Nintendo files multiple Nintendo Switch patents (controller, dock, architecture*)

VR with a 720p screen that big doesn't sound so great, though I guess if they're doing it Cardboard/Gear VR style the images displayed don't have to fill the entire 6 inches. VR Nintendo games would be hype no matter what.

Looking forward to a summary of all the new info from someone more willing and able to decipher all that Patent mumbo jumbo.

The patent tells about a temperature sensor and a magnetic force sensor. Could be a reference to a possible sensor bar under the bezel of the screen?

I forgot to look for that. The assumption was that there might be a sensor bar at the top of the bezel that sticks out above the dock.

Anything about a camera?

The individual joycons having L and R buttons is freakin' cool. I get that they're not ideal controllers, but the fact that they have them makes them functional for a lot of games.

yeah, this is a nice surprise

so basically each side is a whole SNES + analong controler

Touch "confirmed" and no stylus...
Maybe they will sell one as an accessory (althou since this is basically a tablet, I can see a stylus similar to apple's)

Not VR, but something like a cinematic mode maybe

Also, confirmed that the dock allows the switch table to display higher resolution

I don't think the quality will be that important, this will be an accessible and cheap form of VR, would be cool to have a few little VR eshop games.

Lol, is this the return of the Vitality Sensor?
This would be weird. They dropped the idea, since it would not work on some people ... Maybe they got more precised software this time. The idea itself would great, since you could read the emotion of the player and change the game accordingly. The player doesn't sweat against a boss, maybe we need to make him harder. The player is tensed, time for a jump scare.

Well lets see, if the actually will use it ...

I like the idea of the right joycon being held like a joystick.
Wonder if that means you're supposed to held it like a torchlight (rising your hand near your shoulder) to use the IR pointer.

I guess they'll use capactive touchscreen this time instead of resistive

Calling it already. Switch PRO with VR ready screen and internals in 2018! Inside out tracking and new "touch" Joy-cons too! 399€!

Yeah, if Nintendo is actually doing VR they're going to be going the "Gear VR of consoles" route instead of trying to compete with PSVR.

Anything about using Wii Remotes as additional controllers as mentioned in the original Eurogamer report from half a year ago? I hope they stick to Joy-Con controllers, which are more capable and would raise the bar that developers target for. Though including two in the box already should mean any 2 player game won't bother supporting Wii Remotes.

Would play Super Metroid with this.

The d-pad on the 3DS is so uncomfortably positioned, it's nice to have an option for a d-pad in the primary position for once.

Yeah this is my most anticipated take from this, different joycons! Was worried about playing local 2D games with an analog stick.

It's worth repeating that patent applications contain a lot of embodiments which will not necessarily become products. Meaning, the VR HMD might not ever come to be, gyro in the joycons and tablet might not happen, etc. Don't take every feature listed as a guarantee for what will be in the final product.

Someone needs to summarise the stuff of internet or new information, because that is a lot to scroll through / digest, even on a vertical monitor!

Has anyone wrongly assumed a split screen Zelda?

Do the Joy Con triggers seem analog or digital?

Which ones? If the triggers on the back during normal two-Joy Con play, yeah those are analog. If the ones on the top during one Joy-Con play then they're likely just digital L and R buttons like the SNES.

Yeah this needs to be taken the same way we would take a rumor, it's cool to speculate though!

Splatoon Switch saved!

This. I was seriously concerned that they'd be offering Splatoon again but without gyro. Nope. I need that for the game. It's amazing for the Wii U game and don't want to lose that. Same with pointer control for shooters. I put so many hours into the various Call of Duty games because of the pointer controls since they're the closest you can get to mouse and keyboard.

Now just need to know if there is analog triggers for racing games. Need for Speed Most Wanted U is almost impossible to play at times unless you really learn the controls with no way control how fast you accelerate or brake. It's either all or nothing because of the choice they made with the Wii U's buttons and triggers.

In the present embodiment, in the portable mode, the clock frequency range over which the CPU 81 is allowed to operate is limited. In the present embodiment, the clock frequency at which the CPU 81 is allowed to operate can be specified within a predetermined range by the program executed on the main unit 2. In the portable mode, the range over which a clock frequency can be specified by the program is limited as compared with that in the console mode. For example, the range over which a clock frequency can be specified in the console mode is X1 [Hz] or less, whereas it is limited to X2 (<X1) [Hz] in the portable mode. Note that if the main unit 2 includes a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in addition to a CPU, the range of processing power (i.e., clock frequency) may be limited for the CPU and/or for the GPU.

Portable mode downclock confirmed.

In the present embodiment, in the portable mode, the image rendering capacity (which can also be referred to as the image generating capacity) is limited. Specifically, in the portable mode, the resolution (in other words, the number of pixels) of images generated by the main unit 2 is lower than that in the console mode.

And different resolutions.

I thought about including a disclaimer, I've done so in previous patent threads, but such seems to be ignored anyway mostly so I skipped it.

This is awesome. Touch screen confirmed, gyro controls confirmed, VR headset... maybe? I seriously hope that the VR headset is for a Virtual Boy emulator. That would be amazing.

I guess with IR and Gyro confirmed we'll see Skyward Sword HD on Switch, don't we? *looks at Dolphin screenshots...starts to drool*

it's funny, Nintendo found a way for me to spend money on extra plastic accessories and be kind of ecstatic about it. offering different control options via the changeable joy cons is great. I hope they're priced right but I'm in the door for at least a set with dual analogs and a proper dpad and another with the dpad positioned on top.

I see a D-Pad on one of those drawings! I'm cautiously optimistic we'll be able to purchase a d-pad housing L-JoyCon.

This is a HUGE piece of the puzzle.

One question still remains: how much will they cost? 15€ for each part would be great. I would Take the SNES and a GameCube One.

They missed out on not doing Virtual Boy VC on 3DS. I hope it's time for redemption.

Sleep mode confirmed

[0562] Note that the operation mode (the portable mode and the console mode) is of a different level from the ON mode and the sleep mode. That is, the main unit 2 may be either in the ON mode or in the sleep mode when the operation mode is the portable mode. Or, the main unit 2 may be either in the ON mode or in the sleep mode when the operation mode is the console mode.
