I mean some people are stumping for bigger playoffs. Imagine how you'll feel when a 3 loss third or fourth place team gets hot and runs the table. It'll be like watching any other sport's playoffs where the best team generally doesn't win.

CDY.. your thoughts on this? Does this entertain you a bit?

Not really. Feel a little bad for him because he seems like a decent dude, and the AD kinda botched this and left him dangling in the wind to take questions from the media about his job security, but he's getting a monster buyout so I don't feel too bad.

Unless Oregon hires a Saban/Meyer/Harbaugh/Petersen-caliber guy :)jnc yeah right, they don't grow on trees and Oregon would be pretty far down the list) I'm not too worried since we have Petersen. Doesn't mean whoever they hire can't have success there, but Petersen has this thing rolling now and is one of the elite coaches in college football.

Bullshit that the Hawks did not make the top 25 after that annihilation. At least Nebraska dropped out completely.

Also, the committee would never do it but it would be amazing if Washington and Clemson both lost in their title games and we ended up with three Big 10 teams in the playoff.

Guess there are some positives about having this week off..

Two years from championship game to fired is rough.

I think they might be in for some disappointment. They're going to want to shoot for the moon and make a splash hire, but there aren't really many guys available out there that would qualify.

Plus if they think they're going to go back to the days where they only have to beat Stanford to win the conference, they're mistaken.

If I'm Oregon I would be very happy with a guy that wins 7-10 every season and truly contends for a conference title every 3-4 years.

I feel like Oregon is the Baylor of the northwest. Always pretty bad or at least unremarkable but with recent success and with recent shiny uniforms.

Minus the known rape and murder, though.

Helfrich was such a bad hire at the time too. Should have ponied up for Petersen

Not only Browning, Wilson, Dobbins, maybe Okudah

But he might get all of them should he decide to go to Ohio State..

Okudah was never gonna come to Texas he's OSU all the way, same with Dobbins really unless OSU got that other RB. Browning and Wilson would have defintely came even if Charlie kept his job after the season. He's just that good of a crooter.

that's Baylor spin, considering their second choice is Sonny Dykes. SMU is paying Morris $3M a year.

Nobody wants that job.

Dykes would also be dumb to take that job, considering he can just wait a year to take the Tech job

Brian Kelly to Oregon?

Oregon is an interesting job. Not the kind of history you'd associate with a top tier program, but they've got tons of resources and money, and a pretty good recruiting pipeline into California. Who's available though?

I cannot see the committee putting in a team that lost 2 of its last 3 over a 2-loss B1G Conference champion. Sorry Michigan fans - you need utter chaos to snag that fourth slot

I wouldn't call needing one of Washington or Clemson losing utter chaos. Hell, utter chaos might be the only way a B1G Champion gets in.

You've got the Playoff Committee head talking about how the margin between Washington and Michigan is razor thin.

Assuming there are only 2 weeks left before the bowls start(and the last week only has 1 game), that means there's only 19 points left to gain(12 w14 games + bonus w14 3 + 1 w15 game + bonus w15 3). These are the remaining 12 that could still potentially win/tie.

Oregon needs Fleck.

+Fresh
+Recruits like mad
+Can coach

He's a program-changer and he showed it at WMU. He took a zero and made it a hero through his will. He is the perfect fit and they had better get him and show him patience.

You were too good for this world Mark Helfrich.

My only question about Fleck going to Oregon would be recruiting. He would most likely do better at a midwest school since that's where his recruiting ties are. But I dunno, maybe at a program like Oregon that doesn't make too much of a difference. Attractive program right now and there are plenty of recruits to pull out of CA.

He can just hire assistants with west coast ties.

They were a solid 8-10 win program under Bellotti before he brought in Chip, then Chip shows up and catches a lot of people off guard with the up temp stuff, Phil Knight also steps in and they improve the facilities faster than UW/USC/Stanford etc, the uniforms, increased recruiting, Nick Aliotti and the peak of their defensive prowess, and then it all kinda fell apart.

Where they go from here is hard to say.

After watching the ESPN interview yesterday with the Selection Committee Chair, it seems like they give 2 shits about the winner of Penn State vs Wisconsin in the BIG10 Championship.

"We are picking the best top 4 teams in college football right now"

"The margin between Washington and Michigan is very very small"

Per his words Bama and Ohio State are a lock. Clemson loss and/or Washington loss and Michigan gets in.

The problem with this line is what does that even mean? Like should USC go in ahead of UDub? What about next week when OSU isn't even playing so there isnt a right now? It was a back then.

Oregon sure threw Helfrich under the bus during their press release. It's not wrong, but I don't remember most programs putting in this level of detail.

I'm at work but if someone can find that interview that would be great. Because the ESPN lead analyst was hounding the Selection Committee Chair about how they value conference champs and his answer was what you bolded in my post. That's why I took the interview as the Selection Committee really doesn't care about the BIG10 Championship.

If they're picking the 4 best teams NOW, then I don't understand why their top 4 isn't tOSU, UW, Clemson and USC. No other teams have either (1) played the same quality of opponents and (2) performed as well NOW, than those 4 teams.

If conference championships don't matter, then they should announce the final 4 this week rather than next.

I take it that they don't care about it until it happens.

In fact I am of the mind now that the Committee doesn't care about anything that could happen in the future. They are merely reflecting their thoughts of what occurred up to that day.

They've all but said this in every interview. This gives them the nebulous ability to change their minds at any moment. It is kind of flaky but I get it. They aren't making this weeks rankings to influence next weeks. In fact if PSU drubs Wiscy or vice versa there is no reason they can't jump UM and thats what they are saying.

On top of that they allow themselves the ability to reset the board.

It's us, fans and pundits and analysts, that refuse to buy this or understand it. Each weekly poll is independent of the last. Thats why the rankings get so screwy in our heads etc. it actually seems extra arbitrary.

Once we get to the point that we can recognize that yesterday's poll has little to no bearing on the final poll we'll be happy. All the weekly ranking do is give us an idea of the opinions of the committee at that specific time.

I get this line of thinking.

It doesn't account for the idea of them explicitly saying they are taking the BEST 4 teams right NOW.

If that's the case USC should be in as I'd argue they are playing the BEST of anyone right NOW.

Again those were the committee's words not mine.

Put me on mre's side of this debate.

Bama & OSU are locks, even if Bama loses.
Clemson & UW win and in.
One of them loses and Michigan gets in.
Both lose and the B10 Champ gets in.

He's not wrong though. USC is seemingly back to where they were and Washington is a contender as well. Oregon's main competition is no longer Stanford.

Oregon should try to get Chip Kelly back right now. He's going to get fired soon anyway.
