Whoops! Time warp! We skipped January's post. We (got) played (by) Battletoads though.
Now it's on to the uber famous Double Dragon by Technos!
Get ready to punch and get punched to save your lady!

FokoIgz.png

Wiki wiki ya ya, ya ya:
The original Double Dragon by Technōs was first released as a coin-operated
arcade game in 1987. A Nintendo Entertainment System version also produced by
Technōs was released the following year, followed by a Game Boy version in 1990.
Various licensed versions of the games were also produced by other developers for
various gaming platforms such as the Master System, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Genesis,
and the Lynx. Versions of Double Dragon for home computers were also released as
well.

Here's how the voting shook out for anyone interested.

Thanks guys!

NES Game Club Guidelines
The nominated title should be readily available via standard
channels such as eBay, for a reasonable price (Maximum $30,
preferably less to give the majority of people a chance to join
in). The title should be a licensed NES/Famicom title (No hacks,
homebrew, multicarts). Only exception is unlicensed, but readily available titles.
The title should be available in English, and if not, it should at the very least be
playable without knowledge of Japanese.

Due to the nature of the Club, excessively long or grind-heavy
games such as RPGs will be excluded.

Use this site to check prices.

Selection Process
Games are nominated two months out (eg: if game is nominated in March, it will be the
game played in May). They can be nominated starting one day after the post for a
month's pick goes live (eg: if a game is posted on March 4, nominations open on March 5).

The first five games suggested after nominations open that have not yet been played,
and were not nominated the month before will be added to the list and will be voted on.

So be sure to come in early to nominate your favorites!

Five days after the nominations open, or when we reach five nominations (whichever
comes first) the nominations are tallied in the following manner:
The list of nominees are checked for infringements of the above
guidelines, and any not meeting the requirements are removed.
The voting list will be shuffled for each member voting.
Voting will take place until the 20th day of the month, at which point the poll will
close and the votes will be tallied.
The winner will be announced as soon as the tally is counted so that members
will have time to pick up the winning game.

- January 2017 - Battletoads (I'll make a post for this at some point haha)
- December 2016 - Crystalis
- November 2016 - Bionic Commando
- October 2016 - Castlevania
- September 2016 - Blaster Master

I just finished Double Dragon on my NES mini!

It's... a cheap ass game. But you can learn the quirks and cheese your way through (save states don't hurt...). Interesting comparing it to Double Dragon IV, which is basically a turd, I think even DD1 is better than it, less cheap, and more consistent.

FYI, Double Dragon actually has a post-apocalyptic setting, it's supposed to be a Fist of the North Star/Mad Max setting, not the apparently normal 1980s setting of the western version. Which makes a hell of a lot more sense of the mutants like Abobo, who is basically Mr Heart Hokuto no Ken:

latest

Of course this influence is explicit in the original Famicom art

^^ Congrats. I started in on it tonight. Made it to the 3rd level on my first try. And my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. I need to work on the side scrolling part. I discovered the backslap hit, I should have no problem on the open stages.

This is from Usenet.

Newsgroups: rec.games.video
Subject: Awards for Best Games

Date: 18 Oct 1990

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!original/rec.games.video/OW6QbEtZK80/A7JXRwJcsHgJ

Well, since EGM recently printed their favorite games of 1990, or
Winter 1990 anyway, I thought it might be interesting to list the
picks of Famicom Tsushin, my favorite game magazine, for best games
made from 1983-1989.

This is from Famicom Tsushin's 1989 "All Soft Catalog", a remarkable
reference book which lists (almost) all games ever made for the
Famicom, Gameboy, PC Engine and Megadrive up to July 1989

CATEGORY AWARDS

BEST SCENARIO: Final Fantasy II (Square)
Having played Square's Final Fantasy Legend (for Gameboy) I don't
doubt this. Recent strong contenders would be MOTHER and of course
Final Fantasy III (the prolog alone is great!).

BEST GRAPHICS: Gradius II (Konami)
My award would go to MOTHER, but for this kind of graphics Gradius
II is pretty amazing. Apparently Konami was using a special chip
for this game, and with Nintendo of America's recent decision to
let companies make their own cartridges maybe this game will finally
come out in the US.

MOST TALK: DragonQuest IV (Enix)
Endless articles about this one before and after it came out.

BEST DIRECTION: Ninja Ryuukenden [Ninja Gaiden] (Tecmo)
No doubt for those great cinematic interludes.

BEST CHARACTER DESIGN: DragonQuest (Enix)
I'd probably pick SMB3 here.

BEST BGM [BACKGROUND MUSIC]: Legend of Zelda (Nintendo)
I love Zelda but can't remember what the music was right now.
MOTHER would definitely get my vote for this category.

BEST TRANSLATION: Wizardry (ASCII)
No comment here; I haven't played either the computer or Famicom version.

BEST CM [COMMERCIAL]: Famicom Wars (Nintendo)
I've seen only a shot from this commercial and it doesn't look like
one I would like. On the other hand Nintendo's recent commercial
for Doctor Mario is excellent; SMB3 was pretty good also.

LONGSELLER AWARD: Super Mario Brothers (Nintendo)
Without a doubt.

There were also four special awards; the only game available in the US
which won one was "Metroid" (Nintendo) for "a perfect match between
graphics and BGM."

Seems like I'm always fated to never get past Mission 3. I've owned Double Dragon since I was a kid and never made it past the forest without some sort of cheat to get through. I feel like that's the level where the game starts to get real, as it were. I'm going to set beating Mission 3 with no cheats as a soft goal this month.

Double Dragon's still one of those games that really had a profound impact on me as a gamer growing up, I'll never forget the first time I played the console port, sure it wasn't the arcade, but it seemed close enough to me. IMO, DD2 outshines it on the NES, but the original game still has a lot of charm to it despite no co-op mode.

What are you having trouble with in Mission 3? Always yank those guys with the purple hair by their hair and throw them. Drop kick Abobo when you're close to him.

It is complete. I almost blew it dying twice on stupid platform parts but managed to beat the last part on my last life. The game isn't overly hard, at least I didn't feel like it was cheap. When I died I usually screwed up.

My brother in law left his stuff in my house some years ago, including a NES with some games. So recently I put it to work. All his games but one works, but it take a while because there is a special position for them to work.

The thing is: my friend borrowed me about 25 games, and none of them works, including the same games that works previously (like SMB3). I googled it and found a "purple screen of death", which match almost my experience (system works, but only some games, no blinking light).

I opened my NES, checked the 72 pin adaptor for bend pins and dirt, but it didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Did you actually try cleaning the connector or just check to see if it looked dirty?

I cleaned the connector (both ends) and the motherboard connector with an eraser and steel wool (didn't have isopropylic AC at the time). Also I fixed one bent pin. The problem persisted.

When I was a kid I used to go to arcades/comic shops to play Double Dragon all the time. Was so excited when I heard it was coming to NES. Imagine my disappointment when I saw screenshots and it looked nothing like the arcade version.

Disable the 10NES chip. It's very simple.

And you're cleaning the carts too, right?

How are double Dragon 4 and Double Dragon Neo?

I think Neon is great. It fixes a lot of the problems I have with the series. It plays smoothly, combat is fun, it's not really all that cheap or unfair. Of course it continues the one series tradition I did like, and that's that it has good music.

I beat Double Dragon on my micro years ago, for the first time. I think the stage where the bricks pop out usually ended my run.

Double_Dragon_NES_screen_41.png

Yeah, those.

I own it on NES, but the first time I owned a game called Double Dragon was the Tiger Handheld, which I adored.

This game is great because the RPG build up system encourages playing dangerously (punches get more EXP than kicks), although it is also really hidden.

Also, being able to beat the Chin on the tall building by throwing him off the side is one of my all time highlights.

This year I bought this shirt, which is amazing.

I am currently working on a break down of what makes Double Dragon so great from a game design perspective, because the game keeps being overlooked, when it really is a gem.

Also everyone who says "I just used X move over and over to win!"... why? That isn't skillful play. I like to mix up my fighting tactics because at the end of the day that is what is fun about the game. Punch a few times, kick, grapple, knees, throw. Kick another, get on top of them, ground and pound them to submission. Etc.

These games do not necessarily encourage interesting play, but they have the capacity for it, so why not go with it? I feel like that's the biggest issue with DD 4, is people don't "have fun" with the fighting system, and instead yell about being able to cheese the fuck out of it.

Want an interesting experience? In NES Double Dragon, if you never stop going up and down, the enemy will never attack you (and that's how a lot of games work) It's all based on calculating the player's X and Y, with enough time given to let the player attack before enemies attack.

VOTE NOW FOR MARCH 2017
========================

Voted, even though I still haven't been able to play Battletoads or Double Dragon... My basement floor gets replace next week, so I can finally start setting up my retro cave again!

Voted Metal Gear because I've never actually beat the NES version despite owning it! Also I feel asleep and the truck have started to move.

Is this thread dead now? Never seen it so inactive. Everyone on to the NES Classic thread instead?
Well I beat Double Dragon on day 1 of the month, and haven't done much interesting NES/Fami wise for a few weeks. I'm sure others have a similar story. Just how threads go really.

I did get the Famicom Disk thing for the Famicom mini, might post that later ;)

I feel bad because quite a bit of the last few games have not been my favorites, plus I've been pretty busy. I feel like since I'm organizing the monthly club I should be doing a better job participating, but it's not fun if I'm always trashing the games we're playing haha

That said, be sure to vote everyone! I'll try and close it out on Friday so we all have time to ensure we can pick up the winner.

I still can't beat Double Dragon. It expects perfection. The Machine Guy always ends me because I'm drained from fighting everyone else. The two Abobos at the end take most of my health. You can't take your time, you have to rush it because there's a time limit.

I'm finding it to be 1000000x harder than Battletoads.

I only beat it with save states, but could do it back in the day. Cheesing 'rising' jump kicks is my main trick.

Ive had some stuff coming up in my personal life, so havent really played games for a while unfortunately. Definitely going to try to beat Double Dragon though, just need to clear my head first. I love all the retro-threads btw, and really want to see them continue thriving. Going to do my bit for that soon!

I've been quite busy at work and with family since the holidays. It really never let up for me. I've also oscillated somewhat back into modern gaming. I tend to go in waves. I haven't touched anything retro since before Xmas. I even eased up on my habit of checking eBay a couple times a day. Now it's a couple of times a week. I don't know why my brain works this way, but it does. Eventually I'll be back in a kick where I'm obsessing over retro again.

I do this as well, though I'm currently on the retro end of things and apart from my own project I haven't touched a modern game for several months.

I've been playing NES quite a bit, I just haven't been playing the titles chosen by the club. I just finished up Willow, a game I've always liked but never completed until now. It has some issues for sure. Pretty much every boss fight is easy, I don't think I failed on any boss except the final one where you need a certain amount of MP to win. The game can also be too obtuse in a few spots, I played with a printed out walkthrough from gamefaqs at the ready.

Overall though, I enjoyed it. Graphics are pretty good, music is good (if a bit repetitive at times) and the gameplay is fun. I like how the swords all have both a "swing" (B) and a "stab" (Direction + B) and there's a good amount of gear to find.
