LG promises HDR gaming input lag patch for 2016 OLED sets

Why don't you just download the firmware from lg.com and save it in your flash drive? It will automatically detect it and install it.
It won't work. I asked the lady at LG on the phone if it would work and she confirmed it will not, the TV won't recognize an update from another country.

I paid $7000 CAD for this TV, I'm not risking it and since I can't find one Canadian online who has tried this shows me no one else is willing to try.

Is the Canadian model also -P at the end? America is -P, EU is -V, and AU is -T from what I can tell, this person on AVS seems to indicate they used the American update just fine http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ol...me-discussion-b6-c6-e6-g-48.html#post48847073

But they aren't very explicit so it's your risk to take/not take.

Can anyone confirm the best settings for the Xbox One S?

I have the color set to standard and 10 bit on the console and the black level set to Low on my TV, but I feel that the blacks are crushed and obscuring the background on stuff, specifically Killer Instinct. Setting the gamma from the default 2.2 to 1.9 makes a big improvement, but people argue not to do this, while some argue it's necessary because the XB1 apparently has a gamma problem.

I've also been having issues where the TV won't display the PS4 when it's turned on. I tend to have to shut off the TV and turn it back on so that it displays properly. Anyone else having this issue, and know how to fix it?

Yeah, wide looks terrible. I just tried Extended in Forza Horizon 3 HDR and it looks good. Not saying it's the most accurate setting, but the increased vibrancy suits the game.

Can you show me who is setting color gamut to wide for gaming?

You can test it yourself if you have Forza Horizon 3 that it is definitely wrong because you can compare the in game models to real world factory paint jobs on cars.

The new Mercedes AMG GTR has a very unique green paint job. On normal and Extended, it looks like all the marketing pictures and video released so far. When color gamut is set to wide, it turns into a weird flat mint green.

Normal is also the best for HDR movies. Just tried a UHD blu ray and Wide makes people's skin tones look super strange.
I don't have an Xbox One S (can't bring myself to buy a console I play once a year for a second time), but in all but one game that I've tried HDR with normal color gamut looks desaturated when compared to SDR with normal color gamut. It could be that I'm not used to what color should look like in HDR. I'm just comparing it to a professionally calibrated SDR set (maybe it really needs a pro to set it up to make it look right). For example, Ratchet and Clank looks very desaturated in HDR on normal color gamut vs SDR on normal. But on Wide color gamut with HDR it looks as saturated as SDR with HDR lighting if that makes sense. One of the few videos with settings I could find was from AVForums. Here's the link:

https://youtu.be/HXwFi3E1K0g

Sound and vision and Cnet chose to not release OLED settings. So I was hoping you had some better sources than I've been able to find for proper settings until my set is calibrated.

If you read down into the comments a bit on that video, AVForums confirmed that LG's engineers told them that "Normal" gamut should be used for HDR.

If any game looked better w/ a wide color gamut, though , I'd assume it would be ratchet and clank.. a lot of people find cartoony movies and games to look better with more 'punch' in the color.

Oh good catch! I never read YouTube comments.

I don't usually either.. it's risky business lol

anyway, I don't mind sharing my calibrated HDR settings..

the calibrator spent 4 hours here one afternoon doing ISF Dark room, HDR standard and to a lesser extent, game mode.

Basic settings: 100,100,50,0,56,G2
Picture Mode: HDR Standard
Advanced settings: off,off,normal,off,off white bal: warm2: code val: 127: 1,0,1 254: 0,‐3,‐2 320: 2,‐2,4 386: 0,‐3,2 419: ‐2,1,1 451: ‐4,0,‐3467: ‐4,0,‐3 482: ‐6,0,‐4 498: ‐7,0,‐5 513: ‐10,0,‐8 529: ‐11,0,‐9 544:  ‐12,0,‐11 560: ‐13,0,‐16 575: ‐13,0,‐16 591: ‐18,0,‐21 606: ‐19,0,‐23 622: ‐20,0,‐25 637:‐21,0,‐27 653: ‐22,0,‐30 668: ‐30,0,‐35

The problem w/ calibrating HDR on the LG set is that you can't calibrate from 70 to 100 brightness levels on the white balance. They use code values like the ones above, and they don't go past 668, so the full range of brightness can't be calibrated.

why not adjust the gamma/brightness from the game settings?

Did you named the folder "LG_DTV"? (without clause) That's how I did it on my B6 for the HDCP problem. Plus, I checked the LG Canada and there's already a firmware for the HDR Game Mode. It was dated November 30th. http://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/software-firmware?search=OLED55E6P&pageVisibleFlag=2

Would these settings be for a LG55UH6030?

Waiting on the B6 patch confirmation before I buy the TV, so I'm playing the waiting game or I'll just stick with the KS8000.

Hm, a 4k HDR enabled OLED TV. How expensive do those fuckers start at? If it's sub- 1,300 dollars I can do it. Looking for a TV for the entertainment room. I have the x800D Bravia for my room.

I picked up a 55" B6 for around $1,700 + tax right after black Friday. Looks like they've went up to around $2,000 now. Probably won't see those prices again until LG is trying to clear stock after CES or next Holiday season. And LG is the only real mass supplier of these displays, so $1,300 anytime soon is probably a dream. Even the Sony OLEDs are supposed to use LG displays. If you need a new set now you can get a 55" Samsung KS8000 for just under that. I'd recommend that.

And where the hell is this B6 HDR Game Mode update? I would like to take my set out of the box or just return it so I can get a 2017 model. It's killing me watching it sit there.

It's already confirmed. Release date was December 6th or whenever it is ready. Hopefully it's soon and performance is within a few ms of the other sets.

Will your vendor not take it back if it's opened? Unless you are particularly sensitive to input lag it might not be as bad as you imagine, even without the patch.

With my C6 I've noticed that I can switch between Auto and YUV420 and get completely different HDR brightness results at times.

Using the Max Brightness (HDR) setting in the Resident Evil 7 demo it will sometimes match the squares at a value of 1300 and if I keep clicking between the Auto and YUV420 and switching back to the game it'll sometimes still not match the squares at a value of 2000.

This is all with the same settings on the TV.

Huh. Nothing listed on the 65 inch model, that is the page I have been checking for weeks. Talk about a hole in their website design.

Saw the update for EU model

Updated my 65c6v

Do we have a patch note ? I need to go work now and I'm wondering if it also correct the hdcp issue with PS4 pro

I didn't realize this for days after the latest update, but when playing an HDR-enabled game the Picture Mode switches automatically to HDR with Vivid, Bright, or Standard options. Is it supposed to switch out of Game Mode like that after the update that enables HDR in Game Mode? I have it on HDR Bright right now, but I don't know if it has the same amount of lag as Game Mode.

The picture options in HDR mode are different

It should switch out of normal Game mode, yes, but since the latest update there's now an HDR Game setting in addition to the other three presets. That is assuming you have a C6 or above, the B6 hasn't gotten the HDR Game mode yet I believe.

Well that is good to know! That means my set did not receive that particular update because there is no HDR Game option on my menu. :( I guess that software update on Dec. 1st wasn't it. At least I know what to ask LG now if that'll be coming to my model. Thanks!

You will only be able to see the HDR menus when the set is receiving HDR content. That confused me at first.

Not sure. I grabbed it from Best Buy. I have until January 15th to return it, but I couldn't see anything in their return policy about being able to return an open box or not without an actual hardware defect. So I just decided to wait until the firmware was released and performance tests were done to open it up. Probably a good thing I don't get too attached anyway if I have to return it and wait for a 2017 model. Just being impatient!

They have a holiday refund period that let's your return it past the typical 15 days. It doesn't mention that it must be closed or whatnot. Though, you're right - it doesn't mention that it's okay if it's open either. I'd call and ask.

Best Buy has always taken open TV's back. It just seemed odd that it's sitting there being unused during the generous holiday return period. I would never advise to keep a TV sealed since it's always possible that there is undiscovered damage. Some retailers require damage such as a cracked screen to be disclosed within a couple days of purchase. I've heard anecdotal stories about Best Buy having a 48 hour window for this.

I actually prefer having retailers deliver displays, since I've known people that got into disputes with retailers about screen damage. Customer takes it home, opens to find damage.. Retailer blames customer since they transported it. I was once buying a new TV and the Best Buy employees broke it while helping me load it into the car. And I really think they've gotten more fragile with the emphasis on thin.

This has come up endlessly in other threads, but I wanted to see if we could reach a consensus on the best console settings for LG OLED owners.

One suggestion was to use the following picture as a reference by opening it up on your console:

sr0pcxh.jpg

Using that as a guide, I found the following settings to be ideal:

PS4: set to Limited, set TV's Black Level to Low

Xbox One: set to Standard, set TV's Black Level to Low and raise Brightness to around 60-65

The XB1 apparently has a gamma/black problem, which I noticed while playing Killer Instinct: certain background details were lost due to the crushed blacks, like logos or characters with black hair. Changing the TV's gamma from 2.2 to 1.9 seemed to also fix this, but people recommend to keep gamma at the default value.

So again, hoping a consensus can be reached, because even now people are arguing about the ideal values.

I don't have an OLED but I just wanted to say that I found the FFXV brightness test picture in HDR mode very helpful to configure my HDR settings on the TV.
In particular to finally get the right combo for the black level and then adjust the TV brightness. I still have to lower the ingame brightness slightly but the test image in FFXV makes it super clear if you cut off blacks/whites in HDR.

Btw isn't full RBG on PS4 and high black level on the TV better than the other way around? That way you don't restrict non-HDR games to limited.

Yep, this. Most people have it set to full and it washes out the colors. If you open up this link via the PS4 browser, you can see the boxes will blend when you have it set to full. Run it again with limited and you'll see the boxes.

http://www.nicolaspeople.com/ch3rokeesblog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/fullrgb_test.jpg

Cool, thanks.

Is there a similar picture I can use to set color values? I'm on custom Cinema mode on the PS4. People swear by ISF, but I would need a color chart to know what individual settings to tweak.

But I tested it on my PC though.

I think this isn't a good test to tell if you should use full or limited, but a test only to tell the current output.

Why not? it tells you that your current setup in "Full" crushes blacks, adjust something accordingly: gama, brightness, contrast, etc on your monitor and gpu output on your PC.

My monitor is calibrated. The only way to see all 24 boxes is to increase the brightness, which will obviously ruin my calibration setting.

Im sorry but, if in "full", it doesn't show all boxes, then Im 99% sure is not calibrated correctly.

If it was correctly calibrated you would see all black details without issue.

So how do you enable this? I have HDR turned on and selected the 'Game' picture mode while playing Skyrim. It feels a lot more responsive, but I don't know if that's because of the picture mode I am in or not.

I'd like my Expert Dark Room setting to work with this.

Guess it was just the Game mode then. Wonder why it was so much snappier versus EDR.
Well, it's snappier because Game Mode has lower input lag..

Can someone be so kind and share their settings for SDR gaming btw? With contrast at 80, brightness at 52, colour at 50 and gamma at 2.2, it's a little washed out.
