I'm really disappointed in how Bethsda has treated the Prey IP (Old and New)

To clarify, I think Arkane's Prey is going to be a good game. It's not appealing to me personally, but I have no ill will towards them. Though i'm sure some people who won't read the topic will assume I hate it or something.

My big complaint comes from Bethesda themselves. They own the original Prey IP, which is a game I really enjoyed. Yet now the game is forever to be held in the bethesda vault because they couldn't take over human head and needed to use the name ASAP to keep the rights to it. This is just a weird situation all around in my eyes. If Bethesda didn't own the rights to the older game, and just had the title it would be understandable. If Bethesda had some little ties to old prey in this new game, it would make a little more sense. Like they could have saved themselves some flack by saying this was a reboot with some very small ties. It wouldn't have been the best answer, but would have at least been something. But to completely ignore a title you own which is a competent product and has it's fans is just odd to me. Why can't bethesda just put the old game back up on steam as prey classic or something? Did failing at being able to buy out another company kill their interest in this franchise completely? I can't recall too many other situations even similar to this.

I don't expect the story of Tommy or Killian to ever be continued at this point. But I really dislike how bethesda want's to bury the old game, even when they own it. Since their idea of trying to be silent about the series and release a new IP with the name didn't exactly work. A lot of the first comments are still related to the old game. I feel like if anything, Bethesda did Arkane a disservice forcing them to use the name. Since even though the game is it's own thing, it will forever have this cloud hanging over it.

Arkane's Prey looks to be the best Prey, and if it turns out than all this business that has occurred has been worth it.

It's a crying shame because The original Prey 2 was actually really unique looking game. It was open world with a lot of parkour navigation around the city, it had a visual aesthetic that oozed alien cyberpunk atmosphere and felt truly alien, while revoling around chasing and apprehending targets. I remember reading how one side of the city would always be sunny and the other would have a perpetual night. I mean fuck there hasn't been anything like this even visually since Prey 2. Not even Cyberpunk 2077 because that's not on an alien planet. Fuck I'm getting super frustrated thinking about this again. It's always a truly sad state of affairs when an actually unique looking title gets shafted. FUCK.

nah dude, no matter how good this new prey will be, none of bethesda's shady shit against human head will be worth it.

I dearly hope the Prey OT I'm making won't be filled with posts complaining what's happened to Prey 2.

And I think the alien design looks cool and otherworldly despite the polarizing reception to it

Really? Because everything I've seen so far looks like a bland knock off of System Shock 2 and BioShock without any of the amazing writing those games had and a terrible art style/graphics.

Same here. I've barely even paid attention to whatever that thing called Prey is these days. I want a real sequel but looks like it will never happen now./

As always, Prey 2 people, please reach out :)

The biggest shame to me though is the lack of the original builds of Prey leaking. Looks real neat.

How much did PREY 2 have in common with the original PREY? Did they share protagonists, genre and world? I just don't know so I would appreciate if someone explained it to me.

Also I commend Jawmuncher for hvaing an attitude towards the "new" PREY that is seemingly quite hard to find on gaf, I can't remember even one thread about that game without someone commenting stuff like "not my prey" or just generally showing that they will protest bethesda by not buying the arkane game, which kinda makes me sad, it wasn't arkane that decided that this would be a prey game. I fully understand not liking the direction, bethesdas handling of the original series and humanhead and I also can understand that the people who looked forward to more prey might not be fans of the genre the new one is (immersive sim) and might not buy it because it's not their kind of game.

1. We don't know if it would have been a masterpiece, though it looked real good pre-release doesn't really translate to being an amazing game when it releases (extreme example: No man's sky)

2. Why do you have to be openly hostile against the "crap" that arkane is making? Is it because you think they did the decision to name their new game PREY even when they probably knew about the baggage that the series have?

Yeah the OG Prey 2 had a new protag but Tommy from the first game was also in it, also the protag of Prey 2 crashlanded in a plane seen in the beginning of original Prey so they were tied.

It was set in the same universe as the first prey. You would play a new protagonist that ended up in the alien world and becomes a bounty hunter. Tommy (the protagonist from the first game), was going to be in the game as a character. Though to what extent is unknown.

Yeah, i'll joke and what not about the #notmyprey stuff. But after all is said and done, no one is to blame but bethesda themselves. Even in interviews, it feels like Arkane feels bad that they have to use the prey name every time they get asked about it.

You don't like Bethesda's publishing/management arm, we get it. Can we stop talking about Arkane's Prey like it has anything to do with the canceled game? This SS2 successor was always going to be made regardless of its branding, so just try to get past the title already.

I am though? I can be disappointed and still be over it.

I don't care about the original Prey or Prey 2 at all and I'm glad I get a much better looking game (made by the dev behind one of last gen's best titles) in its place.

So you have played the game now, huh? Because they really haven't shown much of the story or the writing so far, they have focused on the gameplay in their marketing so far.

Also saying the art style and graphics are horrible is some real bullshit, the art deco space station looks stunning. The graphics and IQ is superb and feels like one of the worst things to call terrible about the game so far.

You can hope but we are on gaf and the grudge with bethesda about PREY 2 will surely make the OT something special.
I'm just tired by it at this point, it was kinda tolerable in the announcement thread and the first trailer thread but the posts just keep coming in every PREY thread.

I'm totes going to buy NuPrey cos it looks interesting, is made by a great dev and has chris avellone, but having replayed the OG Prey just last week, it definitely is a shame we don't get a proper sequel to it as well since it was a really great, mindbowing game.

Masterpiece? It seems for many, nothing is more perfect than a cancelled game. It can never disappoint or not meet any expectations you have.

The fact is manygames had great debuts and didn't deliver. There's no way to know how they game would have ultimately turned out

As an unreleased game it will always have the benefit of never being released when it comes to quality. Can't really make a claim about either when you haven't played either.

I mean, it's practically System Shock 3, so they are pretty related in concept.

Yeah from what I heard the pitch was pretty much to make a system shock spiritual successor.

I really hope this ends up being good and doesn't tank, the immersive sim genre feels like it is hanging on a small thread at this point with games like deus ex now being shelved indefinetly.

Yup. This is Resident Evil 3.5 all over again.
There is so much more backstory on this. And disgusting publisher meddling. Zenimax deserves every bit of bad rep they get over this. Not that it matters much. There are probably just a handful of people that know what happened and still care about it, at this point.

i seriously don't get this kind of attitude. i mean, i do, but i find it very, very cold.

you will probably get a really good game by arkane, but to simply chalk the whole 'bethesda/zenimax & human head' scenario to "it's just business" is really lame and a disservice to the unacknowledged effort human head made towards their sequel. and the shit treatment they received immediately after.

as the vocal 'internet msg board gamer' market, we really should be more vocal of our distaste towards developers being bullied by publishers. when you stay silent about this crap, you invite even more publishers to do the same, and encourage a culture where this kind of behaviour is ok.
i hate it when the big 'prey' on the small.
pun intended.

The game was still in alpha stage after two years and a half of development. The publisher was not happy and scrapped it.

That's it.

Also, they had the right to do so.

More like Bethesda deliberately made them fail milestones for no reason other than to try and force them into such a terrible financial position that Zenimax could perform a hostile takeover. And no, they most likely did not have the right to do so but Human Head obviously didn't have the resources to sue them over it.

The current version looks so bland. I hope it fails miserably, so bethesda would either get rid of Prey's name or focus on bringing what actually intrigued players in the first place.

I feel sorry for Arkane, Im sure they are trying to do something decent but no one will forget the Prey 2 debacle. I like how Arkane"s Prey looks and I will pick it up eventually, but I do admit that Prey 2 sounded more interesting.

Alien abduction in prey was nutz! The portals snd gravity walk ways blew my mind!

Game was crazy interesting and i enjoyed it a lot.

Rip prey 2.

What the hell is wrong with you? Why the fuck would you wish a game that a developer is passionate about to fail? -_-

It doesn't really bother me. Prey looks great, they could have used another name, but they haven't. No one of us played the game already, so don't assume there won't be any ties to the first game. I don't think there will be any, but we don't know it. Also I don't get people hating on Arkane's Prey and then raving about Prey 2, which looked great, but barely related to the first game either. So for me there isn't even a clear idea what Prey is, so just deliver a great game Arkane.

Prey 2 looked so amazing I will never stop bemoaning its death in Prey threads. Now that Dishonored is probably dead as a franchise maybe Bethesda can get Arkane to make Prey 2.

I have no doubt about Arkane's ability to deliver on Prey but the setting and premise of Prey 2 is infinitely more interesting than the cliche'd trapped in a space-station plot they're going with :(

Agreed, and it's the reason why I decided to never buy anything from Bethesda/Zenimax ever again. I'm just sorry for Arkane, I'm sure they're a bunch of good guys.

Fortunately I have a physical copy of the original game, so I can play it whenever I want.
