Looks really cool no doubt, but spending so much money on just the office when you're still years away from releasing your 1st product seems kinda vain

Jesus Christ, no expense spared for Kojima. The budget for Death Stranding + Kojima Productions must be enormous.

I feel like Sony don't give a single fuck though. This is all about sending a message. The game being profitable or not doesn't mean a damn thing

I sincerely hope Sony did not blow money on setting up this studio.

KP is not a 1st-party studio, they shouldn't be entitled to any WWS resources.
I think Kojima and his studio might lean towards Sony this gen because of this. Not completely but a high probabilty. So maybe from a business prospective this is building bridges with a future MM seller?

Unless Sony outright purchases KP. Which can still happen.

You think? I would not expect to see a Kojima game on any console but Sony's for the foreseeable future. This is a major investment not simply made out of goodwill.

I need to read up on this acquisition. So Sony gave Kojima unspecified funds to build an indie studio? That they don't own but have first rights to publishing?

Frankly it feels like Sony is giving Kojima anything he wants

Anecdotally, whenever we see a Sony face behind every first-party project, it's 99% of the time Shu Yoshida.

Which makes sense. He's president of first-party. His very job is portfolio management of first party investment. It doesn't matter if it's a Naughty Dog game or an XDev game.

But with Death Stranding/Kojima... Sony's face, the ones Kojima has meetings with... is Andrew House himself.

There is definitely the impression that this is a deal that is above even Shu's management of authority.

Indeed. It kind of feels like Sony basically gave Kojima a blank check to do whatever he wants. Just look at the actors alone he has involved with Death Stranding. Guillermo del Toro, Norman Reedus, and Mads Mikkelsen. That does not come cheap.

I really, truly, don't think Sony care about making a profit off of the deal with Death Stranding, similarly to situations like The Last Guardian. This is a statement piece through and through.

I appreciate it when first parties are willing to pursue prestige or niche titles that have no chance of turning a profit.

Agreed, it does seem what with all the exclusive games and DLC deals they've been doing lately, they are playing a much longer game in the hopes of keeping themselves on top.

Nice studio, i hope kojima productions makes a great game with death stranding.

But in the bbc interview:

"What I really want to avoid is, like you see in some games, characters with big breasts with no back story.

"If I make characters that at first glance might look like this then they'll have a deep background story to give a specific reason why."

ashamed of my word and deeds 2.0?

I'd have kept Quiet about that one.

I think it just them investing in the future of a (probably) major studio more than anything, Kojima has played a massive role in PlayStation's past and Sony want him to play 1 in it's future. I think it's easy for them to justify too, as Kojima as most likely made PlayStation 100 of millions (if not billions) over the years, with his games being massive console sellers for the platform.

To be fair outside of a few, he has a pretty good track record with female characters. Though Quiet and The B&B squad almost single handily void all them.

I can't wait to see how Death Stranding sells. Kojima has a very consistent record with 5 MGS games selling, I think 5-7 million each, all with a metacritic rating between 93-97.
I'm especially curious to see how it fares in comparison to whatever Konami releases under the Metal Gear name next.

No doubt, not to mention Sony themselves has openly stated on record they don't need all 1st party games to make a profit for it to be worth it to them. They like to put forward the idea they are willing to take risks and that they are focused on the core gamer.

Now, Death Stranding may move serious units and be highly profitable. But frankly I think that's secondary to Sony. They are more concerned with being able to openly talk about having the next game from Kojima exclusive and a new IP at that.

I think so too, it's definitely a move to hopefully get more from Kojima in the future too, and is pretty smart if it works. Of course it's a risky gamble as there's no guarantee he won't run the studio into the ground after a few years of truly being independent, but if it all works out they'll likely end up with multiple high quality exclusives and a great working relationship with a high quality studio, which could lead to more exclusives down the line, or at worse a great game, that'll probably sell best on their platform.

Based Kojima.

Is anyone else taking that amazing studio and the fact that Kojima is getting tight with master film directors like Del Toro and Winding Refn as a sign that Death Stranding will potentially be one of the most visionary games made in recent memory? Not to mention the trailers released so far...

Kojima is finally making a new IP and so far it looks more amazing, creative and ambitious than I imagined. Come to pappa NOW!

It looks all kinds of amazing, but to be honest the atmosphere doesn't look as warm and familiar as the Media Molecule place that inspired it.
