Funimation Films will open Makoto Shinkai's animated blockbuster and global pop culture hit ”Your Name." in North American theaters on April 7, 2017. The film will be released in both English-language Dub as well as the original Japanese-language with English subtitles.
Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai (”5 Centimeters Per Second," ”The Garden of Words"), ”Your Name." has already received critical acclaim and commercial success overseas, dominating the burgeoning Asian box office to quickly become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time released in Japan – behind only ”Spirited Away," ”Titanic" and ”Frozen." ”Your Name." has also since become the second highest-grossing Japanese animated film released in Japan, surpassing legendary works from Hayao Miyazaki including ”Princess Mononoke," ”Howl's Moving Castle" and ”Ponyo."

Yo, that movie is pretty darn fantastic.

Very happy it seems to have done well in the Dublin cinema circuit, Lighthouse kept bringing it back.

I'm kind of excited to see how the dub turns out.
Mike Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh essentially co-directed each other in the leading roles.

Hope Funimation makes it as big a release as it's Dragonball movies. I hope I can just go to my local theater and see this

Can anyone give me a synopsis? That image isn't giving me much hope that this is actually better than the Ghibli greats.

It looks like it's leaning a bit too hard into the "High School Drama" anime trope.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

Watched the trailer. Looked like Freaky Friday.

I'm sure that's woefully underselling it, but the trailer definitely didn't blow me away or present any crazy unique concepts.

Here's a link to the dub trailer if you want a general idea.

The general premise is this... two teenagers - Mitsuha, a girl living in a rural Japanese village and Taki, a boy living in urban Tokyo - are generally discontent with their lots in life. They begin to dream about each other's lives and, initially, think that it's something they've manufactured in their subconscious until they realize that they're switching places with one another.

Trailers are being intentionally obtuse because to give away more would really lessen the impact of seeing how the film unfolds.
Let me assure you, it is by no means as straightforward as it's making itself out to be.

Country girl, unsatisfied with her life in the country swaps bodies with a boy that lives in Tokyo.

Way more to it than that, and honestly the body swap trope isn't actually a major focus.

The trailer doesn't sell the film very well - they don't show much on purpose, the less you know going in the better.

Movie blew me away, would love to watch it again.

Finally, about damn time.

Knowing how my luck plays out, I'm gonna have to drive at least two hours north or south to see it.

Loved 5 Centimeters per Second, but haven't seen his other work. Hyped to see this.

Also, while looking around online at Your Name and Makoto Shinkai, I saw that 5 Centimeters per Second is FINNALY coming out on Blu-Ray here in the US. Thank goodness.

I saw it last month and thought it was pretty good. Not fantastic and IMO other recent movies like Wolf Children were more my thing, but I'm glad this is doing well.

I'm sure it's great but I swear I hear "just became the highest grossing [insert anime, foreign, or domestic] film in Japan history" every couple of years.

You can't have heard that about anime because this took the record from a film that came out in 2001.

Non-anime film? Sure. Frozen did that, after all.
But in terms of Japanese animation, Your Name is breaking records set by Spirited Away... and that film is 15 1/2 years old.

Yeah, its almost like its an anime/anime movie made in the last 15 years lol.

But its a very good movie. Trailer undersold the movie like a lot said. Even here in Japan the same thing happened, it was after tons of word of mouth that people realized "oh hey there is a bit more to this story." The general plot of boy and girl swapping bodies is more or less the first act and becomes more interesting from there. Also its definitely not a high school drama, very little of it is actually in or about high school.

I know the Ghibli riders are hard up to denounce anything that could be good, as good, or better than their precious films (even though Ghibli is filled with anime tropes too) but I would say this is definitely in the column of great anime films too, not like anything gets removed from the list of awesome movies if one gets added lol... though I'm starting to think most people assume life is just a top 10 list forever haha.

Amazing film. Didn't manage to catch in Cinemas while it was showing here in the UK, but luckily it was one of the in-flight movie choices when I was travelling to Japan a couple of weeks ago. So good.

Normally I would've watched this already online but since everybody says it's so great I've been waiting for ages for a theater release. I'm not expecting it to be miyazaki good but hopefully it leaves me less angry than 5cm per second( talking about the ending and last segment. First 2 were cool)
