NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

That's a great list. I'm glad UC4 won just for all the shit it gets around here, although it wasn't my #1.

Now to make time to try out The Witness and Deus Ex... maybe this summer !

The top of the chart isn't really that interesting though. It seems to align pretty closely with critical consensus and sales performance. I mean it's not like The Order is #1. There's some slant in the games enthusiast "core" community as a whole towards single player big budget games for sure but that's not a Gaf thing. It'd be weirder if it didn't align that way.

Its not weird from a critic consensus (most critics are the exact same people who are on GAF. I mean a lot of them are actual members of this forum) but its a bit weird from a broader demo range. DOOM and The Last Guardian being so high are bit weird if you are looking at the market as neither were exactly huge sellers though DOOM has done pretty well for itself.

UC4 win though isn't surprising from any range. It did very well in both sales and consumers opinions. Its honestly a great Top 10

I don't think Gaf is reflective of the greater gaming market, which is precisely why DOOM and TLG did so well.

I'm just pleasantly surprised TLG was received so well after all these years (same with FFXV)

I wonder how many complaints we'll get about Nintendo games dominating the list next year when Zelda and Mario run 1-2.

(Though I do see merit to the argument that a large amount of posters here remember SNES, PS1, or PS2 as their first console that got them into gaming, which explains why so many games from those ecosystems consistently chart highly here. That doesn't mean that many of those games aren't also good games.)

It's nice to see Dark Souls III get some appreciation. Seems like it's been virtually ignored by the gaming press GOTY lists.

I'm not sure anyone is arguing that Sony and Nintendo don't make great games. They make super high quality games. I think the only point has been that invested Sony / Nintendo fans make up the largest portion of this forum.

Yeah, 2016 was not the best year for horror games. I usually have at least two on my Top 10 list, but zero this year. :(

2017 though...I have a good feeling about it.

2016 was a great year for horror games no one played but were fantastic.

-cries-

Though INSIDE and Oxenfree not being counted as a horror games is some real bullshit. :I

its not like Neogaf stands out or wait....
the whole world is Sony Bias i guess -

There are a couple of reasons I want Zelda winning the 2017 GotY. The first is because all the early impressions and footage make it seem like an absolutely incredible game. I absolutely can't wait to play it.

The second reason is to dispel this flawed narrative perpetuated by many (including mods! sigh...) of this allegedly all-encompassing, mighty, and indestructible "Sony bias."

People believe Mario is coming out this year?

Even if you assume they didn't start working on Odyssey until after Captain Toad was finished, by November it'll have been just under 3 years since then. Plus Nintendo will want to have a big name like Mario out for the holiday season. They won't delay it.

Every wrong instance should be pointed out. This is a work in progress with so many hundreds of games.

Also some games got a later release so they appear exclusive, despite only being a late port.

Great work as always.

But man, after those adjustments one could think the XB1 is a last gen platform lol
XB1 Game of the Year:
1. Raiden V = 4 points, 1 honorable mention

But obviously the publisher ranking will still acknowledge the MS-exclusives.

I think Zelda if its good will probably dominate next year's votes. Which judging by how incredible that last trailer was I'll have no problem with at all. Only things that may impact it imo are Red Dead 2 (if it releases) or Persona 5. I don't think Mario will be number 2, but you never know.

Looking at the results more, once again I don't really understand what the point of these genre categories are if they're not going to be made more distinct. Putting Uncharted 4, Watch_Dogs 2 and Oxenfree in one category is bizarre. Sticking Furi into a general shooter category is just strange. Mother Russia Bleeds is simply not a fighting game. And giving Rocket League the Xbox One GOTY seems to strip any meaning out of that as well.

Zelda will win. 100 %.

It won the most anticpated, too.

Eh, I just think The Last of Us, Bayonetta 2, Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 are pretty awesome games. I don't see any poor choices there even if Bloodborne is the only one I voted #1, the others were all in my Top 3. I see it more as NeoGAF having pretty good taste rather than being biased.

MGS4 is the only GAF GOTY winner that I look at and really shake my head. The love for that game is one thing I will never get, and that's okay. Even with that aberration, I think GAF has a much better track record than the industry consensus during the same stretch.

But I mean, it still has to live up to expectations and deliver on them. I don't think Zelda gets handed the GOTY because it's Zelda and its an exclusive. If it ends up being the caliber of Skyward Sword, which means its really good but not great, it won't win and it shouldn't.

I said this just above, but yeah, some of the categorizations make no sense, or feel too restricting.

Being a horror enthusiast, my focus is the fact RE4 is the "top horror game" of the year, despite the fact a number of horror games scored high above it, not least of which being INSIDE and Oxenfree, but as they're put under other categories, they're not counted as horror games, despite completely being horror games. But they were both put under adventure for some reason, but not counted towards horror.

Despite the fact almost every horror game has some adventure element, the whole genre was founded on adventure game elements.

TLG is basically targeted right at this community so I get that one, but isn't Doom in the millions? I figure once you get into the multimillions it's all sort of enough.

There's no question the market is moving towards service games, but there are still enough non-service games that they can dominate charts in core communities.

Biggest surprise was seeing The House in Fata Morgana, an incredibly niche Visual Novel game chart to Number 1 for High Quality Award and number 4 in the Mobile Games category as well. Guess it really is that good. I should really get around to playing it. Just that 2017 is so packed so far already.

RE4 winning "Best Horror Game 2016" is a thing of beauty though, hahaha.

On that note, I wouldn't put Dragon Quest Builders into the "RPG" category either, that's more of the "Puzzle" game variety isn't it?

Pfft course UC4 was going to win.:p

Nah, congrats to the games at the top, and I am happy to see DOOM and Overwatch in the top 3. Both are amazing shooters.

And lol at RE4 getting horror of the year. That is kind of sad.

This list would be a lot more useful if it was a percentage of votes instead of number, since a different amount of people vote each time.

Zelda's advantage is being on two platforms and Nintendo-only owners literally having nothing else to play so no votes are wasted on the big multi-platform titles.

I still think Red Dead and Mass Effect can take it though, depending on how good they are.

However, the biggest contender is Horizon IMO. Unless it's secretly bad. Personally it also seems to be the most interesting of all those games as it's a new IP and a new setting.

Such a shitty year for horror :/

Oh yeah, DOOM has done solid I agree. I guess just more than anything the stuff that throws me off is how low some major titles like BF1 are in comparison to some of these smaller games. Just seems weird.

Honestly GAF did really good, the top 10 here is very similar to mine in a lot of ways, and those I didn't vote for I'm sure I'll love, I just didn't get a chance to either play them, or play enough of them for it to make my list.

The fact Titanfall 2 made top 10 really was the thing that made me happy. I was blown away when I finally got around to playing / beating it a couple weeks back. And Overwatch Top 3? Ya done good GAF

I dunno, it seems like a sandboxy ARPG. That's not a perfect fit, but it's better than some of the other genre fits like the Adventure category which is nigh useless.

Seriously, the top 3 are solid as fuck. Any of them could have been #1 and I would have been fine with it.

Honestly, I'd give both Uncharted 4 and Overwatch #1 this year.

Welp, I forgot the deadline was earlier today and didn't manage to write about my list. Anyways, here's my top 10:

1 - The Last Guardian
2 - Hitman
3 - Doom
4 - Titanfall 2
5 - Rhythm Heaven Megamix
6 - Overwatch
7 - Enter The Gungeon
8 - Superhot
9 - Hyper Light Drifter
10 - The Witness

Honorable Mentions:

Stardew Valley, Uncharted 4, Overcooked, Inside, Pony Island, Abzû, Wild Guns Reloaded & Event 0.

It's an amazing year for gaming.

Funny how SFV won fighter of the year here and that game gets new hate threads every week lmao. The saying that people hate SF but yet refuse to play any other fighting game rings so true.

Great work as always.
Thanks but I don't do the GOTY Awards!

If I was supreme leader of GAF GOTY then we wouldn't have platform categories and traditional genres!

Every year we have discussions about what genre a game fits in or why the list of games in a particular category are so unlike each other or why does game X count for platform Y but not Z.

So really, what is the ruling on how games got counted for platform awards?

For Xbox One:
1. Rocket League (Multiplatform, Windows/PS4/X1)
2. Stranger of Sword City (Multiplatform, 360/Windows/Vita/X1)
3. NHL 17 (Multiplatform, PS4/X1)
4. The Walking Dead: Michonne (Multiplatform, Windows/OS X/PS3/PS4/360/X1/iOS/Android)
5. Raiden V (X1 Exclusive)

PS Vita
1. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (Cross-gen, PS4/PSV)
2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (Cross-gen, PS3/PSV)
3. Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book (Cross-platform, PS3/PSV/PS4)
5. Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (PSV Exclusive)

I don't see how a list with 4 multiplatform titles for X1 makes even the remotest sense without games like Forza or Gears.

Such a shitty year for horror :/

It was an amazing year for horror games!

Just apparently most no one but me on GAF played them, or apparently even heard of them. And it was a great year for games, and more of GAF are console players and no PC gamers, and many oriented towards genres that are not horror, so... -sighs-

In a GAF voted list, the horror games of 2016 didn't stand a chance since there were almost no big horror games released in 2016 on consoles or that got big mainstream attention.

Though I still argue INSIDE and Oxenfree not being counted as horror games is grade A bullshit.

So glad Overwatch didn't win.

That's this year's super popular (gaming) thing for me that I had zero interest in and did not get why it was so extremely more popular than other mp games. Not doubting the quality mind you.

Well technically, that would be Pokemon Go but that's a different audience of course.

Otherwise I'm ok with the top 10.
This might actually be the year in which I had the most top 10 titles in my own top 10 :eek:

5/10:
Uncharted 4
Doom
The Last Guardian
Final Fantasy XV
The Witness

And I JUST started playing Hitman and TF2 as well. Only Inside I already excluded from the top10 as I wasn't that flashed by it TBH.

Which ones would you recommend the most?

I think the only one I played was Layers Of Fear

Well for starters, apparently games like INSIDE and Oxenfree were counted as adventure games, not horror games since they did a one genre per game thing which is dub for horror since horror almost always attaches itself to other genres, like comedy.

Anyways, here was my ballot for the 2016 indie game voting for GAF. I didn't get to play every horror game in 2016, been busy and there was a LOT, but a few I can name:

Funnily enough, my top 10 games of the year list perfectly works here. I even listed five honorable mentions!

I have been busy this year, so haven't had a chance to play even half the horror releases this year yet, especially in the last few months, but it's been a very good year. My list as it is now:

01. IMSCARED ;
I don't know why this particular title has stuck with me so much this year. It's a pixely 3D horror game where you need to get all the achievements to win, and solve cryptic puzzles in a strange world. The antagonist is interesting, and the game has some fun twists and turns. But something about it has made it truly special to me. Maybe I just had an amazing unique experience, or something about it spoke to me personally. It did scare me a few times, yet I find it absolutely charming. I played a lot of clever things this year, but I enjoyed its cleverness the most. And something about its morbid world speaks to me. Anyway, I thought it was the best thing I played this year in what was a great year for horror and creativity in general.

02. OneShot ;
Only non-horror game on my list. I hope this title catches on, it deserves it. It pre-dates Undertale & Pony Island for a metagame, being originally a freeware 2014 game. It got remade and now is over twice as long. With simply one of the most likable protagonists in gaming in a charming, but sad, yet strangely hopeful dying world, you the player must work with protagonist Niko to either save him, or this world. Hard to talk about without spoiling, but quite the experience with some good but challenging puzzles.

03. DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark ;
I loved the original DreadOut, but this I think may be a better game. A spin-off from the original, join Linda in a world of mirrors as she combats unique and interesting ghosts to find her escape. Spkit between eight selectable worlds from within a hub, each with 2-3 ghosts to vanquish, what makes it are the unique ghosts full of creativity and well-done execution that shows a similar but maybe even greater genius that these developers from Indonesia have to bring to the table. Decididly somewhat oldschool, but also something truly new and unique to horror. Some of the ghosts and encounters have stuck with me.

04. INSIDE;
With excellent atmosphere in a haunting and cold world, INSIDE joins a nameless boy who treks frodm farmland to city to underground lakes to get inside... clever puzzle bits, and amazing animation which helps gives a detailed look on a mostly silent world. Ending is fun but didn't blow me away like most.

05. Oxenfree ;
80s horror narrative with some of the best writing and well executed dialogue chains in any game to date. With a dynamic relationship system and actually likable characters, Oxenfree has an interesting world and good atmosphere, but may be best remembered for its writing.

06. Virginia ;
I love Twin Peaks and X-Files, and this obvious love letter managed to craft its own experience despite obvious inspirations. A story with well done symbolism, excellent music, and manages to be engaging and moving without a single line of dialogue (funnily enough in contrast to Oxenfree).

07. Sylvio Remastered ;
I've come to like this game more and more over time. You play as a girl who uses a cassette recorder to communicate with the dead who goes to an abandoned amusement park to learn more about a tragic incident that happened years ago. It's a quiet, slow game that has 80s syth styled music, an interesting color scheme, and a slowburn horror story that has stuck with me. Very unique, and in its own way very haunting.

08. The Count Lucanor ;
The Legend of Zelda as a horror game featured on fairytales. Charming world, twisted characters, fun puzzles, interesting enemies, and multiple endings with a number of secrets helped make this morbid curiosity one of my favorite things I played this year.

09. Pony Island ;
You play an endless runner game which you find out early on was literally made by the Devil. And the fact that's not simplest and earliest twist should say a lot. Interesting and fun experience.

10. Near Death ;
Everyone got so focused on FireWatch, this game which is a bit similar but I think far superior got unfortunately largely overlooked. You star as a guy who is stranded in an arctic base during a nasty storm who must work to return home while in communication with someone at a nearby base. Has some light gameplay in its survival elements from the cold and weather, but its strong suits are its phenomenal atmosphere, art direction, and writing. It has maybe one of the best endings to a game I've experienced all year.

11. Dead Secret ;
Made by a new studio including Chris from the famous horror game sote, Chris' Survival-Horror Quest, it's a unique indie take on the classic point'n'click Clock Tower formula, but taking place in a first-person view (with VR support~). With an interesting rural farm setting, a Japanese masked killer, and an fascinating story (though lots of reading to fully get it), it absolutely charmed me this year.

12. Left Alone ;
It opens up with its weaknesses, but develops into one of the best mood pieces I've seen in a while. This game maybe more than any other unnerved me with sheer atmosphere and implication. Some moderate fun and challenging puzzles, and an interesting abandoned school in the woods setting.

13. Through The Woods ;
Atmospheric 'walking sim' third-person horror with some excellent atmosphere, exploration, and lush Nordic folklore to make an enchanting experience.

14. The Survey
One of the best P.T. clones ai've played, though it does just enough to become its own thing in my opinion. You receive a strange survey on your phone via an app you don't remember downloading when strange things begin to happen in your home. It was an enjoyabke romp, a few trips, but a worthwhile experience.

15. Dead End Road ;
The horror rogue-like driving game you never knew you wanted! With all sorts of weird events, multiple roads, towns to visit, upgrades, and a nowhere USA highway to reach Dead End Road, it can be addicting and charming in its uniqueness and details.

---

And there's some I really need to play, like Yomonawi and Last Door Season 2 (season 1 was amazing and underlooked).
