"3DS has a long life in front of it. They’re going to coexist just fine." - Reggie

I don't believe it for a single second. One the Switch pulls ahead (an it will) of the 3DS they're dropping it hard. Reggie may say it's a home console and they will continue to hammer that message because I'm assuming that they don't wanna be questioned about the $299 price tag but even so it's a fucking handheld, regardless of how powerful a handheld it is.

The entire point of Switch (at least to me) would be for all of Nintendo's 1st party devs could focus all resources and efforts on this one console which would means even more amazing games for us.

Bullshit.

Nintendo talks about unifying their console and handhelds with the same architecture to aid development and cut costs.

Now they try and tell the 3DS owners that they're not pissing in their face and that it's really raining.

OK Reggie.Sure.

They'll slowly phase out the 3DS support to nothing. It's barely getting any as it is.

Reggie need to drop that Switch is a console first... it will only backfire and lead to comparison to Xbone and PS4

The difference this time is the price gap between 3DS and Switch. It's going to be a while before Switch will be a low enough price to fully replace 3DS, right?

If the switch fails they need something to rely on so they can't kill 3DS yet. If Switch sells well at launch i wouldn't be surprised they quickly kill the 3DS.
I also wouldn't be surprised if Pokemon Stars becomes multi if Switch fails.

Nintendo doesnt get to decide how long the 3DS lives or dies. If Monster Hunter and Pokemon and Dragon Quest are appearing on the 3DS it isnt going away.

The 3DS will be a thorn in the Switch's side for at least another 12 months, maybe even 18-24.

Why does anything Reggie say ever get a thread? He will say literally anything no matter how disingenuous he needs to be. Unlike Phil Spencer or Shu he doesn't have any say in anything either.

3DS probably has a year left. By the end of 2018, you'll start seeing a lot more "bite-sized" titles from Nintendo on Switch, alongside console-style games.
I hope it's an even quicker transition than that. The potential consolidation of Nintendo studios, along with handheld games from 3rd parties coming along for the ride, is one of the most promising aspects of the hybrid approach.

I absolutely love my 3DS and already think it is has a great enough library for them to stop supporting it. I really would love all if all of Nintendo's studios focused solely on the Switch.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
As a 3DS owner, I'd actually be more reassured if they said "yeah, we're killing it. Go buy a Switch." The less this old-ass hardware gets trotted out after the Switch launch, the better. Focus on the thing that needs the support.

He oversold it when he said "long life". I'm sure it has some left in it for sure. But definitely not longterm.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
All Reggie is saying - they will continie to sell the system as long as there is a demand. Not that they will develop mayor new series entries on 3DS instead of the Switch.

The 3DS isnt going anywhere as long as it sells and the catalog of evergreens performs well. They dont even need release many new first party titles at this point - it will sell well on price alone during Holidays and Co.
Why waste time with a 3DS revision that wouldn't sell very well instead of making a portable only Switch? If they need more 3DS sales they can just drop its price.

Smaller/portable only Switch revision isnt happening this year though.

I agree with that.

I don't recall Nintendo ever saying they wanted a single platform that they could focus on. That is just what everybody else has been asking them to do, isn't it? It always seemed premature to me to assume the Switch would replace the Wii U and the 3DS.

What do people expect him to say?

"We are killing off the 3DS, when the Switch releases. Please don't be mad."

If you had to back one of those systems for surviviability, no one in their right mind would say the Switch. The 3ds can be refreshed until the end of time. That foundation is solid. Only a fool would deliberately tank their cash cow for a gamble on a concept in its third round.

I honestly do expect the 3DS to be fine until the Switch drops in price

a $300 system with $60 games can coexist with a $99-200 system with $40 games

when the Switch drops to $250 I expect them to fire sale the remaining 3DS's and then it'll be done. so 2018 probably.

good i'll just keep playing my 3DS until Nintendo put out some more games for the Switch and maybe give it a price drop. i'm not paying £340 just for Zelda lol (£280 for switch/£60 for zelda) and that doesn't even include shipping.

So even Nintendo has no faith in the Switch.

And are there ANY new first party 3DS games slated to come out in 2017?

You aren't entirely wrong, but Nintendo can just stop making 3DS if they want. Nintendo is always quick to kill its products.

Nintendo's 2017 3DS lineup post-Switch release is:
- Mario Sports (Spring 2017)
- Ever Oasis (2017)
- A 2D Pikmin platformer (2017)
- It is theoretically possible that Miitopia might be localized.
- I guess theoretically Nintendo could localize Yo-kai Watch 3
... - It is possible to imagine some long-shot world where Nintendo localizes subsequent Inazuma Eleven games
... - or like Culdcept?

Among third parties, the major games forthcoming are:
- Dragon Quest XI
- Monster Hunter XX
- Lady Layton if it ends up coming out, but I doubt Nintendo will localize it.

This is not the lineup for a system that is going to coexist just fine this is the lineup for a system that has had a decent lifespan and now is being wound down.

I think people is read it wrongly
He is sincere, unfortunately
Because Switch will suffer (already suffered ) a lot due to this crazy and wrong Nintendo internal policy /strategy

I think that he has a bridge to sell you as well. The 3DS is dead, and outside of Pokemon, their software sales have suffered a steep decline. With or without the Switch, the 3DS' days are numbered. Hell, even if the Switch doesn't take off when it comes out, the 3DS will still need to be replaced, and fast.

What do people expect him to say?

"We are killing off the 3DS, when the Switch releases. Please don't be mad."
Not making a bald-faced lie that everyone knows is a lie would be sort of nice.

There goes the PR talk.

(Or at least I hope that, not interested on dropping 330€ just to play zelda now and get a wiiu 2.0 when they can just unify handheld and home console on switch if they want)

It's 6 years old, we all know it's getting replaced, and you're about to release a portable console, so....

true but the switch doesn't need to have anything to do with it. if the switch bombs, which i think is likely, then they might just come out with a new product to replace the 3DS. that's if they don't give the switch a price drop and start bring out games people actually care about. apart from zelda you need to wait until the end of the year for a mario game (which looks awful). who knows when the other huge titles will come. oh and the switch is coming out in about a month and a half...what are people gonna do until later in the year? the switch will be nothing but a paperweight.

3ds' long life going forward will consist of legacy software, a few late Japanese games (mostly niche outside of Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter this year), and some b/c tier Nintendo offerings.

You would be right if this was the lineup after e3 - but we have had a couple of such years in the 3DS lifecycle were people wondered where the games are in the beginning of the year. The main Nintendos IPs are already on the 3DS - so what else they could drop on it is limited.

That doesnt really matter if the can keep selling cheap bundles/including games. They wont drop the 3DS unless Switch is at a price point that can attract those price-sensitive customers as well. WiiU surely isnt the device for that.

The next Inazuma Eleven isn't even a 3DS game (or at least, it looks way too prettier for the 3DS).

Not that I think the 3DS is lasting much longer, but people have been saying it's in its final year for years, yet it still keeps trucking. It'll somehow make it through 2017 with a half-decent lineup considering its successor is out.

Only if waiting for all the Japanese games from 2016-early 2017 to be localized counts as "a long life". 2017 is it for the 3DS. We might see sporadic games after that, but they will be few and far between.

All of the 3DS developers I care about have already announced they're working on at least one game for the Switch, so it isn't hard to see which way the wind is blowing.

We're still waiting for the last Bokujō Monogatari game for the 3DS, that and Dragon Quest XI is all I care about at the moment, and that has a Switch version coming.

I think this means more they'll continue putting games out already announced and localizing games, but I think it'd be a mistake to continue making 3DS games. Whether it was intentional or not, I feel that most people view the Switch as a hybrid that will get all console and handheld support, and anything not on the Switch will be viewed as a lack of faith in Switch.

The worst thing they could do in the next year is announce a new handheld.

Can people stop saying the Switch is a portable first now?

Also I hope this means that we'll get a 3ds replacement too. But I suppose that'll depend on how the Switch does.

Depends how you feel about this statement. You can probably find Reggie saying any number of similar things over years that were not true.

I'm sure it will be "supported" through 2017, but lets keep in mind Nintendo's support for the 3DS has already been very limited for a while now.

Game support will obviously slow down but I don't think this is a new DS-GBA situation here.
DS launch price was $150 while Switch is $300 (in competition to a $80 2DS). That's not really a pricepoint where parents will mass buy it for their kids when the new Pokémon game comes out.

I expect the 3DS to eventually get replaced by a cheaper produced "entry-level" Switch model that is lower priced.

3ds has still software lined up probably + devs un Japan won't simply walk away from that user base until Switch picks up the necessary sales momentum.
