New Yooka-Laylee PS4 Gameplay

Thanks for posting this. In the main YL thread, some new previews were posted:

Preview from Ars Technica.
Preview from Game Revolution.

Based off of PSX builds.

And my reply from that thread:

Thanks for these. I wonder how soon we get a release date, especially if it's still coming Q1 2017.

Edit: oh this is good to know

Playtonic insists that many of the issues I saw are the result of the build being “four months old.” But even if most of those somehow go unfixed in the final, retail game, the demo's laugh-inducing fun should still inspire confidence for anyone who pledged to the Kickstarter so long ago.

Edit 2: oh and this too

The people at Playtonic say to expect a firm release date announcement in “a few weeks,” which they hope will be somewhere in the “early 2017” range.

Edit 3: those first two edits were from the Ars Technica article. This is from Game Revolution:

But it’s not going to light anyone’s world on fire -- if you’re looking for an honest challenge, you will be sorely disappointed.

And, hrm

I would feel a lot better about collecting every piece of garbage if the game controlled just a little bit better. You play as the duo of Yooka and Laylee, in a setup that will sound familiar to anyone who’s played Banjo-Kazooie. In fact, it will sound very familiar, because movement and camera controls are mapped to the left stick like this is a N64 game. You can still control the game with the right stick, but turning Yooka and Laylee with the left stick also turns the camera. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s definitely not the way I’ve been conditioned to play 3D platformers.

Once you come to terms with the movement, Yooka-Laylee is fairly enjoyable! It’s not as tight as some platformers, but it’s not too imprecise. There’s always a well-defined path to your objective, and getting there isn’t difficult. Once you know what you’re doing, it takes very little effort to execute a plan. That ties into the attainability of the collectibles -- if you feel like you can actually earn that coveted 100%, you’ll likely have more fun.

I would imagine the game gets harder as it goes on. Troubling about the controls though. What did people find when playing the Toybox, similar issues at all?

Really shaping up, this is miles ahead of the early stuff they showed. I mean, obviously that is the way that game development is supposed to work, but with backer-funded projects, sometimes they don't always reach the benchmarks they set for themselves.

Are they still keeping enemies and such hidden? I remember some other users saying that when I commented on how empty it looks. And it still looks empty.

in my veins!

When is the release date?

Spring, though I remember somewhere saying possibly February?

See the bold text in my post (#5) above. I think last form info we heard was Q1 2017.

Any word on whether a Switch version is in development? Would love to change my Kickstarter reward.

No word yet.

In September I believe they denied working on a Switch port at that time, but here's hoping.

Here's hoping Playtonic doesn't get cold feet and move the Wii U version to the Switch like seemingly everyone else is doing.

Thanks man, I imagine we'll get a reveal during an indie reel at the Switch event.

I sure hope so, but given the comment they made in September, I'm trying not to be too disappointed if they just have their hands full for now.

Thanks! Yeah, maybe it was someone random that mentioned February around EGX time.

NP! February would be great. It would give time to play it before Switch!

Valentine's would be my hope, since Persona stole our heart into April, haha.

This is polishing up wonderfully. Really can't wait for this, so glad that I backed it on Kickstarter.

If it's any consolation, I think that's exceptionally unlikely given the KS campaign significantly including the Wii U version as well as the fact that the only version Playtonic has been developing themselves is the Wii U one.

I hope a Switch port is at or near launch. Having both a Rare-style and Nintendo-style 3D platformer at launch would be magical.

Depends on what you mean by near launch. If we're to believe them that they weren't working on it in September of this year, it seems potentially less likely to be at launch, though I'd be thrilled to be wrong.

Man I'm SO pumped for this game. Every time I see it just looks so good. It's one of those rare kickstarters that I really wish I'd thrown my support behind early on, but I'm so pleased to see that it's turned out well either way!

I'm probably alone with this but I think it does not look that good in terms of graphics. It has that typical cheap Unity look with all it's flaws.

Boy that is some sparse level design.

It's visually pleasing, but there's not much interactivity. It's way too flat and open without enough verticality.

I can see the frame pacing issues from this video already... this sucks. But the game looks very good!

Games are frequently a bit framey early on. For something like a 3D platformer I'd happily take a locked 30; as long as it's solid I'll be happy, be it 30 or 60.

Once you open up more parts of the world it looks to be more vertical. There was verticality to the EGX demo, I believe. Plus it was mentioned that the level was at 50% content complete/included, so that's why it looks a little sparse at the moment.

I'm not sure if the same holds true for this ~4 month old build, but regarding previous demo builds, I believe Playtonic said they purposely removed elements/enemies from the environment for the demo.

Best looking Unity game I've seen, absolutely brilliant looking game. Hope Unity's performance issues don't creep in and destroy it's chances....

I love that this, Sonic Mania and Shemue 3 (games designed to look and feel like new entries to sorts of games we haven't seen in a long time) are being made

I think it might be possible that they've been working on a port since last E3. They gave kits out to quite a few indies and we're now seeing some of the higher profile stuff moving over or being included in dev plans. Whether it's Playtonic or Team 17 or someone else is anyone's guess. They'd be leaving money on the table if they didn't. People are always game hungry at launch.

I had asked the Hive Jump guys about a Switch port, by saying 4-player with everyone having separate screens would be awesome and was basically given, "WOULDN'T IT THOUGH?! ;) ;)" as a response.
