Switch being a hybrid, traditionally handheld series will probably get upgraded

SolVanderlyn

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I know this seems like a "well, duh" comment, but sit and think about that for a second.

I'm talking about games like:

Fire Emblem
Mario and Luigi
Pokemon and its Mystery Dungeon spinoffs
Golden Sun (one can dream)

And so on. The past few generations have had a clear handheld/console split where the handheld titles suffer from their inferior hardware, but with the Switch, this is obviously no longer the case. I'm pretty sure the Switch is meant to play both markets at once and not support the 3DS at the same time, but correct me if I'm wrong.

If so, this is awesome. Pokemon is getting its third version on the Switch, so we already know that's coming. Fire Emblem might have the chance to increase its scope and scale once again, like it did during the Tellius games on GCN/Wii. Mario and Luigi might finally feel like the proper console sequel to Super Mario RPG.

Then there's the fact that major games like Luigi's Mansion or Animal Crossing, or spinoffs like 3D Land, will no longer be held back by handheld hardware. We won't get anymore Hyrule Warriors: Legends cases where the best version of the game is the graphically inferior one. And there won't be a split between Virtual Consoles anymore!

Do you see handheld franchises coming back in bigger and better ways? How do you think they could take advantage of their new console-level power? I think out of all the things the Switch represents, the cannibalization of handheld games is the most exciting. Can you imagine a console level Advance Wars game?

Some of those big ones will probably get upgraded, which is great.

However, some lesser selling ones will probably die off as they can't justify the higher development costs too look decent on the big screen.

Hope Mario and Luigi is a reboot. An action RPG like KH might be neat, but either way it needs work and better tech can help.
Excited to see these franchises make a big leap in that regard.

You answered your own question. There'll just be one version. No more distinction between mobile and stationary.
Vita already does this for many games.

After last night, I no longer believe the Switch is the 3DS successor in addition to the Wii U successor.

Now think we will see these series on 4DS.

This would be the one thing that can make me get a Switch. If all of Nintendo's efforts--handheld and console--are now going on Switch solely, with all the quirky handheld games and RPGs etc that would've gone on 3DS coming to Switch instead, I may yet bite.

Potentially, but they hardly have any handheld only series anymore outside of mainline Pokemon. Admittedly FE skipped a console gen, but otherwise all their other traditionally handheld series are either dead, or just parallel entries in series that exist on the console. I would hope the combined platform means we will see the return of stuff like Golden Sun or Advance Wars, but I'm not optimistic.

I have similar concerns and I'm hoping this won't be the case. Part of what gives me hope is those threads showing how quality the assets are for some of the 3DS games. So like, I'm wondering then if some of these games wouldn't look pretty good with their existong budgets. But I may be totally misunderstanding that, I'm not too knowledgeable about this.

Ah, and maybe the lower selling ones can get lower budget eShop entries at least?

Monster Hunter that doesnt look like shit will be nice.

The upgrades in Sun and Moon definitely felt like GameFreak laying the groundwork for the Swtich Pokemon game. Cant wait to see that. Console "real" pokemon has been a dream.

There has to be a clamshell design successor to 3DS that falls into the same ecosystem as Switch but comes at a cheaper price. That thing will be Nintendo's main product next gen, not home console Switch or mobile, I think that's pretty clear given the low effort they showed in both regards.

I'd be totally fine with a Fire Emblem game whose presentation is almost exactly the same as Fates or Awakening, but at 1080/720p. I think (well, I hope), we get a lot of those, priced at $40 for those "traditionally handheld" games.

For example, there's Youtube videos of 1080p Pokemon Sun/Moon, and outside of the textures it looks... really good! Not going to blow anyone away, but I would totally go for pretty much exactly that at a $40 price point.

I think people are expecting handheld games that existed mostly because they were cheap to make to somehow get the full HD treatment in gorgeous graphics.

Either they won't get made anymore or they'll still look cheap. Remains to be seen if they try to sell them full price or something.

Oh I think many would look "fine." Whether they look "fine" enough to not get slammed by reviewers and to generate sales over full budget titles would be the sticking point.

Agreed that budget e-shop releases would probably be the better way to go. But Nintendo doesn't seem to be that into tiered pricing so far with the MK port being $60 etc. so who knows since they did some on Wii U with Captain Toad at $40, Splatoon $40 in Europe etc.

Think harder. Why would Nintendo make a hybrid?

Because they cant support two platforms at this point with their size

After the presentation and the Treehouse stream, it seems that the Switch is more like a Wii U that you can take on the go than a 3DS that you can dock to a TV

Eh Fire Emblem on 3DS was about as elaborate as I think IntSys was ready to handle.

Path of Radiance was not pretty.

Yeah, Pokemon and Animal Crossing probably won't have problems, but other games will definitely suffer.

I guess the latter and im fine with that.

I expect pokemon to receive the HD treatment though

I think it would be stupid for them not to. I thought them saying that Switch is just their home console successor and has no impact on the 3DS was just marketing/hedging.

But last night's debut really made it seem like they view Switch not as a hybrid, but as a gimmick console the same way they viewed the Wii/Wii U. It's not a hybrid because it meets all your needs, it's a hybrid by coincidence in order to support this go-anywhere multiplayer with the next evolution of motion controls.

I hope I'm being pessimistic, but if anything I've just started to take them at their word on messaging instead of assuming they would do something exciting/nice.

If they publicly announce the successor to any 3DS series, even third party, as a Switch exclusive I will be convinced and happy.

I don't think this is neccessarily true. There seem to be other benefits. The user gets a fusion of both libraries, and flexible play options. It compares favorably to owning a Wii u and a 3ds together.

Depends on what one considers an upgrade, of course. Better visuals and stuff, if that indeed happens, will be nice. However, I definitely don't consider having to pay for an online service to trade and battle people online in Pokémon an "upgrade" when those same features have been free for the past 10 years since online was added in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl. At least personally, I'd rather keep the status quo than deal with that, but alas. :/

.

I'm sure they are waiting until Pokémon to announce this. I mean, Switch SMT and Square Enix Octopath are kinda "successors" in some way, but a Nintendo handheld franchise as Pokémon will consolid the narrative.

Why do you think Switch uses carts? They will release more form factors in the future but they will all share the same games library.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
So then.... Where were they?

I'm cautiously optimistic about Mario & Luigi.

It may turn out that many of these franchises just get the boot and aren't seen from again.

This is my hope...My honest to gawd hope.

If they announce a 4DS, I'm trading in the Switch. (unless i can play 4ds games on the Switch)...which is fine.

An HD monster hunter? uughghghg.

I don't have any problem 3ds graphics on the switch.

I love the idea of a hybrid console so long as it ACTUALLY is a hybrid console and Nintendo treats it as such.

Or, perhaps some of them go to smartphones.

I don't think the timing of Nintendo's expanding into smartphone development and making a hybrid console is a coincidence.

Oh for sure for the ones that would work well with touch controls.

This is a concern of mine.

If the handheld games try to keep up with the console games on the system it's going to mean bigger budgets and higher retail prices. Franchises like Pokémon and Monster Hunter are better off with the scope and fidelity they have now, rather than attempting something console-worthy, I think.

Ever seen a console with its entire line up announced at its reveal? Cause i haven't.

Ever seen a console unveiled less than 2 months before its reveal? I sure havent.

After being silent for so long and Wii U dead for over a year, Id expect a blowout of what they have for 2017.

This is probably what I'm most excited for in the Switch. I know that handheld games aren't going to look the best, especially in comparison to what we are used to getting on a console like the Wii U, even. But, having all of those franchises under one roof will justify the purchase of a Switch for me. It's too bad that we didn't get too many announcements of handheld franchises. Because I'd love that to be the supplement to the console games that we're getting.

All I really need is HD Monster Hunter going forward that at least graphically matches the Wii U version and I'm content the rest of my days. The Wii and Wii U versions spoiled me with huntin' on my TV and as much as I still enjoy the series on a portable, I prefer the spectacle on my television.

So, we're still going to act like Nintendo is actually, upgrading a 3ds with a 300$ giant tablet, and that it's gonna be all they have in the next 5 years.

Let's pretend ok.

They're gonna do that eventually. I do think they could've shown a bit more but they have to save stuff for directs and E3.

The real problem is that they absolutely needed more games for launch.

Or they can't justify costly development and go mobile or just die off.

Or because they cost so much to make now and they are HD they will be multiplatform which means not Switch exclusive and be available on PS4/XB1/Steam and even PS3/Vita for Japan.
