The Los Angeles Lakers have shaken up their front office, promoting team legend Magic Johnson to president of basketball operations and firing general manager Mitch Kupchak and vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss.

"Today I took a series of actions I believe will return the Lakers to the heights Dr. Jerry Buss demanded and our fans rightly expect," team governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. "Effective immediately, Earvin Johnson will be in charge of all basketball operations and will report directly to me. Our search for a new General Manager to work with Earvin and Coach Luke Walton is well underway and we hope to announce a new General Manager in short order. Together, Earvin, Luke and our new General Manager will establish the foundation for the next generation of Los Angeles Lakers greatness."

I finally understand the importance of commas.

I read that as they fired Magic from the front office in an effort to take over.

It's stupid to fire your GM two days before the trade deadline and this entire situation makes Jeanie Buss look very petty since she had her people in the media write hit pieces about the two. There was even one that compared Jeanie losing her dog to Mitch Kupchak losing his daughter.

Yeah I dunno about Magic in that position. It's even weirder to think of this dude

This has been rumored for a while. There are also rumors of him wanting Kobe to get involved.

This kinda move usually doesnt work well but we'll see.

I don't think there are many examples of former star players becoming GMs/front-office to say whether it's a success or a failure. Thinking of the major American sports, I'd immediately think of Larry Bird taking the Pacers and John Elway taking the Broncos, and although I don't follow the Pacers, I think Elway has had a lot of success.

Classically, of course, we could look at Bill Russel being a player/coach/practically GM and winning championships, but that was a long time ago.

Idk Isiah ran the Knicks into the ground so hard they still haven't recovered.

I recall him mentioning bringing Kobe on board if he had more control than that consultant-type position he was originally in.

He's been successful in business ventures, but how well can he evaluate talent? Bird had moderate success with the Pacers, and of course Elway has kept the Broncos at a high level during his time, so there is some slight history that it can work out.

Matt Millen and Isiah Thomas are like the poster examples of players-turned-GMs-gone-horribly-horribly wrong.
