Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
One of my new year's resolutions this year is to be more mindful of my entertainment budget. That's not to say that I won't be buying games this year (because let's face it, there is some kick ass stuff coming out) but more in line with these guidelines:
  • Will I play this right away?
  • Do I have something else I would like to play before getting to this game?
  • Do I already own this game on another platform and I'm simply buying it again for convenience sake? (I'm bad at this one)
  • Can I wait until the price goes lower?
And with that, I think I'm planning on only buying a handful of games this year. I still have a ton of stuff I didn't get to from 2016 (and before!) so I'm going to try to tackle some of those games before rushing into what's coming out today.

Also - who is doing the new thread? MRORANGE? GOTY voting will open when the January thread gets posted.

This is what ive been doing for a few yrs now, its been working pretty good for me. I tend to be a yr behind on games cause of it with a few exceptions. For example, ill be playing doom sometime this week or the next and see what all the hype is about.

Things are always better when you focus on buying games you want to play, rather than wasting money on bundles filled with +1s. The world would be a better place if we all followed that rule.

The new thread willl be up around 9pm GMT time.

Please use this thread for posting what you bought during this sale as no one will care in the new thread.

In the mean time think of a witty title for the new thread.

maybe something with 'the winter (sale) of our discontent is over'?

I got Master of Orion (the new one) and Salt and Sanctuary. Both games I had been eyeing for a long time. I wish MOO didnt lock races behind a dlc and I wish S&S was a little cheaper... but overall I only spent about 25 bucks so not bad.

Company of Heroes 2 + DLC
Starbound
Poly Bridge

I try to buy pick up and play that I can easily stop rather than engrossing story games as I don't have time.

It seems like the way to do things, and it's not like I'm going to run out of stuff to play (with over 3,500 games on Steam and easily 100 in my "want to play right now" list). It also seems advantageous from a price perspective since by the time I get around to playing games from 2017 they'll be on deeper discounts.

Things are always better when you focus on buying games you want to play, rather than wasting money on bundles filled with +1s. The world would be a better place if we all followed that rule.

I'm not even opposed to buying a bundle, as long as there is at least one game in there that meets those criteria on it's own. Humble and Bundlestars have had a few(?) good bundles this past year that were easily worth the bundle price. Last year I stopped buying +1 bundles, so it's a start.

Running out of room on my hard drive did wonders for making me more choosy about what games I wanted. Got a $20 steam card for Christmas that I haven't even touched.

I slowed down a lot in 2016, but then the Humble Monthly Gamble got a hold of me. I'm trying to fight it.

I managed to hold out until ten minutes before the sale ended, and then gave in. Mostly just wanted MKXL to play over my steam link.

back when I was out of a job I used the simple "only buy a game of if you're going to play it right away" rule and that worked marvels

it helps with the backlog also cos u miss games on sale so you're forced to play games you've already bought in between sales

How I wish I could follow those guidelines. I mean, I always make the same questions, but regardless of the answers, my buyer impulse beats me and I press the buy button.

Hopefully this year will be different. My backlog increases instead of decreasing.

Humble monthly is a tough one. I might quit it this year. It has been very good for filling my Steam wallet, it's just that I have over 150€ in it now even after this sale.

Here's my haul:

33 Pinball tables for Pinball FX2
Euro Truck Simulator 2 Essentials
One Finger Death Punch

Set me back about 35€. Very happy to have my old pinball collection back, should've know getting a big pinball collection on the 360 wasn't the smart idea, at least I got it back on a more timeless machine for a very reasonable price this sale.

I did the Humble monthly once and was really disappointed that i got 3 games I already owned and that their "exclusive" was just a demo and didn't include a Steam key. Never again. If there is something I want from the Humble monthly, I'll probably just pick it up for cheap in the BST thread.

That said, I have a subscription to GAMEPUMP!!!! as well as PS+ and XBL that will last throughout the year, so even though I won't be buying many games I'll still have some new variety available.

The second point, in bold, is the one I used the most during this sale and the others last year. I put all my unplayed in one Steam category, and compared all potential purchases to the ones there, and that worked quite well. Like for how it was no point in buying a bunch of new strategy games when I still need to play Civ 6, Endless Legend and Prison Architect more.

So I just discovered Pac-Man Championship Edition, buying it by pure curiosity and I always was a big Pac-Man fan.

Boy oh boy was I missing out, holy shit, I just played for an hour and a half and this is insanely good!

Games I bought this year.

Pharaoh Rebirth
Wizorb
Verde Station
The House in Fata Morgana Deluxe Edition
Shipwreck
Shatter with Soundtrack
DuckTales Remastered
RunGunJumpGun

I'm pretty happy with what I got. Shipwreck isn't that good, but I knew that going in. There's too few Zelda like games.

I almost pulled the trigger on a few things, but then I realized that I have a ton of Humble Monthly games I haven't touched yet. First Winter sale since I joined in 2008 with $0 spent.

Not that there aren't a ton of great games on Steam. I have nearly 200 titles on my wishlist. I just have a massive backlog that is getting harder to ignore with every year.

I ended up with close to 150 games most of them heavily discounted but I did get Shovel Knight , Trails SC , Disgaea , God Eater 1&2 and etc so i'm satisfied.

Not sure if it's been posted but GameStop has Wasteland 2 (box with steam key) for $5 at their physical locations.

Lock this bad boy up, too many "main topic" people posting in here anyway, too weird...

I mean... join us all in the Community!

Guacamelee
Chroma Squad/SanctuaryRPG/Hue (from a bundle with ~10 other games, most I gave away)
Salt and Sanctuary
Seraph
Last Remnant
Steamworld Heist

Glad I went picked up those "Metroidvanias" last minute. Gaucamelee is incredible. I've been playing it for the past 7 hours straight. Salt and Sanctuary is pretty good too.

So glad I learned my lesson about buying too many games a few years ago. I mostly picked up things I genuinely wanted to play. There were other games I wanted, but they're newer. I'll wait until the prices drop a bit more this summer. :)

Those console exclusive threads become so toxic (Nioh, NieR, Yakuza, SFV, etc).

One side has evidence that these games with this labeling continue to show up on PC.
The other side refuses to except the evidence or, at best, comes to the conclusion that it's not officially announced so shouldn't be discussed.
Both sides get mad and the thread devolves into chaos, strawman arguments, and non-sequiturs. Bloodborne being a common example of the latter.

Had a thread on Nioh today which became, unsurprisingly, locked.

It's this weird psychological intersection where PC users desperately want it on their platform and console users desperately want it kept off other platforms as that implicitly cheapens their investment.

Do it
It is addicting and fun
Been sayiny so last year along with another gaffer

I had just compiled the cart for my last sale purchase, then I made the mistake of trying the Paint it Back demo.

Nuts.

I'm too late to pick it up in the sale, but is this 'just' picross, or is there more too it? If so, Picross 3D Round 2 on 3DS is probably all that I need, but I'm intrigued.

Downloading the demo regardless...

If you think Picross is crack, how about Color Picross?

large.jpg
Or 3D picross :p

Also, http://www.griddlers.net/ is another pretty good way of losing a lot of time, albeit not as slick as dedicated games can be.

I got Megaman Legacy Collection, Undertale, and Turok.

That's enough for me. Most of my holiday spending was on PS4 games, and my review backlog is already out of control. I have five or so reviews to hammer out before Yakuza Zero & Gravity Rush 2 hit later this month.

I gotta say that the threads are endlessly amusing. It's crazy how mad some people get at someone saying that a game will get a PC port eventually.

Wait until a I do a follow-up to my thread series on the sales of Japanese games on PC/Steam later this month. Every thread has several posters trying to downplay the success/worth of PC ports to previously exclusive niche games.

Thread OP: Dragons Dogma is over 650k on PC
Reply 1: How many of those copies were $3 or in bundles?
Reply 2: The console version was over 2M copies.
Reply 3: That seems really low.

Team Ninja have been pretty clear that it's exclusive but yeah, this labeling shit needs to stop. Pubs/Devs should just say if they have plans for other platforms or not, it's annoying to see better port come up 2 months after the purchase, but I guess that's their plan, to make people waste more money on their games.

Why do you even bother wasting your time in these kind of arguments when it's already obvious from the get go that it isn't about wether or not a game could come to PC but about them just not wanting it to come

GUYS

Pizza Hut has a better sale than Steam!

But Pizza Hut sucks

I also think PC only gamers need to accept that they can't get everything. The self entitlement amazes me at times.

You'll never get Bloodborne on PC. If you want it, get a PS4. End of story.

"An item on your Steam wishlist is on sale!"

...and there was me thinking I'd had enough of these emails for several months :p

I've mostly used this sale to check off a few low-price and high-discount titles from my wishlist, nothing big:

System Shock Enhanced Edition
Total Annihilation
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut
Satellite Reign
Pony Island
Shadowrun: Hong Kong

Bundle Stars' tier 1 "Nemesis Bundle 2":
SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition
Shadow Blade: Reload
Eldritch

And some card fodder, for 54p in total:
Labyronia 2 RPG
Labyronia RPG
Destiny Warriors RPG
Secret Of Magia RPG
Legend of Mysteria RPG
Greyfox RPG

Evoland, Evoland II and Abzu were all somewhat tempting, but seem likely enough to show up in future bundles that I've resisted for now (though saying that, GMG's sale is of course still on for a little longer...)
