5 | A Tribe Called Quest | We got it from Here... Thank You 4 service

This album came out at the perfect time. It feels like Tribe modernized, but not too much. Hits especially hard with Phife gone. Feels like an album we didn't deserve, but got anyways.

amen to all that, especially the bolded

Posting now. Will edit it later.

So, this year was interesting...

1 | David Bowie | Blackstar

400x400-000000-100-1-1.jpg

After reconsidering everything about my Top 10 albums of the year, this is my top pick, it's just a smart and dark album and the best sendoff that Bowie could have, he knew about his incoming death, he made an album with that theme, he dropped hints to everyone, and no one noticed and now that he died we realized "this is a great album".

Kudos to Bowie for this one, he may rest in peace.

2 | Kanye West | The Life of Pablo

kanye-west-the-life-of-pablo.jpg

This is my second most listened album of 2016, no joke, it's catchy, it's a mess, but only a crazy genius like Kanye could have released this with DLC included, yes, he talks mad shit sometimes, but this album with the exception of 2 skippables is amazing. Just, gonna listen to this album again.

3 | Metallica | Hardwired... To Self Destruct

metallica-hardwired-to-self.jpg

Gotta admit, they stepped up, after a sad mixing on Death Magnetic and that piece of crap called Lulu. Metallica is back!, they finally made an album worth listening from beginning to end. ManUNkind, Hardwired, Atlas Rise, Now that we're dead, are standouts, like serious hits standouts.

I can't wait to see them live because of this album, it feels like everything is done right and I enjoyed this.

4 | KANA-BOON | Origin

Cover.jpg

This is the second time I put this band on the same spot as last year, they consistently put songs that I like, I just grab them, put them on repeat and sing along with them in basic Japanese, the structure, the vibes, all feels great with this band, and thank god Naruto for showing me this band.

5 | Frank Ocean | Blonde

frank-blond.jpg

Not as strong as his past album but still a great album that deserves top 5 status, everything flows on this man, it has great songs and good vibes. Not saying too much because I would go a lot more.

6 | Sum 41 | 13 Voices

1sum.jpg

They came back and with their best album since 'Chuck'. After Darryck's almost tragedy he had with Alcohol he found a way to do a comeback stronger than ever and brought back Dave Baksh, the guitarist who was the sound of Sum until Chuck, and everything went so well that the album sounds cohesive.

7 | BURNOUT SYNDROMES | Lemon (檸檬)

t333283360_s400.jpg

Surprise pick, I really liked Hikariare and Fly High! from the anime series Haikyuu!!! but the entire album is well made, it's adrenaline inducing you want to run, jump, do whatever, it's a great album.

8 | TK from Ling Tosite Sigure | White Noise

AICL-3174-1-400x400.jpg

I'm a 'Sigure' fan, ever since 'Telecastic Fake Show', this album is TK in all his glory doing songs with full creative freedom all alone. I'm still waiting for the new Sigure album anyway.

9 | Avenged Sevenfold | The Stage

14890009_10153821362360583_7022637027244672603_o-400x400.jpg

Very unexpected album, I didn't expected that this popped out of nowhere and it has an amazing sound, by far the best A7X album ever.

10 | The Weeknd | Starboy

The-Weeknd-feat.-Daft-Punk-Starboy-400x400.jpeg

Look what you've done people, it has one of the catchiest songs of 2016, it's one of the most anticipated albums of the year and turned out to be... Great.

11 | Jimmy Eat World | Integrity Blues

1507-1.jpg

12 | Chance The Rapper | Coloring Book

CHANCE-THE-RAPPER-COLORING-BOOK-2-_1.jpg

And Chance does another well made album, what a surprise, after Acidrap I thought that it was a one off but he grabbed this and made it just as good as Acidrap. Good Job Chance!

13 | Marshmello | Joytime

600x600bb.jpg

Before 'Alone' and 'Ritual' appeared, Marshmello did the best trap album of 2016, it's amazing, the sound mixes from beginning to end, it has a big party vibe where you can just put it everywhere and it's on. 'Keep it Mello' and 'Know me' as standout tracks and very good ones nonetheless.

14 | Twenty One Pilots x Mutemath | The Mutemath Sessions

fWtf7oi.jpg

Late pick, the EP just released a few days ago, and they remade each song so well it deserved to be listened over and over again, enjoyable and good.

15 | Radiohead | A Moon Shaped Pool

489121-MLV20706703760_052016-C.jpg

16 | Babymetal | Metal Resistance

17 | Kero Kero Bonito | Bonito Generation

kerob_jra9j0.jpg

18 | Green Day | Revolution Radio

Continuing in a couple days adding more explanations. I will get through a lot of albums.

This year's music output for me was a bit sparse. I liked Iggy Pop's album but it didn't stick with me. The second place is an album of a progressive/noise band from Germany. There's nothing like it.

On the other hand 2016 saw both the last masterpiece and the passing of David Bowie, though. Nothing this and last decade comes close to the impact of that. Rest in peace, Mr. Bowie! He was my first and biggest musical idol and I will never forget how much this guy's music changed my life. :) Blackstar was personal even before he died because he finally explored the more experimental and dark corners of his creativity again.

The truth of it is... I could list any of these albums as my number 1 but since I have to rate them that's what I'll go with. What a year for new music. I could make a top 30 easily. There were so many releases it's insane and almost overwhelming.

I gotta say 2016 has been my favorite year of new music in a long while, if not the best year in my lifetime.

It's from last year, but you should check out My Love is Cool by Wolf Alice. One of the best shoegaze-y albums I've listened to in a long time.

They're also great live!

The TCQ album is ok it starts off strong but halfway it got ho-hum for me. I wished they got more experimental towards the end to me it just sounds safe.

amen to all that, especially the bolded

wait shit Fat Jon had new shit this year?!

Is he someone notable? I just found out about this mixtape through the manga.

I want to listen to Tribe album, but I still haven't listened to one of their olds and feel like I should wait for that first, but I probably won't get around to it until 2017. I don't like feeling like I have to rush it.

The genres and mixtures of cultures on this is almost overwhelming: 90's Europop nonsense, J-Pop hyper-saccharine, 80's City Pop, UK Garage and Bass, EDM, Chiptune, Deadpan english raps, DIY indie groups etc. The most charming thing about KKB is that there isn't a single song here that is about "being in love". We've got Trampolining, taking Selfies, annoying songs that get stuck in your head, taking a break, and graduation ceremonies. And in the case of Trampoline, they take the theme and take it all to the Nth degree - bouncy synth-lines, every lyrical trope on reaching the top and falling down - sometimes it's just on that border of annoying but I think it just falls the right side due to the infectious and obviously over-the-top delivery ("But that's okay, there's a TRAMPOLINE waiting for you!")

Bonito Generation is the antidote of 2016, the most joyous pop album of year.

Jessy Lanza - Oh No : Hard to top the debut but manages to be comparable with more confident vocal performances which leads to more interesting and diverse tracks. Huge Yellow Magic Orchestra influence in the Jeremy Greenspan production, and it was really nice to hear the Shangaan sound by the borrowing of Nozinja and using it to devastating effect on It Means I Love You. Title track comes out nowhere too, and delivers probably her best pop moment on the entire record.
Beyonce - Lemonade : One of the strongest statements this year in music. Beyonce has reached that point where it doesn't matter if she sells albums or not, and because of her unique influence she brought to the fore issues facing black women in US. She delivers an album full of some great moments, co-written with some of the most interesting producers of the moment. It's still rare for pop to deliver such a obvious singular vision from an artist. The visual film is just a staggering work of art and is by far the best way to enjoy this project.
Parquet Courts - Human Performance : Still maintaining that somewhat apathetic attitude, but sounding a touch less raucous. It's allowed for the songwriting to come to the fore. Impressively simple songs rub shoulders with some more nuanced tracks which are not afraid to be a little stripped down. It's very much like The Saints later LPs, once they calmed a little.
Prins Thomas - Principe Del Norte : A ridiculous 4 LP set of ambient tracks from Prins Thomas. Each side can be chosen at random to be played, and often that's exactly how I've listened. There is often just enough of a kick there to keep some interest, but it's been a perfect backdrop for my working time.
Thee Oh Sees - A Weird Exits : It's another Thee Oh Sees (not even the only Oh Sees record released this year!), but another ridiculous journey into incessant never-gonna-stop motorik rhythms, psychedelic imagery, John Dwyer heavily echoed, spaced-out vocals, and hands-down the best song titles this year (Ticklish Warrior, Plastic Plant, Gelatinous Cube to name a 3rd of them)
Junior Boys - Big Black Coat : The dark industrial city feeling comes through and has elements of moody R'n'B, Detroit Techno, and gold old synth pop. It's a really great listen, and the influence of the working relationship of Greenspan/Lanza is clearly showing in both works. Nice Jesus & Mary Chain inspired cover-art too.
Melt Yourself Down - Last Evenings On Earth : More Jazz Punk delivering the soundtrack to an impending apocalypse. Some electronic elements have worked their way on this album which add some more texture, but those duelling saxaphones and trumpets and still the highlight.
The Invisible - Patience : A bright funky and soulful album in which the multitude of collaborators just blend seamlessly in. Beats punch and click satisfactorily and the smooth vocals glide in and out and in-between.
Dan Lissvik - Midnight : I was a little hesitant that Midnight (an album he recorded in the early morning hours), would be coldly techno but it's much nearer to the baleric warmth Lissvik's Studio was known for. You could be mistaken on a few tracks that they might be brand new Studio tracks, such is the tendancy for the tracks to drift into new directions part way. It's pretty much exactly what I wanted in that sense.

I feel like there should be more Post-Rock and Indie in there but I started seriously branching out from my familiar territory only about a year ago so I'm not too confident the albums I enjoy right now will stay the test of time once the novelty wears off. The two listed however are just phenomenal. Also that's all from the top of my head, I might be forgetting some.
