Digital Foundry: MK8Deluxe and Splatoon 2 Switch Analysis

https://youtu.be/2r2-nVHZ_bQ

The repeated frame glitch from MK8 is gone! Also a full 1080/60 when docked.

Splatoon 2 is 720/60 in both modes tho.

Spla2oon is still a while from launch though, so that will likely change. John notes that it is unlikely to be a performance issue considering it runs at 720/60 in portable mode.

Probably they still haven't optimized the docked version in Splatoon, but I'm sure they'll di more than 720p when docked.

MK8 looks already good.

Already bought all the DLC for MK8, but 1080p 60 docked + 720p60(same as wii U) in my pocket might get me to double dip.

Some speculation DF made during their Zelda video was that Nintendo is likely focusing first on getting the games to run on the portable mode and then working on the docked mode.
Would explain Splatoon, Mario, and Xenoblade since they're farther off.

Man, they gotta' fix that Splatoon 2 resolution when docked.
I guess, the workflow for Nintendo is to get the game working at 720p and than later make changes to get 1080p running. Having a good performance in Handheld-Mode should always be the priority.

I would had done that if I can access it :p
Oh okay. Basically every 64 frames a duplicate frame is thrown up, in any mode with CPU participants. So for example instead of getting 60 unique frames a second, every two second period you are shown 119 unique frames so it always felt like there was a bit of stutter. :)

Heck, that actually makes a lot of sense.

Splatoon has simply no docked mode at this time. I expect the final build to be 900p or 1080p.

Exactly. Didn't DF already note that 1) Direct feed for docked mode was only permitted for MK8 and 2) No difference whatsoever between docked/portable mode for Splatoon2?

While it makes sense, I do think it's going to disappoint a lot of people who use this primarily as a home console. If Nintendo is pushing that side of things as much as they are, I think it's reasonable to expect that their games are optimized to look and run as well as possible in docked mode.

Yeah I had a feeling splatoon was low. It looked jaggy or blurry in the trailer while Mario Kart looked clean. Guess it is 720p when docked for splatoon 2 :(

Splatoon 2 is coming summer so plenty of time to get it up to 1080, i'll be there day one eitherway. Not 100% i want to double dip on MK8 yet.

Can't believe I will play Mario Kart 8 on a handheld system at 720p/60fps.

It's just amazing. Can't wait!!

Yeah that's pretty nice, but playing Smash on it will be even better!

That's the main reason I didn't get a 3DS. The screen would be way too small for me to fully enjoy.

Yeah they probably just finished the handled mode for Splatoon 2. Hopefully they're able to pull a 1080p60fps for this one.

I hope Splatoon will hit higher resolutions later in development.

The game looks almost exactly the same as the first one, I assume there's a few bell and whistles more, but still.

Don't give up hope yet. We're at least 6 months from launch. I can't think of any reason why the resolution wouldn't at least increase a tiny bit while docked. Well, I mean, I guess they could be doing it for multiplayer parity or something, but I really doubt that.

Wow. I didn't know such thing exist. Good thing my eyes are not as hardcore as other people.

Hopefully it's not "at least 6 months" :p

I'm hoping it'll be closer to 5. June would be nice.

Good to know that splatoon undocked is 720p, so it looks like that thay didn't optimize the docked performance yet.
