Mobile gaming: coming into its own finally?

In the west.

with the launch of Fire Emblem and with Yugioh a few weeks earlier, and Super Mario Run, it feels like mobile games are stepping up their game.

i have spent more time this week gaming on my phone than pc. does anyone else feel like this? and could this be the beginning of better and more "console" like experiences geared for mobile play on the phones?

I've been playing more mobile games lately, but I'm not sure they've "come into their own".
Mario is super fun and works very well with the system.
FE feels a bit too much like FE-lite despite being quality.
It's still not a platform I'd like to play most of my games on despite being so comfortable/convenient to use.

I doubt it, Fire Emblem Heroes is shallow compare to Awakening and due to the nature of it being a "Free" to play game it's designed to claw as much money from the players by getting the players to buy items.

Plus unlike console mobile games are still limited by touch screen control and I ended up deleting Rayman Adventure because the game was just horrible to control with the touch screen.

Mobile games have been "stepping up their game" since they started. It's just that the majority of the good games weren't marketed well enough (since most of them are by small publishers, if not a small group of guys in one room) for people to see them among the crowd of bad games. Now that Nintendo's doing them, and they're being marketed a lot, people are paying attention.

Coming into its own because there are a few polished apps with popular licenses? Nah. Mobile gaming has been great for some time now, and another gacha game isn't the reason why.

Mobile gaming can be really fun for sure. There are some solid games on there, the problem is there is also a sea of trash to wade through which can be a problem in finding real gems.

We are long past the point though where people should be saying mobile gaming is bad. There's some really great experiences, and I'm currently addicted as hell to Fire Emblem Heroes

I guess if you mean by "coming into their own" you mean "took elements of widely popular quality mobile games and skinned them with Nintendo characters"

Yu Gi Oh is a digital card game. We have Hearthstone and Shadowverse which are other card games on mobile.

Fire Emblem is a solid Fire Emblem lite from what I'm hearing, but there are other gacha games with great gameplay like Puzzle & Dragons out there.

Super Mario Runner follows countless other games in the genre that I've seen reviewed quite well.

Mobile has been fine for ages. You're just discovering it now because you needed some familiar characters and worlds to get you to pay attention to games outside your bubble.

It's been for years man. You're too late.

I do like Super Mario Run.

Then I tried FE Heroes and it reminded me why I don't usually care about mobile games.

Been playing more and more on mobile since 2015 (and casually before that), I go where the Japanese support is and the games releasing here and there on PS4/3DS aren't enough.

I find most if not all mobile games to be void of any merit. Whenever they try to broach the realm of actual game-ass-games, they fall flat on their face. And even games that make good use of it as a medium (monument valley and the GO games for example) don't tend to make any lasting impressions on me. It doesn't help that the stores they're sold on are so poorly curated that you're inundated with piles and piles of garbage that's more interested in getting you addicted than offering an actually compelling gaming experience. And I personally don't think the medium will ever get better in that regard. But whatever, glad to be proven wrong, some day.

I don't know what "coming into their own" means, but if it means Super Mario Run, then your probably 7 or 8 years late.

All this.

Some of us also remember mobile gaming before the iPhone. Mobile gaming came into its own long ago.

I've always thought mobile gaming has been a big thing for awhile now. The ease of being able to pick up and play, plus micro-transactions soothing the pain of paying money meant many video game publishers were flocking to the market.

I do agree though, more of the larger IPs are starting to make their way to mobile, and the quality of games has gone up.

I think it is continuously improving, and the fact that one of the "big 3" is making large efforts to pushing their titles onto the platform is a sign that it can no longer be ignored.

However, I also feel that there hasn't been a single game on the platform that has made me 'engrossed' in the same way that a portable or home console game has. Even the hit titles that have made their claim to fame on GAF haven't held my interest for more than a week or so (Monument Valley, Radical Fishing, etc.)

There are still genres in the traditional gaming space that have also not cropped up on the platform that I think would be a perfect match (older style JRPGs, for example, are there but have not made as big a splash as I thought that they would - rather, ports have been the mainstay).

There is still room to go up.

I don't see how these releases have changed anything

Mobile games are still what they've been. There are certain types of games that work great on the platform, and there's a lot that don't.

If all it took for you to appreciate mobile was the appearance of your favorite characters, I don't reckon you were against it for the right reasons

Mobile has been stepping it up long before Nintendo (or Yugioh) dropped into the scene. Not sure what you're implying...or if it makes sense (if it is what I think you're saying).

Mobile games are mobile games. When you're restricted to a touchscreen for input there's not much room for improvement.

Actually 2 of the big 3 are making large efforts. For some reason Sony mobile games have been, are being ignored by some.

Sony even had a mobile game section on the Vita. But Sony has been doing mobile gaming for awhile. Even went so far as to make a phone with a controller built in.

DS: Nintendo are also making big moves into mobile gaming. Super Mario Run comes out soon and Pokemon Go was the success story of the year on mobile. Is this an area Sony will be looking to move into?

SY: Not like Nintendo is. But the mobile is a great tool to connect with our fans and might be a good place to allow new gamers – or non-gamers – to become familiar with our IP. So we will look at opportunities to make use of the device.

Not all mobile games are f2p and they have always good for the last couple of years without these entries.

Don't let certain GAF folks cloud your perception if you feel otherwise.

Yu Gi Oh Duel Link is pretty good tho.

Yup.

This doesn't negate that Sony has been doing mobile gaming long before Mario run.

Mario run being so popular doesn't change that.

Yeah. But I'm not surprised at all if Gaf are late into this.

Yeah some neat games for sure. I still see mobile gaming as something to play on a 5 minute break and thats a good thing, butt the interface and screen is just way too limited for anything beyond that. The games are all made in such a way that it can be played for 1 minute. I dont enjoy the free to play model as well. I suspect it will never be anything more than that even 10 years from now.

This sums it up pretty well.

I dig the F2P games as it's kind of like a MMO-lite. Game you like, possible grinding, community to interact with, constant flow of new content, ridiculous holiday events. Phones are convenient and as result I probably play on them more than I do consoles/PC now.

As weird as it may sound I actually prefer the F2P Gacha games on mobile than say, games that feel like bigger more traditional experiences.

Idk I guess it's just because they feel totally different than console games and I think grinding for the stuff is fun. But yeah I'd rather play something like FE Heroes than a more "full fledged" experience on my phone

2013 was the year it "came into their own," at least for me

Device 6, The Room (Original), and Year Walk all released within a few months of each other. All three were amazing, and IMO better than any game listed in the OP.

The platform has been going strong since then

Are Fire Emblem and Yugioh even western games?

If you really want to see where mobile gaming came into its own, at least from an artistic viewpoint, go play Device 6 from 2013.

No...if anything the mobile market has stagnated, and is getting worse over time in my eyes.

So many mobile game releases come out these days, that good content gets continually buried. Google and Apple have done less work than Valve to create discovery tools, much less crack down on all the complete carbon copy games that keep releasing, and I don't see many mobile game sites or taste makers popping up to make people aware of indie content like console or PC.

Barely any pay up front games exist anymore as F2P has become the entrenched business model. The bulk of top grossing and popular games are the same few titles from the same few companies, vs. the success stories of the past on the platform.

I'm not seeing tons of smarter or deeper games getting successful on the platform to provide variety for people outside the casual gamer demographics. It's still just bite-sized game session experiences, not the long meaty RPG experiences even the 3DS gets. Touch controls still put limitations on game design, and only the Nintendo Switch is providing a good from factor tablet gamepad experience.

Mobile used to be a platform I was curious and optimistic about, occasionally partaking in say 5 years ago...but now...it's not even on my radar as PC and consoles with the indie scene provide more than I can keep up with.

All that has changed are Nintendo and a few other companies are porting their IP over to mobile, but it's consistently dumbed down titles. Even the few good things like the GO games from Square Enix get ported to PC anyway.

I do still have optimism it can improve, and the problems I have get countered by Google, Apple and other companies.

Mobile came into its own years ago. It's only been getting better and more refined since then. There are so many good games coming out every month that it can be overwhelming to keep up. Seeing the platform evolve and expand has been awesome to watch

Honestly, only way one can say otherwise is if they don't follow the platform or don't play mobile games regularly.

Yeah, 2013 would be a good turning point.

I have only played a handful of F2P games like Brave Exvius and Brave Frontier and that Sega one, Chain Chronicle.

Totally sick of the 1*,2*,3* etc fusion BS. I really don't even care when I get new units because they all feel so expendable.

Mobile gaming is kinda bleh to me.

the Square Enix "Go" games were free on amazon a week or two ago. I'm in (and they run on my $60 phone just fine)

Mobile gaming has been great for a long time. You just dont know because you never give it a chance.

Pretty sure I've said this in a previous thread, but it's great to see that most posts aren't all "mobile is shit and not real games" and all that. Used to be way more of that in these kinds of threads

I'm glad you're discovering mobile games can be good now that trusted IP are showing up, but mobile gaming has been great for a while
