ArsTechnica: Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

The latest version of the hakchi tool adds fonts for the missing English characters from before but loses all support for Japanese characters. Hopefully that can be updated in a newer version.

Sadly, the price of NES and Famicom mini is insanely high on our country (about more than double). Nintendo shouldn't have under-shipped. :/

Let's see. These are the must plays in my opinion from most important to least.

(In 10 game blocks)

Super Mario Bros 1-3
Zelda 1-2
Mega Man 2-4
Contra
Super C

Castlevania 1-3
Kirby’s Adventure
Battletoads
Metroid
Mike Tyson’s Punch Out
Ninja Gaiden 1-2
Bubble Bobble

Double Dragon 1-2
Blaster Master
Dragon Warrior 4
Kid Icarus
Tetris
Dr Mario
River City Ransom
Shadowgate
Deja Vu

Life Force
Maniac Mansion
Bionic Commando
Startropics 1-2
Duck Tales
Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers
Mega Man 1, 5-6

Battletoads and Double Dragon
Little Nemo and the Dream Master
Crystalis
TMNT 1-3
Dragon Warrior 1-3

I've heard Batman, Strider, Battle of the Olympus, Metal Storm, Vice, and Shatterhand are great but haven't played them.

Checks list, doesn't see Willow or Jackal.

YOUR OPINION IS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD!

This is all you need, including the latest files and exes:

http://clusterrr.com/soft/hakchi2.zip

(Currently 2.0.5)

Doesn't require any sort of Mario Bros save file.

However, due to the false positive virus notifications in the previous package, you will need to download Zadig Util for the driver.

Edit: And it's pretty simple, I don't think anyone has bricked their console yet. The tool itself is super straightforward once you launch it. Dump your kernel (as a backup), and then click add game to add each game you want, selecting 1P/2P/2P Simultaneous, release date, and choosing the box art (can google search from directly in the tool). Once you are done, make sure everything that you want game-wise is checked and then click the button to send them all to your system. That's all there is to it.

Glad to know it's really come along.

No dude, you should spend money making the Nvidia Shield work just to stream roms to your set. Don't have a pc? Buy one. Have an AMD gpu or even a Nvidia gpu that doesn't meet the required specs? Upgrade. Maybe your home network isn't sufficient? You should probably purchase all new equipment. What are you doing without a proper PC setup anyway? You guys need to stop living under a rock and realize that consoles are obsolete.

This is a little bit off topic, but I was wondering what is the best solution for using the NES classic controller on the PC?

Fastest and simplest would be using a wiimote and a bluetooth receptor but I could be wrong.

Yep, plug the classic controller into a Wiimote, which you would then interface over bluetooth.

Hakchi2 has a google button near the bottom after you put the info in. Works great for box art.

I think the OP wants to know what resolution the classic NES interface is built for. Those Google images vary in resolution.

That is a great list thank you!! Since I already added 16 games to the NES Mini do I do things differently when I connect the NES to my PC..since I already dumped the kernal and everything how do I do it when I want to add additional games..do I just connect the NES Mini to the PC and click add more games and thats it or do I need to do something else

Can't wait for someone to work out a custom OS and we can have every game. I love my AVS but having a cute little NES on my desk with every game would be a nice novelty. The flash memory absolutely has enough space for a simple UI and every ROM. I'm just hoping they get restocked before Nintendo locks it.

Well, that's his character. James has admitted that some of the games featured in AVGN videos he actually enjoys playing.

Not in this case, going by his commentary. He said it was a deceptive bad game.

I think that's rare. He said he had planned on reviewing Monster Party but it wasn't bad enough.

Haven't played Willow or Jackal. Lolo is good if you want a puzzle game.

2.07 is out which fixes some font issues

Just click "Add more games" (you can do this without having the NES connected). Anything without a tick next to it won't appear on the mini, including any games you already added - Don't forget your boxarts!!

Then "Synchronise selected games" and you will get the waiting for NES mini box pop up. Once its connected it will do its funky thing.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit on a MacBook Pro via Boot Camp. Loaded the latest hakchi. I can't get the games on the NES Classic. I held down Reset + Power button. Installed the driver. Dumped kernel, added games to the list, loaded modified kernel, and allowed it to add games.

Every single time I've attempted to put new games on it (tried different numbers 25-40 additional games) ... won't load them. System simply reboots and has all of the 30 original games and my saves originally on the system. No errors or anything. Tried in a Parallels VM, VMware Fusion VM, and Boot Camp. Same thing. Changed the cable once, no dice.

Edit: Sorta figured it out. Tried another cable but now I get a C8 error. Oi.

DD1 was a huge disappointment. No doubles play, and completely butchered from the arcade.

Strider was also butchered compared to the arcade, but ok as a standalone game.

Besides Jackal, you forgot Metal Gear.

Good, but toss out TMNT 2, the game doesn't hold up well and has zero re-playability unless you are 12 maybe. You can play it blind folded, it's a snoozefest. If you need a side scroller beat up game, you want Mighty Final Fight or leave it for more Double Dragon.

What about Adventure Island? Are you really going to play Tetris? If I remember, The Flintstone games on NES were legit pretty fun.

There is a serious lack of sports games here

Ha, I agree about TMNT. I never cared for any of them. I put them on at the bottom because I thought people loved them. If that's not the case, I'll be glad to take them off. I thought people were going to complain that they weren't higher. I feel the same way about Kirby. It's too easy. But I know I'm in the minority on that one.

I thought for a second about putting Adventure Island. But just for the cryptic insane way of continuing, I went with no.

"Near the end of the first level, before a sign that says ''G'' on it, jump up at the edge of the cliff that's after the platforms. If you find an egg (that contains a bee), you know you've done it. At any Game Over screen of at the Title Screen from now on, hold any D-Pad button, then press Start. You should repappear in the start of the level you died."

Also controls were a bit awkward. It was hard to change momentum when you were jumping. That damn death skateboard that you couldn't get off of or turn around on. Those fucking frogs.

Good point on Tetris.

So you can remove the epilepsy protection by deleting "--enable-armet" from the command line arguments (will be at the end). I have tested it and it works on Megaman (boss introduction prior to level start) and Battletoads (1st boss). It removes the weird flashing effect the epilepsy protection caused.

I can't seem to patch Battletoads though. I get a message that the rom was successfully patched, but it still crashed on the 2nd level. After I patched, I did the whole "upload more games" routine, but I didn't go in the roms folder and select the updated rom. I just assumed it would upload the patched rom, but maybe that was a mistake. Do I have to re-select the patched rom to the NES Classic for it to work, or should it recognize the original rom was patched when uploading?

This is excellent news.

I have found thecoverproject has some incredible NES covers that have been restored. You need to crop them a bit to remove the side and back, but it didn't take too long since the files have lines near the crop marks. I cropped mine as 1545 pixels wide, counting from the far right.

I did this today and it was insanely easy. Took my friend's NES Classic up from 30 games to 87. Only issue is that Crisis Force doesn't work :,(

So does the app still cause windows defender to go nuts? If so, what do I need to do to fix that before using the app to add games?
