Awww L'arc was one of the bands that got me into J-rock all those years ago! I was in 6th grade, watching FLCL and Cowboy Bebop on adult swim and just fell in love. The Pillows, L'arc~en~ciel, Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer, TM Revolution, etc... those were my jams!

My all-time favorite is Double Twelve from Velvet Eden, I don't even know how many hundreds of times I've listened to that album. It has a bunch of new songs mixed in with a bunch of updates to some older songs to make them even better, the absolute pinnacle of visual kei in my book.

Edit: Listening to some old L'arc~en~ciel and can confirm not garbage. Way better than One OK Rock and the stuff you kids are into these days! (okay I like a lot of modern stuff too, but One OK is just one I've never cared for)

I'll give one thing to L'Arc-en-Ciel : I loved Driver's High when I was watching GTO as a 11 years old, and while I was looking for the song on the Internet I stumbled across Beat Crusaders, Ajikan and Ellegarden, which are the 3 bands that made me fall in love with Japanese music (well, music in general actually), so in some way I'm grateful to them lol
Aside from that, well, I hate everything that's somewhat visual-kei so...

Nearly broke some ribs because of the new KEYTALK music video, holy shit. The random EDM thrown in before the chorus, hahahaha

The thumbnail already had me rolling because of their stupid faces

Togawa performance was so good :') got kind of emotional during Mushi no Onna and I never do that.

meanwhile Tenten is crying while dj'ing togawa songs :D

BiS song and video are both boring

Yeah it was great. It was good to see her laughing a lot, I've never seen her so happy during an interview before. I know we saw her in that recent ad, but she really does look much better than recent live reports led me to believe, people kept saying she looked really ill and could hardly sing, but that was proved wrong when the albums came out anyway.

I think that despite her voice changing, she can still sing quite well. She's lost a lot of range and it's a lot rougher, but the control is still there. I think when she sings in lower registers it sounds awesome.

Mongoloid sliding in from off-screen and singing from the floor cracked me up.

So a theory that Avex banned international exports due to them wanting their local Avex shops to sell to that direct country makes this even more frustrating. Why place a ban before the local Avex stores are ready? this is bullshit.

AI Otsuka's latest single is great. Love all three songs!

Did the video remind you of Baby Don't Cry?

You gotta see Vampilla live one day. It's a must.
I'm honestly surprised they did the stream, because they were really adamant about Togawa wanting no pictures to be taken during the show I went to.

I'm still trying to decide which Japanese music to listen to first. Looking for critically acclaimed albums.

I did listen to a woman, who sang in English, but her English is good, but isn't that great.

Is there a list of masterpieces, like Rolling Stone top 500 albums of all time? I'm looking for critically acclaimed albums that are as good or better than top 500 albums of all time. And boy did I find masterpieces in that list, such as In The Court of The Crimson King.

you might want to dig through this list:

I'll personally vouch for about 30-40 of these as being top-tier classics.

e: heck, I'll just list the ones I'll back

good album (they're all good post-nomiya maki) but Overdose or Bossa Nova 2001 are way more genre-defining

Those would also be my two votes for "favourite P5 albums." Can't speak to historical significance, though.

Also: that Polkadot Stingray song is neat, but holy hell buying that EP in any format besides MP3s is next to impossible.. No FLAC sources, only Tower sells physical in Japan, package forwarding services all seem expensive as hell for a four-track CD, no eBay/Amazon/Discogs marketplace listings in the U.S./Canada, and Amazon.co.jp hit me with huge customs charges last time I tried to buy a new product off a Marketplace seller (whcih I don't think is even an option here because none of them seem to ship to Canada).

there's a number of acts on that list who I think have better albums than the ones listed, but I really don't have the energy to make my own list or explain why I think the other ones are better. That's not Guitar Wolf's best album. that's not Supercar's second best album. that's like YMO's 3rd or 4th best album, but it has Rydeen on it so it makes the list.

whatcha gonna do. still a good starting point.

Envy is one of my all times. I've listened to them since I was 16 when the lead singer of Thursday put me on to them. I got to see them in concert before they broke up and it was without a doubt, one of the greatest musical moments of my life. I was absolutely fucking heart broken when they broke up.

they're not technically dead. I think they want to keep going with a new singer.

Did you actually give a shot to the albums people mentioned when you've asked? There was plenty of damn good stuff in there, not sure why you want a "critically acclaimed masterpieces" list so much.
Just start from these recommendations and see what resonates with you.
