbox is actually originally from "DirectX." It was the "DirectXbox" originally, and then shortened at some point during development.

Now as for why they kept it Xbox instead of coming up with something else entirely? I dunno, probably decided it looked cool. :p
It is most definitely to make it sound cool. the DirectX thing was probably just a title in the works.

Once you play any Souls game, any other action game is a button mashing piece of shit. Yeah, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta too.

I think that's just the feeling of the enemies being less of a threat. SoulsBorne combat is my favorite as well, but its a shame that you dismiss the beautiful depth character action games like DMC and Bayonetta have in their combat.

People that say anything is a "button mashing" game just reveal how ass they are at those games.

if you cared at all about skill, you wouldn't be button mashing in the first place.

I dislike ATLUS USA's localisations for the very reason most people adore them - they rewrite the game's script for an American audience as opposed to trying to stick closer to the original script.

The Americanisation of the Yokai Watch franchise in the West is a far greater travesty of cultural erasure than the Fire Emblem Fates fiasco ever was.

Okami is the best Zelda game.

I don't mind the Xbox getting Xmen games since Marvel is generally garbage anyway, but no platform discrimination here. Nintendo can have Pokemon if PlayStation gets Project Zero instead.

Marvel hasn't been committed to games lately anyway, other than those Lego games.

But we got that Spiderman game coming (next year) could be the next Arkham. Who knows, you know.

Been forever since I played DMC4 but I played B1 and 2 within the last 2 years and no way can you button mash your way to victory. Anything above easy is impossible without using a little bit of strategy. Using witch time is huge, deciding whether to equip slow or quick weapons, can I afford to use kicks instead of punches on these enemies, should I juggle this one in the air? Bayonetta has many options, but a mindless masher wouldn't have a good time here unless they dropped the difficulty to minimum.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone enjoys Grand Theft Auto games. I thought I could get into the newest one GTA V, because the setting was in my home state, but I dropped it after maybe 3-4 hours. The game play is just so boring. And then people always say, "Just turn on cheets, and go crazy". Well where the hell is the fun in that? Games on easy mode arn't fun because there's no challenge, no game to it. I don't get it.

I have come to loathe the effect the "souls" games have had on gaming.

Don't get me wrong, I love them/. In my own hipster way I was there first thanks to f13 - I imported the Asian region version of Demon Souls well before it became popular over here, and have been loving them for years.

But the utterly ridiculous, obsessive nature of their fanboys just grates so much. Dark Souls has the best combat! Dark Souls is the best RPG! Every game should be like Dark Souls!

NO!

The souls games are brilliant, but they are their own thing. they could be better in some areas, and other games should learn from them where appropriate. but this rabid idea that they are literally the holy grail of gaming, and everything else is inferior, just needs to stop. It's stupid and unhelpful, and also blatantly false (best combat system my ass).

I'm talking about Marvel in general. Even as a kid I thought super hero stuff was mostly dumb shit.

The emphasis on jumping to 4K on the new PS4 pro/Scorpio consoles seems premature, and come off more as a marketing gimmick to sell new consoles to "technogeeks".

Don't know if this is controversial, but:

The arcade sports genre is the best genre that gets the worst representation. Outside of Nintendo's first-party teams and a few indie devs, there are not enough of these. They also seem like they are the type of game that can be developed more cheaply than other types of games, filling a mid-budget-tier niche quite nicely.

The beauty of arcade sports are in mastering the physics of a game without needing to know a ton about it. Sim sports fans like sports games and will play it, especially if there is technique to master. Non-sim sports fans will play it if it's simple to get into and stick with it to master the technique.

Rocket League is proof that good arcade sports games have wide audiences. It's really a shame that there aren't more of these. Watch HSG come out on PS4 and quietly sell millions of copies and be a bit of a long-runner. More of these, please.

Perception seemed to kill the arcade sports games. Especially licensed ones. That and politics.

Perception- these games aren't retail worthy, should be 15 bucks.

In the past you could sell those full price. Hitz, Blitz, Jam, Hang Time, Sluggerz (I think that was the name). Now that isn't possible. They are seen as lesser games. Shame, I put in more time unlocking every thing in Hitz 2002 more than I ever played NHL 2002. Licenses are expensive. Is it that worth it to make these games on the cheap? Companies think not I guess.

Politics- Concussions, CTE, protecting brand.

It sucks but the leagues are extra sensitive to the portrayal of their leagues. This killed the last NFL Blitz game. I think it's a joke as we know it's fiction. It's a game. It's not real life. Let me powerbomb a player after the play. Let me body check my opponent in the face as his head breaks the glass. It's a game. Not reality. Everybody gets that. But too bad. No Fun League and all that goes for the others. Sad that it's basically a "we must protect ourselves from lawsuits" thing as that's really hard to argue against if you are defending the respective league you run.

But yo, Hot Shots Golf is going to be a quiet big hit? Well I hope it does that for you but I say good luck. Super happy for Rocket League and I too wish for arcade sports games to return to glory. I just don't think the timing is right.

I said basically the same thing in a different thread, but the PS4Pro exists so Sony can try and sell new TVs, and the Scorpio exists because MS are terrified of being left (further) behind in a PR war about specs most people don't understand.

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
Over a year later, and I still feel that Xenoblade X's music is fantastic.

I honestly find most of Treasure's games, apart from Wario World, to be really unpolished, way over the top and just a mess in general (actually this also applies to Wario World too). I think I'm pretty wrong on this and I'd love to be proved WRONG, but as it stands... I can't stand them! I think Alien Soldier might be the worst offender for me

T-That's controversial...? I mean, I definitely like the soundtrack from the original better, but geez... that doesn't automatically make X's bad. I think it's really good too!

Saw that rumoured Switch launch lineup list (http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1317804) and that's a pitiful list if you aren't a Nintendo fan. Nintendo better have some more third party support than a Skyrim port and a semi-reboot of BG&E to make the Switch appealing to people who aren"t Nintendo loyalists.

Just saw the list too. It's the exact type of games that didn't get people to buy WiiU. Why would this be any different?
Full 3rd party support is important for the switch to be a main console for most people.

I'm pretty sure the reason the Wii U didn't sell wasn't because of it's line-up. Lack of third party support? Yeah, probably, but the amount of people that wanted to play these games but didn't want to fork the price for the hardware wasn't small.

FFXIII doesn't take place over 7 days. Are you sure you're not thinking of FFXIII3 and its 13/14 days?

I did read it and I hope there is much more to it. The controversial part of my post is contrary to that thread I don't think the known/rumored list is that exciting.

Do people forget the games droughts that happened for 2 out of the WiiU 4 years?
Most people outside of the gaming enthusiast want to buy one console only that have a lot of games. Games like GTA, COD, and battlefield.

Didn't notice that, but it doesn't mean much anyway. Could be more third party games, could be more second party games or it could be more of the kind of first party games that didn't manage to excite anyone but the existing Nintendo fanbase on the Wii U.

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike > Street Fighter Alpha 3.

I think that, retrospectively, this is the consensus on GAF

KOFXIV is the perfect example of why graphics matters, no matter the genre: the more I watch it, the shittier it looks. Really puts me off. This concern even some designs.

I'm sorry, KOF fans.

The story/narrative/writing were vknvoites and bland and the characters were almost all terrible (I like Light for the most part, but the rest of the cast were truly forgettable).

Even if you opened up the gameplay these things would have prevented the term masterpiece.

Titanfall 2 campaign is no more than good.

Story wise? It's less than good.

Gameplay wise it's one of the best FPS campaigns since the glory days of HL2 and Halo: CE.

Overwatch while a great game this year hardly deserves many game awards other than maybe best multiplayer. I say this cause while it's a fun game it does have its flaws and overtime due to patches and buffs they seem to have a not very good concept of balance. Especially when some characters the best counter is that character.

I also say this because in terms of games this year has been amazing and to even think that overwatch has any chance of getting game of the year is absurd and If it does that the players will be the downfall of the gaming industry.

I think the overwhelming cynicism and defacto negativity of online forums and discussion is turning me off. I mean to the point where I find myself doing it more and more.

I don't think we should blindly be positive or embrace hype culture, but... there is a trend of growing amount of threads of "is X the worst!" or "what is the worst..." etc. Eh... I am leaning now towards from small and personal online communities where I know people offline. It just seems like there is more discussion and it raises my excitement for things.
