SplatoonJP twitter - details about voice chat and matchmaking with friends on Switch

Would be hilarious if it turns out optional.
Not quite "LOL FUCK Nintendo" when the fake controller surfaced though.

It would be "fuck you Nintendo you should've told us so we didn't shit on you!" Idk what to expect from Nintendo though. It's probably best to assume the worst so you can't go further down, but you can always go up lol.

I would imagine most peoples docks will be across the room from them.
I agree. I'm never plugging a headset into my Switch while it's docked. I don't sit close to a tv.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
There's nothing that says this is the only way to start games with friends, but the problem is lots of people are willing to believe Nintendo would do that. They need to be more clear about everything, though I guess this is a good first step.

Nintendo could have cleared up the issues on Day 1...instead they let us speculate a month before launch how their online will look like and what it will cost lol.

Why Nintendo don't just make a direct talking about online to explain everything? All of this is becoming more and more confusing and killing my interest for the console.

No jack on the controller mang

There's a jack in the Pro controller?
Seriously? Fucking hell now I'm even more confused.

My housemate wants to go halves on a switch and im desperately looking for a reason to say anything other than "absolutely not".

So in docked mode I'd have to plug my Sennheiser HD55s
shoutout to Gino for the recommendation, amazing headphones!!
into the docked switch to get game audio, or if I'm lucky, voice as well? That's madness.

This can't be right

I'm sorry but, even if performance was the case, wouldn't you prefer to sacrifice it to not have to mess with your phone while you have a switch in your hands?
I'm still baffled by the mistery about the in-game audio, as well.

How could this be beneficial in any way?

The other reason you mentioned could be easily implemented with parent controls.

If the number of users that use voice chat on the Switch is low, sacrificing performance for it would be a bad idea. I'm going to assume Nintendo are still oblivious to current gaming online trends or that they feel their user base will not use it enough (kids, casual gamers) to take the hit.

I'm with the camp that want it on the console and part of the UX, it's a huge disconnect and not great for me because I like to play my games and leave the phone in another room.

I'm going to assume it was to get the most out of the machine technically, with the assumption it is for kid safety, as there's no proof that parental controls are implemented well enough by parents.

Agreed... I'm not sure why we have more details about an app that won't launch until summer than we do about what the console can do by itself on day one. They're kind of shooting themselves in the foot by talking about that so soon.

I'm sure this will all be cleared up once we get a Direct that actually explains the system. I find it hard to believe the app is required for voice chat.

"Please don't criticize or mock Nintendo publicly."

Edit:
In all fairness, we've had a lot of threads that were full of "lol Nintendo" posts (regarding voice chat). It's kind of understandable to be annoyed by them.

These people should be annoyed by Nintendo though.

I really don't see how somebody would think that Reggie doesn't know what to communicate.

My bet is that Nintendo goes with the approach "This mandatory app will enhance so much your experience especially if we avoid telling you straight that it's mandatory"

Why Nintendo don't just make a direct talking about online to explain everything? All of this is becoming more and more confusing and killing my interest for the console.

Ideally they will in February. They need to discuss VC (if it exists) too.

No! No jack on the Pro controller or Joycon Grip. I don't know where that info came from.

If it's docked, the ONLY way you'll be able to chat + hear game audio is when Nintendo implements Bluetooth headset support.

That's what I though, hence the question. A lot of tough design concession to be made with the split handheld-console form factor.

They probably will. The vast majority of people aren't like GAF and going based on vague Japanese translations and interview snippets, and probably accept it's something that will be elaborated on later

Why do people keep asking "where will I hear the game sound when the Switch is docked"?

Wouldn't you hear it through the tv and your friends through your phone? Isn't that how it's done. I'm not sure unless I'm completely clueless lol.

Or do people want to hear friends and the game audio through one speaker be it the tv, their phone or a Bluetooth headset through the Switch?

Ah now I know where I remember you from :) Glad you like 'em too! Really enjoying my own pair as well.

And yeah, the voice chat/game audio thing is really confusing. I hope Nintendo presents a satisfying explanation/solution soon.

Yeah, normally your headphones have a single user-adjustable mix of game audio and chat audio.

People do realize this console comes out in a month, right? This is worse than E3 2013 when people questioned Microsoft about how the always-online checks and DRM would work and they didn't have their message straight yet.

So...Here's a question

If the Switch uses phones for voice chat, and the Switch has no headphone jack, how do you hear the game audio when you are using your headset?

When i read that the Switch supports audio from mics and headsets, i read that as the app is something that you need to use at first if you want voice chat, while they implement these features in the OS itself. The console also has bluetooth 4.1.

If vern is right there are 800MB of RAM reserved to the OS, so even if voice chat stuff ends up taking 80MB (which is about what Skype uses on W10... and it would be very weird if Nintendo's service uses the same amount, but let's go with the worst case scenario), there would still be 720MB for other stuff. The OS looks pretty basic, no way they need all that RAM just for pics and eShop.

After these functionalities are implemented in the OS, you can choose if you want to use the app on the smartphone or the app on the Switch itself, which is good, because for example sending messages will still be smoother via app, especially if you're playing docked. I think it will take some time to have these features properly implemented though. Just my two cents.

Yeah, I'm not sure if we have any info on what Bluetooth 4.1 is actually used for. Your theory begs the question though- why is it taking so long to implement basic OS features? Doesn't Nintendo now have DeNA to help with this process?

This is by far the dumbest thing about the Switch and frankly embarrassing.

It's also not confirmed to be mandatory. If it is I will completely agree.

Why wouldn't VC exist?

Because we haven't heard a peep about it. I doubt it won't exist, but it's a bit disappointing that we've yet to hear anything whatsoever official about it.

No, I'm pretty sure in docked mode you'd need to plug those headphones into your TV or amp, since the audio will be routed to the HDMI.

Seriously, folks shouldn't be doing fan theories on something that is out in a month. There is more speculation and uncertainty then when the thing was a rumor

The key similarity is that neither Microsoft nor Nintendo want to deviate from planned PR statements, that's quite different from not having your message straight. So far they've only talked about the app, which is leading people to assume information they haven't talked about for the console OS. They really should have just waited for all this app talk.

But... to play devil's advocate on my own topic. Starting with the console OS would then probably lead to questions about things the app covers.

I really don't know, but i also don't know why it took a year to speed up the Wii U OS loading times, or why it took so long for Sony and Nintendo to implement something that was already used in the OS of their previous machines (folders), or why you still can't change your user id on PSN.

I maintain that this app nonsense is realllllllllly fucking dumb. They need to be working on OS level alternative, even if it's not ready for the launch of this thing that is somehow not ready for launch.

They likely will be. They haven't talked about the OS and UI in general yet. They did before the Wii U launched so it's likely coming. This Splatoon info isn't actually any different from what we've heard before but we ultimately need to see what Nintendo has planned in action.

Worse cast scenario is this.

You play online with no voice chat. Which is what you experienced on the Wii U. What you likely experience on the PS4, XBO, and PC when you don't bother to hock up a headset or go into the options and turn off voice chat. Let's be very honest here. A LOT, LOT of people do just that. The vast majority of people don't bother with voice chat even when there is an option. If you use discord or something similar you'll continue to use that and go about your day.

The app is apart of the overall package and will do a lot more then just voice chat. You can likely just ignore the voice chat feature like so many do on other systems. You aren't paying for the app. You're paying for the access to online play.

Best case scenario.

The App is actually easy to use and somehow makes things better without to much trouble. Maybe some of it's features are integrated into the system OS itself. People still put people on mute and the vast majority still don't bother with the voice chat feature.

The voice chat isn't the biggest issue here and never was. What the online service is like in terms of server stability, speed, discounts, downloadable games, price, etc are all far more important and bigger unknowns. That people zero in on this, feel so angry, when it's such a small aspect and an aspect people generally ignore has been really confusing.

That'd mean less resources (memory/processing) for the game and more to the OS.

My low-end phone can handle group voice-chat running in the background while using other apps. This is not an either/or question, unless the Switch is horribly engineered compared to modern computing (which I 100% doubt is the issue).

I suspect most of the people who did voice chat before will just keep using Discord or Skype regardless lol

Yeah, good points. OS development must be a very low priority job for platform holders.

1. There is a jack on the controller.

2. Through the TV?

There is a jack on the Switch unit itself, but not on any of the controllers.

So I'm getting the impression there is no voice chat at launch and possibly no online play at launch. Is bomberman local only multiplayer until online launches?

Can't chat with people you don't know.

So not only do you need a second device to chat, you have to do organizing on a third device to build a large friends list of people who actively play in order to do any serious competitive gaming and dot just docking around with randos.

I see scenarios in which the app would be a cool neat thing, but having it as the only option is the real bad decision here. I don't understand how Nintendo could have failed to see this would piss off plenty of people and it worries me that it's a reflection of how disconnected the jpn headquarters are from the rest of the world's (because I can't outright believe someone at NoA or NoE would have agreed with this being a fine idea).

I'm just waiting for them to comunicate this feature clearly, but they have failed to do so.
I also want some Nintendo cool shiny new stuff, but this kind of cloudy information on a feature that's a standard everywhere, doesn't boost my confidence as potential buyer.

That's about it.

This seems like an awesome solution if you dont got a bluetooth headset (or a headset with a 10metres cable) if you want to play at home and use voice chat, cause than you can wirelessly connect and use your phone for voice and messages and matchmaking (docked mode) Undocked you could still use a headset directly for the switch (hopefully)..
And when you are on the road just use the phone for appointments

1- Show me the receipt, so far only the Switch tablet itself have a jack.

I saw the Pro Controller from every angles and never saw a jack.

Party chat MUST be integrated in the Switch, locking it to a phone app is absolutely unacceptable in this era. Hopefully they clear that up soon enough.

So...Here's a question

If the Switch uses phones for voice chat, and the Switch has no headphone jack, how do you hear the game audio when you are using your headset?

The same way it has worked on any system since voice chat became a thing?

There's a lot of weird stuff with Nintendo's implementation here, but they didn't change the fundamentals as far as straight voice chat is concerned. The only real issue right now is for stereo headset support in docked mode, which I don't know how they're planning to address if we're already looking at a two-device implementation.

The problem I have with all of that isn't the app, it's that you have to pay to use it. If all of this was free it would be a great solution imo, but it isn't. I don't even know if my phone will be supported.
