Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Launch trailer, JP boxart, March 3, 2017

So, am I'm the only one believing that we'll get a flying mount? Maybe Kass?

I really don't think there's going to be a flying mount. Flying invalidates travel most of the time and very few games are able to use it well (like Gravity Rush or SM64). Open worlds that demand exploration are utterly picked apart by flying systems unless it's at the very end of the game.

Also a piano Transcription of the trailer theme. I have it on loop because it's so good.

Its all right. It'll be great when I'm proven right but that'll be launch day so I'll stop posting until then. :)

See, the thing about us potentially being wrong is that that would perfectly fine, because we unexpectedly get to play as Zelda, and have that be a huge, amazing surprise for us. Everyone wins.

Do what you do. Luckily for me this is one game where I'll be playing it right away so I'll miss any and all immediate backlash online.

Why not? I'd be more than willing to see what they'd do with a playable Zelda/Sheik for example.

Hell, I'm with people that want a female Link (No choosing your gender, go big or go home), or even Linkle as well; good amount of storytelling potential there imo

I have no qualms about playing as Link "forever", he's cool, but they could at least change things up every now and then...

Bolded is what I agree with. Personally I'd rather just stick with Link as he is (well not exactly as he is as I would like it if they were able to give him more personality and character instead of just being a blank "hero" slate), but if they are going with something different I would much much much rather a set female Link over a choose your own character.
And would still prefer a new playable female character or playing as one of the already established ones over that, but a "make your own" is defiantly a distant last place to all of that.

I always thought Linkle would be cool after reading her backstory. A girl who thinks she's the hero, when it's like nah... You're just a normal girl. Having a story along a theme of "fake it until you make it" sounds appealing on paper to me.

I have been wanting to play a Zelda game where you aren't the chosen sword of the gods, where the gods haven't blessed your passing, doors don't open for you, and you don't get to use the mythical items of the hero. All while being aware of that fact. So yeah, that would work for me as well.

Why is this such a sought-after feature? Again, I'm only asking because I've never even remotely thought about that being something I would ever want in a Zelda game.

Skyward Sword would've been a prime candidate for switching characters. Half of the story happens while Link is not there. There could've been a lot of opportunities to introduce both story and action not only revolving around Link. Other games have certainly successfully switched characters to narrate different story arcs.

"It's always been this way" is the absolute weakest possible argument to argue for maintaining the status quo.

Yea that was weird.
They should do a mega remake of Skyward Sword that rectifies that lol...

That would only be a portion of the narrative - some of the responses here sound like they want an entire Zelda game where you play as Princess Zelda, or another unknown female protagonist. All I'm asking is, why is this such an issue?

If there was a Zelda game - perhaps a sequel to Breath of the Wild, or even a spin-off where you played as Princess Zelda, a female Gerudo or a female Sheika - I would be all over it :)

To be honest this doesn't even feel real that it's coming so soon after such a long wait. For it to be little over a month away is insane.

It's a choice between this and Mass Effect for me in March, and I've seen nothing in Andromeda that would sway me towards it. As somebody said, Nintendo polish. I'm expecting the best open world game in a while.

It always feels like this with AAA, high-profile game releases. You go through all those years of hype after seeing/hearing about the initial reveal, dissecting trailers looking for info, upgrades or downgrades and scouring the internet and Neogaf for news about *this game* you just couldn't live without.

It's at this point, you are just in disbelief at how close it is. It's part of the hype and excitement process and I love it!

It'd be something different, offers storytelling potential that may not be available if we stuck with Link (like Linkle for example), some just want representation through a playable female protagonist/female Link in a popular franchise that actually has the lore to back it up, etc. etc.

I don't think any Zelda fan minds too much about us playing as Link (in mainline games) possibly forever. We're all used to it after all. But for some, including myself, we certainly wouldn't mind them mixing it up. It'd be as clear a signal as you can possibly get that they're trying something different, at the very least.

What is Linkle? Honestly, that's something I've never heard of until this thread.

Xeneobalde chronicles do it very well (but too late imo) and the guy behind it helped for this game. So i can see it happen because of the structure of the game claiming there is no path and order to do things in it.

So true. I can't believe it's so soon. For me it's not just about the 2014 reveal or Iwata's 2013 announcement, this is the next big vision for the series since Ocarina of Time. Every Zelda after OOT just expanded on that formula, but BOTW is the real Zelda revolution. It's the final 3D envisioning of the original. An open world with so much freedom.

I feel like I've waited for this game since 1998. This might end up my most wanted game ever. It's going to be Aunoma's legacy.

That's exactly how I feel. I remember the original "The Legend of Zelda" when it first released on the Nintendo Entertainment System and how much I loved it [I also remember how pissed off I was that I didn't know about the "holding the reset button while pushing the power button before taking the game out procedure" - because I was at Death Mountain and I lost all of my save data - but that's besides the point].

This is exactly what I feel Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma have been waiting for their entire lives and I can't wait to see what they've given us!!

This is the first time I've ever been this hyped for a Zelda game before. I was excited for Wind Waker cause of the visual style, and I'm definitely a fan of the series (I own all the console games since Wind Waker though WW is also the only one I've finished. Finished Link's Awakening too but that's not a console Zelda) but I am like, frothing for this game. I got actual chills and felt goosebumps on my face when they played the newest trailer at the Switch conference. It looks like a masterpiece. It seems like some kind of beautiful epic movie but it's not a movie, it's a game we get to play that will be longer than any movie ever could be. I am super hyped for this. I just hope I can afford to actually keep the Switch+BotW preorders I have.

Do we think Link is gonna get his classic green tunic in this game at any time, have they hinted at it at all? I love the blue outfit he has but I can just imagine if he does get the green tunic that it'll be like THE most hype moment of all time.

Aonuma has been very cryptic about the green outfit, saying there's a reason it's absent, and basically that we'll have to wait and see.

If it's not in the game at all, I would be shocked...

I for one, will be pissed off beyond belief if it's not in the ultimate Zelda game.

Just imagine, the Green "Hero's Tunic" is not in the ultimate Zelda game?!?

That's something that would be considered haunting.

It's going to be the first Zelda I'll play with surround sound and I'm very much looking forward to it. From short tests of WindWaker HD, where the rear speakers have the waves softly crashing behind you, I hope they've put some effort into it.

It's almost a guarantee that Nintendo has put forth a tremendous effort on the Switch surround sound of this game.

From what IGN has said, the Switch version of Breath of the Wild has better environmental sounds - which means with surround sound you'll be immersed even more in the open-air atmosphere.

Pity I'm going ot play on the WiiU. :p Still, I wouldn't expect to be the surround sound a slouch either.

Ah ok, so it's totally gonna be in the game and there's gonna be some kind of mega bitchin sequence involving it, nice

I didn't realize it when I posted but there's actually a thread on the front page dedicated to this very question

I wonder if we'll actually see it get destroyed, that would certainly be going against conventions o:

4 main dungeons seems pretty clear at this point. They obviously correspond to the 4 big mech bosses (lizard, bird, two more), and defeating each one will rather obviously lower/deactivate the 4 pillars surrounding Hyrule Castle. So your main quest is to finish those four areas and dungeons, kill the four bosses, and then enter the castle to face Ganon.

But I think the dungeons will have a lot of lead-up to them, similar to MM. And on top of that you've of course got the 100 mini-dungeon shrines. Plus side-quests, collectathons, etc. There will be enough stuff to do in this game. Personally, I'm actually rather happy that the main dungeons are kept at a reasonable number given how much else there will be to do.

The music in this trailer is incredible - and I absolutely LOVE the way it builds up to this part.

It's spectacular. This will easily be the Zelda game with the best music ever. SS had a few outstanding tracks, but what we've heard from this is just on another level. Although we haven't actually heard much in-game music, seems to mostly be environmental sound. But I hope this amazing music is not only for the trailers, but that we will actually get to hear it at important points in the game.

recent promotional art suggests there are more than 4 pillars around hyrule castle and those previous assumptions were based on paticular perspectives or vantage points

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.

A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time only had three dungeons... ;)

Game looks gorgeous but the combat looks very stiff. Lacks fluidity and easily seems the weakest part of this game, sadly.

Felt quite natural to me, but I will say that it will be as fluid as is your personal approach to encounters. The player has more options than ever in their initiating combat, and while their are still absolutely context sensitive actions/reactions that need to be timed properly to execute, the combat isnt built around too many specific canned animations from button prompts (Wind Waker/Twilight Princess)

I'm trying to figure out what you mean by this and I'm not getting it. Pls don't be mad.
The overworld only showed and contained three major dungeons before the "endgame" at Hyrule Castle. Then an entirely new overworld opened up with way more dungeons.

You know what it is...

It's just going to be a remix of Skyward Sword. x___x
First Hyrule is attacked and Zelda does her girly run. Link and Zelda meet up and travel together. Zelda then decides to start purifying herself and wearing the white/holy dress so that she can make a strong seal and hold the Calamity at bay. She'll be sacrificing herself but whatever. Link helps guide her to all the areas with Hylia's statue, to pray and get prepared. (Which is also where we'll find the flashback prompts in the present)

At the end of their journey they're attacked by guardians. something crucial gets ruined, Link and Zelda run for it. Link lets go of Zelda's hand. Zelda has a break down. Link is attacked and badly injured/can't move. The Master Sword is weakened and the guardian's pointing a laser at Link's head. Zelda uses her magic to lessen the Guardians next hit. Then, in the next scene Zelda struggles to pull Link up.

Link dies shortly after from injuries? Zelda does the rest of her preparation by herself. :C

In the present day Zelda is probably in a piece of amber holding the seal of Calamity Ganon somehow. When you kill the boss she'll be awakened and everything will be great.

Probably. I think that's as likely as it can get. Hopefully those flashbacks have gameplay involved. Even if it's minimal, it would make me happy.

That seems pretty likely. I'd add that I think Zelda's "open your eyes" voice sounds quite a bit different from past Zelda, so I really wouldn't be surprised if she's an old woman in the present. Maybe not though.

It would be cool if
after you defeat Ganon and rescue Zelda, instead of the game ending you can now run around in the overworld and do side quests as Zelda. Or start a NG+ as Zelda.

I'm not asking this to cause any controversy, I just honestly want to understand why - in a "The Legend of Zelda" game - anyone would want to play as someone other than Link??

Why is this such a sought-after feature? Again, I'm only asking because I've never even remotely thought about that being something I would ever want in a Zelda game.

I think the first problem was allowing Zelda and Sheik to be playable in Super Smash Bros Melee back in 2001. That was the first time I was ever able to play as a female Zelda character and I liked it a lot. Nintendo should've never done this. It was their first mistake.

Then you have the fact that Tingle and Peach have their own games but for some reason Zelda gets no love. You have Koizumi saying Mario's not in outer space anymore because they want girls to play and girls don't like space. (But I loved Mario Galaxy Koizumi...) Then you have Peach and Rosalina being playable in Super Mario 3D World and it being pretty awesome. Then you have Aonuma talking about breaking conventions and asking whether or not "Zelda has to be a princess." Then you have the BoTW teaser leaving everyone confused about Link's gender for several months. Then you have Aonuma feeding the fires with him refusing to give a clear answer. Then you also have Hyrule Warriors where the majority of the cast is female...

Since 2006 (right after TP, when the Valley of the Flood rumors started going crazy) I've noticed fans asking for female Link or playable Zelda more and more. I can't say exactly what caused the surge...but it probably has to do with fans feeling it coming and wanting it badly...

If Nintendo didn't want this to happen, they should've never allowed a female playable character in any of their games ever. They accidentally started to give people hope and now they've backed themselves into a corner. xD

If Nintendo had just made it completely hopeless and never allowed any female characters to be playable in any of their games and had shut down BoTW rumors from the get-go...we wouldn't be in this awkward spot.

Now it feels like if Nintendo doesn't go for it in some way, it will be a let down. From 2006 to 2014 I was on the don't change Link at all side of the argument. I didn't want a female playable character at all, but after all the weird teasing, I'm now on the list of people who would be embarrassed if they don't break that particular convention at all.

That seems pretty likely. I'd add that I think Zelda's "open your eyes" voice sounds quite a bit different from past Zelda, so I really wouldn't be surprised if she's an old woman in the present. Maybe not though.

What if Link and Zelda do the horizontal happy dance in the past and in the present the girl who wakes you is your great granddaughter...

And then she's playable!
xD

Have been completely out of the loop regarding the Switch, but I just jumped on board and pre-ordered one.

I want to get this game at launch... will it be downloadable from the store digitally on launch day, or do I need a boxed copy?

Thanks.

EDIT - also, any major pros and cons of each approach?

I can't imagine why they wouldn't have it available for digital download.

It'll be available on the eShop and at retail. Just note that the eShop version is about 16gb, if I recall correctly. So that'll take up about half of the internal 32 GB. You can always buy a MicroSD card of any size to up your capacity though.

I definitely feel that, when you're playing a game, if a character actually speaks to you, with a voice, then you do have a deeper connection with them. You get a clearer sense of who that character is, and what they're all about.
In terms of whether or not we'd considered using voice acting in the past, we definitely have thought about it. We weren't able to do it, though. This time, we could. Now, why we could this time, but not before, is to do with a certain system we've used in the game. But I can't really tell you any more about what that system is, because it'd kind of be giving too much away about the game. You'll just have to play it, and see how the voice acting fits in for yourself.

Interesting quote from Aonuma's interview about Voice acting. Does anyone have a clue what he could mean? Maybe it's just an excuse for the fact that they didn't want to use VA so far, but if there is more to it and a reason why it's used in BOW it could be interesting I guess.

Anybody figure out the name of the flower in the trailer shot and in the logo?

I think the in-game name for it might be... Breath of the Wild. :p

The file size is between 13 and 14GB if I remember correctly, so it would take up close to half of your internal storage. Also loading times from the game card might actually be faster than from an SD card, if that's where your game is stored. Probably not faster than the internal flash memory though.

I'm pretty sure it's (heavy spoilers)
about the "recovered memories" cutscenes.
Could be something else I guess.

I can't agree with that. Combat might not be as deep as say dedicated action games, but it does seem to get a lot right with the various weapon properties, enemy AI, enemy layouts, tighter durability mechanics than other similar games, enemy hit reactions, the ability to smoothly transition between melee and ranged combat with both having their own set of in depth tricks and mechanics, the flurry rush animations looking awesome, enemies hitting hard enough. The ability to apply physics into combat and so on.
