Dirt Rally VR PS4 Released

I dont really think the tech is ready for racing games properly yet. Although the game plays well etc, the visual fidelity definitely detracts from the experience for me. It feels pretty cool in VR but out of all the games I own on vr this one is lowest on the list of games that benefit from the VR experience. Plus im shit at it which doesnt help lol

Play the game for a bit in VR then switch back to standard and you will quickly see how much this adds to the game. If your competent at racing games there is no better feeling of pushing your limits in VR racing, well aside from actual racing that is much better but it also hurts (currently have a broken rib due to it) and costs lots.

Alternative views are in the options you just have to set the VR relevant one to allow them.

How's the motion sickness for people?

I tried Driveclub VR and was green in a few laps. I really want this but don't want to puke...

Perhaps the key is my competence, I have very little on this game even though I have played it for tens of hours.

Ah I agree, I still think we need more power and better tech before we start getting too critical against what is a technology still very much in its infancy. Can't wait to try out tonight though, thinking I'll even get the wheel out from behind the sofa!

I think a lot of this sort of stuff will disappear once devs for racing games start building from the ground up and can prioritise resources entirely with VR in mind. I can't wait for those to arrive. Personally I'd take GT Sport fully playable with some short cuts like this rather than just selected content, just let me know which cars have the short cuts.

What is the best wheel solution you guys have found for couch VR? Or for Dirt Rally in general?

Something on my lap would be nice. I use a Laz-E-Boy recliner. Would be for this and driveclub. No need for pedals and stuff. Preferably around or under $500aud.

Not really sure of any solutions that fit your criteria, most wheels would require pedals as wellfor full immersion, I use the G29 and Wheel Stand Pro

Ugh, have a physical copy and can't find the VR option anywhere in the store. Very disappointing. This is a perfect VR game and I can play it when my wife is watching one of her awful sci-fi shows.

Yeah, what is the deal with NA? Do I need to buy the $59.99 base game then pay even more for the VR DLC? Is there going to be a 59.99 VR SKU that doesn't require the DLC?

I know there's a disc version that includes the VR mode. Not sure about digital.

So, if I want digital right now, I need to spend $60 + whatever the DLC costs? How much is the DLC?
Just saw this

The best news of all? We’re running an introductory offer when the DLC drops! From tomorrow through February 28, you can pick up the entire PlayStation VR bundle — the 2D game, the PS VR upgrade, and our Fully Loaded DLC Add-on packs — for the absolute bargain of $43.39. And if you already own the game, the cost is even better — it’ll cost you $12.99 for the DLC upgrade.

Is the fully upgraded car DLC optional? I really don't want to take away that progression in the game.

"Still waiting on Vive support :("

Just use Revive, since October/November it runs perfectly.

Quoted for truth. I don't play much because it is hard as hell, even more so if I don't lug out the wheel when I play. But it's a sim so that's fine and the VR implementation is great. I don't recall having to buy anything extra on PC. It just worked after a free patch, right?

The pack is on the US store for 69.99

Is that a price error? The press release said it should be $43

Bollocks, wheel being a total tart today, but from what i played it's a good 'un for sure.

Now, where's my screwdrivers, i have a wheel to dismantle....

From the Sony blog re: the game not showing it's $43 price:

"We’re aware it’s not showing correctly at the moment! But don’t worry, we’re all over it."

Just bought the VR add-on ($12.99 US) and gave it a try on my PS4 (non-pro).

First impressions are good. I tried the '60s Renault Alpine car and the sense of sitting in a small car is really impressive. The details and lighting in the interior are great too.

Graphics overall are pretty much what I expected for VR. Blurriness and shimmering at a distance but close up it looks great. Compared to Driveclub, I think it looks better as Dirt Rally's graphics are simpler to begin with and it doesn't feel like a massive downgrade. It also helps that corners are close and frequent, so you're not always looking at the blurry horizon.

Gameplay wise, VR definitely helps with judging distance and corners. The developers wisely added a narrowed/blacked-out viewpoint when the car is crashed/tumbling to help minimize nausea.

For myself, I still experience some nausea. Definitely less than Driveclub, but its still there...especially on the sharp corners (e.g. tight 1). Normal corners (2-6) were no problem.

One slight disappointment, the replays cannot be viewed in VR mode. But overall, a nice addition to one of the best driving games.

Ok, so are US owners of the retail version able to DL the DLC and play it now?

I'm in a weird place. I bought the fucking VR mode for 12.99. Now I can't use it because the retail version says I have to purchase it.

I go to purchase it and it says it is purchased. And sometimes it says 'this cannot be downloaded at this time.

Sony/Codemasters, you creeps. You took my money. I have the physical version. I really really hate this sort of shit.

Edit - to get it to work, I had to power down the PS4 completely. Makes no sense, I killed the app a number of times. Anyway, I'm in business.

Is there any way to turn off the blacked-out viewpoint when you crash? I am getting really fed up with all these developers babying everyone.
If we can handle full VR, we should be given the option.

I was going to buy a used copy and download the VR add-on, but the bundle for $37.09 (for Plus) is cheaper and very tempting. Hmm...

How is the IQ on a regular PS4?

Oh good timing.

Any reviews for VR yet?

Streaming it right now on the pro, turns out the earlier prob was camera chake causing pausing/loss of tracking as wheel/tv on the same table.

Out with the agffer tape and now on the wall and sorted!

But the game looks really good in VR on the pro, having to readjust to it all. :D

This is the main thing I want to be able to turn off. Seems a bit strange not to be given the option when you can turn the car vibration on, which btw if you can handle it is much better.

NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Rushy come on man. Ask the Dirt team to put in a big boy/girl option please. I promise you there are VReterans who can handle it.

There doesn't seem to be an option to disable the blacked-out viewpoint.

The only VR options I can see are under the HUD options:

VR - Right stick camera control
VR - Look Back
VR - All Driving Views
VR - Vehicle Camera Motion

These are all "off" by default.

It seems that the PC version has an additional option (according to a reddit post that I found).

https://www.reddit.com/r/dirtgame/comments/4sdaft/dirt_rally_vr_configuration_is_in_hud_options/

VR - dynamic replays (to allow VR in replays)

This is missing in the PS4 version. This would have resolved one of my complaints. Oh well.

Definitely need to revisit options to see what I can set on the PS4 version.

I feel I'm a better driver in VR mode. I normally use a hood cam without VR. Thanks to the challenge and the type of racing, this is going to be my favorite VR game. This is something I can play at almost any time. Love what Codemasters did with their Dirt series and they've carried it further with VR mode.

I'm playing with the launch PS4. Want to keep my PS4 Pro in HDR mode at this point. Plus, this gives the wife a better chance to play the games. Gonna hook her on playroom. Rush of Blood scared the shit out of her. I don't blame her.

Few more VR observations/comments (PS4, non-pro)...

- driving at night with headlights is amazing

- snow buildup on windshield is missing in VR mode

- There are no shadows underneath the cars in Rally Cross mode.

Just spent an hour on this and I'm loving it. Bought Dirt Rally a month or two ago as it was on sale on PSN but it was too hard for me as I'm rubbish at racing games. However playing it in VR seems to have made it loads easier by being able to actually see the distance to the corners and stuff and I have been having a great time.

I'm playing on PS4 Pro and graphics aren't brilliant to be honest but it doesn't bother me it's a small sacrifice to make to be able to drive in VR.

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother. Unless you can mount it to something and use pedals, just skip it and use the controller.

When Soul Calibur came out on the dreamcast, I felt like finally, the arcade experience is being delivered home.

And with VR and games like Dirt Rally VR, it feels like a very similar experience. It's better than Ferrari 355 with 3 screens. It has better physics. The feeling is completely immersive.

And I'm better at corners now. I may not be able to play any other way at some point. It's really good.

Props to Codemasters for continuing to making competent rally racers. All the other stuff, other brands are usually garbage. It feels like a fan service and this game will be remembered by a few of us, even if it didn't sell that well.

I'd love to be able to get rid of the notifications before a race. The press option to recalibrate and hold O to skip countdown. I only needed to be told that once I'm good after that. That goes for most VR games and cinema mode as well.

I'm thinking that now after researching a bit more. I just dont have the space for it and too many cables and stuff. VR. PS4 Pro. Amp. Speakers. TV. Controllers. Cables cables cables.

:-/ my download shoulld be done in a few hours. Psyched.
