I should point out that quote is in reference to corruption, the Mobius is using in a context it was never meant to be used in.

I'll post the quote:

"Publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman."

The quote has been used in the context of free speech principles. He was an advocate for civil liberties so I am sure he would agree to the usage of it in any appropriate context. The underlying idea is that when 2 contrary ideas are openly debated, the correct idea prevails. Get the wrong ideas out in the open to debate them and you can change people's ideology if they agree with the wrong ideology. At least I don't agree with you claiming it was never meant to be used this way, but also who cares.

This is not surprising. I have a little bit of sympathy, since Trump never asked Melania permission to run, and never thought about Baron. But also, we're forking over an insane amount of money for her to live in Trump Tower.

Since inauguration day, Melania has spent most of her time holed up in her lavish apartment. Never a fixture on the NYC social scene, “she is staying hidden more,” claims Bloch. (By contrast, Michelle Obama hosted an open house for select members of the public, plus a party for White House staffers during her first week on the job in 2009.)

According to a family source, not even Barron can get her out the gold-plated front door. Pre-inauguration, Melania would shuttle her son in a chauffeured SUV to and from his private school. But that was before picketers took up residence outside her building. Now, claims the source, “Melania has the Secret Service take Barron to school and retrieve him.”

Melania has left her $100 million apartment a handful of times. But aside from one outing to run errands January 30, she has usually headed to her other (luxurious) home. The first lady joined Donald, 70, at Mar-a-Lago, their $300 million estate in Palm Beach, Florida, the weekend of February 3. She went the following weekend too — with a quick pit stop in Washington, D.C., to catch a ride on Air Force One with Donald and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie. “Melania says she’s most happy at Mar-a-Lago,” says a source close to the first lady. “She loves Palm Beach!”

In familiar surroundings, she happily played hostess February 11. It was a conspicuous contrast to the previous day, when the most important woman in Japan was left to tour various spots in the nation’s capital minus the traditional first lady escort. (Both Laura Bush and Obama accompanied Akie on previous visits.) While their husbands talked policy over a round of golf February 11, Melania and Akie visited a Bethesda-by-the-Sea church — where the Trumps wed in 2005 — and strolled around the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. “Don’t let her smile in those photos fool you,” claims the source. “She hates this.”

A Melania source counters that “she is very happy with her life and supporting her husband and family.”

Do not feel bad for that woman. She knew what she was getting in to and who she was marrying. His reputation existed long before she came along. She's been an enabler. She's towed the line of bullshit for Donald. She could just walk away if she wanted to, but doesn't. As First Lady, she's a brand new generation's example of modern day marriage still being used as a contract of a woman as property. She surely has an exit clause, but prefers the lifestyle to having a chance at her own and her son's happiness.

She chose this. No sympathy. Ever. Barron? Yeah he deserves better than this. He's being treated like shit by both of his parents in completely different ways! Melania? Hell no.

What are the odds that the electoral process in France can be compromised to give LePen an undeserved win via an assist from Russian/US foreign influence? I mean, we're potentially talking about the death of the EU in 2-3 months time. With so much potentially riding on the outcome, I don't trust that election to simply be decided by the will of the French people.

The issue for the FN is that while LePen the Younger has given the party a nicer sheen, much of the rest of the party members still say dumb things that remove the mask. Also, while the French conservatives have gotten more friendly w/ the FN, there's still a disgust with LePen and the like still, even among most of the Right.

It won't be the 82-18 smashing Chirac had in '02, but people have overcorrected in a way thanks to the Trump and Brexit results, saying really incredible things like the AfD will have any power in Germany or LePen is actually the odds on favorite against anybody in the 2nd round, even Harmon.

I wish the CIA was as competent/dangerous as its legends.

The United States had no intelligence to speak of when World War II began, and next to none a few weeks after the war ended. A mad rush to demobilize left behind a few hundred men who had a few years' experience in the world of secrets and the will to go on fighting a new enemy. ”All major powers except the United States have had for a long time past permanent worldwide intelligence services, reporting directly to the highest echelons of their Government," General William J. Donovan, the commander of the wartime Office of Strategic Services, warned President Truman in August 1945. ”Prior to the present war, the United States had no foreign secret intelligence service. It never has had and does not now have a coordinated intelligence system." Tragically, it still does not have one.
The CIA was supposed to become that system. But the blueprint for the agency was a hasty sketch. It was no cure for a chronic American weakness: secrecy and deception were not our strengths.

From the author's note for Legacy of Ashes, by Tim Weiner. You can argue the NSA is what the CIA should be, just the people it views are wrong - citizens of the US, rather than citizens of foreign countries.

Le Pen is most likely going to experience a defeat similar to some of the massive landslides(20%+ loss for the loser) experienced in the 20th century in the US. Educated voters will vote against her en masse most likely including youth voters.

It's also putting NYC in a bit of a pinch since we've still needs some increased protection. At least Trump himself hasn't been here every weekend like he said he might. That'd be a total fucking disaster.

If she is against Macron, most definitely. Young people like him.

I have zero sympathy for Melania. She's a grown woman willingly attached to a monster. Press about her being miserable is a win inasmuch as it weakens his image.

Google search Macron and Russia. It's full of news articles about Russia trying to ruin his reputation or chances, many attack pieces on him from RT and Sputnik.

Personally I think he has no chance, the French aren't in the mood for "purity test" candidate, I think his chances are significantly overblown like Hillary's was by the hopeful press, while at the same time lacking support and trust from the establishment since he is an outsider. If it's him VS LePen I think it will be an easy win for LePen.

I could be wrong but I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that young voters like Le Pen more than any other demographic.

Yes, the candidate who has consistently been down double digits in the polls against both Fillon and Macron will have an "easy win," especially against Macron, who she has been down ~25 points against since he entered the race

Two top House Republicans on Wednesday sent a letter to the Justice Department inspector general, urging the agency watchdog to investigate leaks about communications between aides to President Donald Trump and Russian officials.

"We have serious concerns about the potential inadequate protection of classified information here," wrote Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), chair of the Oversight Committee, and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), chair of the Judiciary Committee. "In light of this, we request that your office begin an immediate investigation into whether classified information was mishandled here."

Probe the leakers, not the content of the leaks, eh?

So transparent.

Trump is a masterful communicator who makes literally no sense if you remember what he said five seconds ago.

"Fake News" and "fake sources" are causing stories to be written about Trump that aren't true, but also these stories come from real leakers inside the CIA who will be purged.

He's not good at propaganda. But his followers are so stupid it works anyway.

Both we and the media need to stop engaging Trump on his appropriation of the term "fake". It's an empty slander he hurls at entities to discredit them but it has no basis in reality nor does he put any effort into maintaining that's the case. It's his way of attacking truthful information he doesn't like... simple as that. He contradicts himself daily on this point both on Twitter and when questioned by the media. It's to the point now where it's a distraction technique. Getting hung up on pointing out the clear contradictions is a baseless exercise.

Trump Kicks Off His 2020 Reelection Campaign on Saturday
The president is taking the permanent campaign to new levels with a political rally in Florida—the latest sign that he’s already planning for a second term.
For those of you not keeping score at home, that means Trump is hosting his first rally of the 2020 campaign just 29 days into his presidency.

The idea of a “permanent campaign” has been floating around American political circles since 1980, when Sidney Blumenthal used it as the title for a book. It was during the presidency of Bill Clinton, whom Blumenthal advised, that the idea really came into practice. Even by the standards of modern-day presidents, Clinton loved politicking, and his team held on to campaign methods once in the White House, famously calling on polling to help determine its course. Newt Gingrich helped Republicans capture the House in 1994, in part by adopting the same tactics. Each of Clinton’s successors has adopted the permanent-campaign mentality to some degree.

Yet Trump’s choice to hold a campaign rally less than a month into his presidency breaks new ground. Where his predecessors practiced electoral politics between cycles, none was willing to do so as baldly, as quickly, as Trump. Barack Obama realized, like Trump, that he thrived off large audiences, and he made liberal use of the major speech, even early in his term: In February 2009, he made several trips to promote the stimulus package and his agenda. But Obama’s events were political by implication, while outwardly aimed at boosting specific policies.
Would incumbency hobble him? Trump hasn't realized that he is the establishment now.

Eh? People are outraged someone is having dinner with someone else?

Of course they are.

The Russian connections had been circulating months before the election, and the first big announcement from the White House happened around the time of the first debate, when Hillary was up 10 points in the polls. Of course, I don't know why I'm telling you or anyone here this. :lol

I wonder if we're to take this to mean that Trump is backing away entirely from any conclusions made about Russia? After he just agreed with the intelligence community last month that Russians did indeed hack Democratic emails to undermine the election?

Well, fuck

This seemed worrying to me when it broke last night. But then it occurred to me, how the fuck can someone with zero national security or intelligence experience hope to any meaningful insight into what the intelligence community is or isn't doing? They're going to run circles around this guy.

Susan Collins announced that she's voting against Trump's nominee to head the EPA. Are there two more republican senators that can be convinced?

Edit: Aw damn, forgot about fucking Manchin. He's voting yes of course. Four republicans voting no is probably too much to ask.

Provided he's still around, Trump is going to still be in campaign mode in his second term. Whether it's to prop himself up for a prospective 3rd term (because he doesn't understand he'll need to relinquish the presidency) or to stump for his desired successor (a Medvedev equivalent) and effectively link them to the Trump brand. He doesn't know how to do anything BUT be in a "permanent campaign" mode because he only understands being the center of the universe and being a victim.

Plus the info is also being offloaded to other countries. The leaks would still happen.

My dad is a Stephen. He's independent in the Bill O'Reilly model (so, not). Used to "joke" about "solving" the middle east problems by doing stuff like nuking Mecca until you pushed through the crust of the earth and turned it into a volcano.

I legit think that there's something about the name.

Uh, that's...horrible.

Macron: "Colonialism, it was bad."
Fillon: "Actually, Colonialism was good, please pay attention to how racist I am and not my barely legal dealings. Nazis of France, you can get behind me, right? You're suckers, right?"
