I'm not one to get nitpicky over translation, especially when the writers are adding flair. But man, "wassap" is a relic from the 90's.

You guys are actually coo-coo for cocopuffs if you think an incredibly bland line like "This is my Persona" is better than what the English version has.

Like I said, I don't mind added flair. P4 is chock-full of it and it definitely worked in most places (See: Kanji). "Wassap", though? C'mon man.

(note: I still really don't care)

Changing things is fine. Having him speak like Poochie is another thing entirely.

We're talking about a guy who makes this incredibly dumb ass grin after awakening to his Persona

Having him say cringey shit like that is right up his alley

I think "Wassup Persona" is awful. The guy is in awe at his new power, the new line doesn't even convey the that; it just makes him sound like a cocky asshole, when in actuality the guy is pretty humble. Ryuji may be a "cool kid" but he's not lame enough to use words like "wassup".

His shirt says "ZOMG".

That's a case of Engrish though, plenty of people in Japan wear shirts with stupid as fuck "English" phrases on them, without their personalities actually matching them.
That doesn't change the fact the translation is giving a completely different vibe to the original line, and sounds out of character and awkward as hell.

gotta go after the 4th VIP now. Hopefully I'm done with those puzzle rooms for this one

FUCKING TOLD YOU.

"This is my Persona"

A lot of the localisation seems janky. I still haven't recovered from fists of justice.

His shirt says "ZOMG".

There is a zero percent chance that Soejima wrote that on his shirt to be ironic.

I'm still of a hollistic frame of mind. Judging a localisation based on VA trailers is certainly valid, but I'm not ready to throw shade on the whole lot just yet.

The Sakamoto thing is really bad tho

Like, April is so far away for me now that I'm working full time...

This isn't based on the trailers, it's from the stream, where we saw a good segment of the game. Taking lines from a trailer out of context is one thing, but here we saw cutscenes back to back.
With that said, I actually think the localization looks fine for the most part. I just really don't like the "Wassup Persona" line. With their explanation for the delay literally being to re-re-examine the localization, I'm not too worried.
My biggest fear for the localization beyond the shitty name pronunciation (which is easily fixed) is how god-awful almost every aspect of the UI looks. The "Days until Expulsion" notifier in the top right looked like it was done in MS Paint.

Just look at this shit. They even made the text boxes for objectives wider, taking up even more screen space just because their font is so damn wide.

The enemy "names" in battle also look hideous too. Hire some graphic designers Atlus USA!

Yeah I can't believe that dungeon. After a string of at least decent dungeon puzzles they decide to double down on stealth and backtracking for that one? It's bizarre.

I think they were assuming there was no chance the Japanese voices were not going to be included, then somehow the voices were approved and as a result they have to re-rewrite some lines.

Which is fine if in the end that "Wassup Persona" disappears.

No , wassus up , doesn't work

Doesn't work

It just doesn't work. It's not just about the character , but given the context of his awekening , i can't help but think that it doesn't work.

He's discovering a new power , not welcoming a friend in the morning

"Right on...Wassup, Persona...this effin rocks!" does plenty to convey his awe at his new power in a way that's natural to the character. Or at least the localized version, considering his previous dialogue.

"This is my persona" is literally google translate tier.

YMMV, but the translation seems fucking stellar so far. Wassup Persona is literally the only questionable line and it's questionable that it's questionable. Ya feel me?

Come on, he says exactly "This is my Persona" in Japanese. Not every line needs to pop with "flavor", and adding "flavor" where it wasn't initially is just less accurate. You can call it google translate-tier if you like, but it does a far better job at conveying the same message as the original line than "wassup persona" does, not to mention it sounds far less forced and unnatural than "wassup".

The new line sounds straight up bad, is nothing like the original line and it's not a change for the sake of paraphrasing to fit the lines in sync with the animation, since his original line would fit perfectly. It's just a change for the sake of a change, and it just adds cringe that didn't need to be there and is bound to take plenty of people out of the moment. It's poor translation and the "google translate" tier line is far more accurate, more befitting of his character, and more faithful to the original script.

Like I said, I'm generally pretty happy with the localization thus far, but it can be a good localization and still have problems, and given the game is still 5 months off, now would be the time to start pointing out those flaws, since there's actually a chance they'll fix them.

That's what he says though, and it's the voice actor who conveyed the right feeling to this line, and then Atlus USA just changed what he says and now they have to delay the game to make a better translation of this and probably several lines as well. That's what they meant when the said they had to go back to make sure the quality of the translation was on par with the bar set by the Japanese cast.

I have this feeling that Atlus Japan themselves intervened and told Atlus USA to give the localisation another pass through in part because they didn't want another situation like what happened with SMTIV: Apocalypse/Final. The other part clearly being a business move because February got fucking stacked and Atlus wants their game to sell more in the West after how well it did in its native country.

What is the conventional opinion about the Persona 3 and 4 localisations?

pretty good. voicework not for everyone especially as they continued to replace voice actors as the spin-offs go on, but the script and dialogue is generally agreed on as some of the better stuff around.

I'm about 14 hours in so far, but as soon as the game allows you to check the phantom network I'm always underleveled by about two levels when compared to the players'average, yet I consistently tried to grind and fight every enemy from the start. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I'd honestly just advise ignoring it. I'm pretty sure it includes the levels of people playing on Safety and people on NG+ which will bump the average up much higher than it should be. With the way the dungeons and the game is structured it's borderline impossible to be underleveled.

For some reason some guides I was using to just answer things like stupid test questions got removed.......*sigh* I can deal with not a guide for the text but I can't remember most of these questions days later.

congrats dude.

Congrats . Gonna go for NG+ ?

Thanks. I'll try. Will try to put up an impression in the spoiler thread soon. I don't read too much into things so it wouldn't be very in-depth.

If you're connected online, just press the touchpad.

Just don't look at the navigation bar at the left if you don't want to know the names of the targets.

Yeah ended up just going to that wiki, had a previous one that was easier to navigate though but guess I'll just keep using this one.

If you just press the touchpad button when you get asked a question in class it shows you the percentage of people who picked each option.
You don't need to read Japanese, just pick the same option that the majority of people picked.

Can't you just go to PS Home screen during the cutscene, and put the console in Rest Mode and continue the next day?

I could but there are times on my street where the power will just randomly go out.....and I haven't had the chance to save for a few hrs because of how long these cutscenes are.

I predict Persona 5 will get 20 points deducted for the bad font when it gets released in the west. Metacritic of 68 inc.
Should have used comic sans :-x
