Omg guys

Remember when the PS4 was Sony's last console, the DS never stood a chance against the PSP and Wii was a stupid name that would never catch on

Remember

Remember when all of those came in cheaper than the competition?

Cause I do.

I hope for the sake of you Xbox peoples, he doesn't personally believe what he is saying.

I'd like to buy one myself but with only Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon, Rare Replay, EA Access and nothing much else in the foreseeable future that interest me, its just not worth it for me.

I thought it evolved into "Believe in Phil Spencer." he transcended guy form.
"Good shirts, Phil"
He'll evolve to "Most powerful Phil" a day before E3.
Hahaha stahp.

In terms of specific game(s) that will showcase the Scorpio, look forward to Crackdown 3. That native 4K, open world fully destructible, 60FPS madness. They have to nail that one as their showcase this E3.

I like the guy, but nah. Gen is pretty damn good, but it doesn't top Mass Effect and the likes.
Also needs me some Sea of Thieves soon Phil!

Phil Spencer is a great guy but the xbox brand is slowly becoming irrelevant. PS4 clearly has better games and most xbox exclusives i can get on PC. The xboxone is most definitely inferior to the 360. He needs to do something different. The xbox brand cant just keep pumping out forza, halo and gears. It needs more.

PS4, i can hardly keep up with the amount of great games coming out of the 1st party studios and 3rd party studio. Xbox need a drastic change.. Phil you need to do something different or out of the box. That, or hand over the keys to someone who will.

Make sure you tell the over 1 million that bought one last holiday.

Its been 4 years, why is this "Phil will save Xbox!" mentality still so prevalent? Not only is the XB1 still trailing the PS4 in the US despite price drop after price drop and a new "more attractive" redesign, outside the US its a MASSACRE.

To say nothing about how bad the software side of things is looking. Every non-Halo/Forza/Gears title has under-performed or bombed, and even the old Trinity is for the most part a shadow of what they once were.

What exactly has Phil saved?

In some ways, he has done things that any sensible person would do, ignore Kinect, slim console which shouldn't be applauded and a genuinely great move with BC titles .I'm not going to knock him down too much, games do takes ages to make these days so we might not see what he has pushed himself beyond something like Phantom Dust, Voodoo Vince, Ori 2 ? He has overseen some abysmal Windows Gaming although maybe forced on him, shocking Halo MCC, Rise of the Tomb Raider BS exclusive for no reason.. Problems with the Fable Legends which looks like it warranted cancelling, the Dragon game, who knows.

However I would say if he doesn't have much to show in the next few years then that's on him and Microsoft, whether that's his management or the budget or philosophy of games as a service from his bosses.

This is not the best Xbox generation. If you judge in comparison to the state of the console market at the time I would say the Xbox 360 was the best Xbox generation. It was first to market, was first to deliver HD gaming, had a robust online service and achievements, a great controller and many major exclusives like Gears of War and timed triple A exclusives like Mass Effect and Bioshock.

I even think that the original Xbox (1) is a better Xbox than the Xbox One. The OG Xbox was more powerful than the PS2, it changed the home console market by delivering online gaming and it had great exclusives like Knights of the Old Republic.

The Xbox One S is less powerful than the rival console (PS4) on the market. It was behind in the key innovation of this generation (sharing) but most significantly it is bereft of platform defining exclusives. The console has a lot of good things going for it and has made a lot of people happy. But if you compare it to the other Xboxes, then the Xbox One is the worst Xbox generation.

I'm alright mate, joking around.

All three console makers are great, will co-exist and be successful in the future

That's my prediction, as safe and nicey nice as it sounds, its my genuine belief

Thinking about this as well, Spencer might have a valid point here. It depends on what sort of losses Microsoft was eating for faulty Xbox 360s in 2006-2009. Looking back, I remember the Xbox 360 launch so strongly and thought that part of the generation -- the debut of Call of Duty, Halo 3, Gears of War, Red Dead Redemption, GTAIV, and dozens and dozens of games dropping -- was such a strong few years, but I've also blocked out that in those two or three years, I went through two or three faulty Xbox 360s, and had to ship my console to Microsoft multiple times to be fixed.

Depending on the loss that MS had to eat for those Red Ring / other issues with the 360, actual profit could compete. Additionally, those first 3 or 4 years of the Xbox 360 were in the midst of the worst global recession in some 30 years. Compared to today when the Xbox One launched while the economy was in recovery and has been very stable.

So, Spencer is probably right when thinking about the income statement. Though I say this with no knowledge of Microsoft's financials in the gaming division, hardware, software, and licensing wise. My perception is obviously that the 360 was a much better launch than the Xbox One, but I'm also blocking out the hardware issues I had.

Over 2 million people bought a Zune and that didn't stop them.

I still have my 80, it hurts.

It's probably the most likely scenario. It doesn't stop us from calling any of them (the console manufacturers) out whenever it appears they are slacking however.

Calm Killer

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
Pages of discussion over an opinion vs fact. I believe the original tweet about an opinion of what are the best exclusives. Phil tweeted about the fact that the xbox one is outpacing the sales of the 360. Both are correct and both are arguing different points. Just my thoughts.

When e3 comes, will they be able to show a game on Scorpio that looks graphically better than horizon looks on pro? They've been building scorpio hype for a long time now and soon enough it will meet the reality. They need a game.

Crackdown 3 is the likely contender.

Difference is, those were predictions made before they launched, not during.

Even ignoring sales, last gen you had third party games that would later turn into multiplatform juggernauts like Mass Effect LEADING on 360. You had games like The Witness and Rocket League going with the proven marketplace on the MS platform instead of the late ports of this generation. You basically had all of the stupid exclusivity rights to early maps and DLC on 360. I will give them credit for the BC, the play anywhere stuff, but nearly everything else has been sorta shitty. ID at Xbox has been going for years now and I'm still unsure how that has improved anything for the consumer.

He's looking at the Mau's. Mau's don't lie. But definitely not looking at the sales.

Being in their position worldwide honestly can't be easy for the one in charge. I mean, there must be a ton of stress when the corporate overlords keep cancelling ip's and firing studios and making him tell everyone everything is ok, while he scrambes to figure out what he can show at E3 to showcase Scorpio.

That tweet was a bit reactionary though. Not like him.

23 pages in...Has anyone managed to objectively define "best" yet!? Once we've got that cracked then it'll be obvious which gen is/was best.

IMHo it's best because:-

At each point in lifetime they've sold more ones than 360s

There are a bunch of good One games AND most of the great 360 games are also playable so the total catalogue is better.

IMHO it's not the best because:-

The 360 did much better against the competition.

The 360 had MSs big IPs when they were newer e.g. GoW and Forza. The One doesn't have its equivalent of gears yet.

Fat chance. It would be a more apt comparison to crackdown tho and be showing against it at e3.

I know but you asked if anything could surpass Horizon, on PlayStation I don't think anything will until TLoU 2.

Crackdown is going to be pretty special in its own right though. Very different art styles as well and Crackdown being cell shaded too.

Going to be fun to watch and see :)

Well, let's look at what they have had.

Launch:
- Forza Horizon 3 or 4. By the numbers sequel.
- Ryse - Gorgeous looking QTE trash
- Dead Rising - By The numbers sequel

2014
TitanFall - Great third party exclusive
Sunset Overdrive - Great second party exclusive

2015
Halo 5 - By the numbers campaign. Decent multiplayer for fans of the series. Nothing groundbreaking even though it's the 6th entry in the franchise.
Tomb Raider - Great game but not sure if it should count since they basically bought it to keep it from appearing on PS4

2016
Quantum Break - Decent game. Nothing special.
Gears of War 4 - By the numbers sequel
Forza Horizon - Decent game.

I am sure i missed a few, but it's just not enough. Sony's lineup has been pretty barebones as well but they had their first great year last year and have a pretty crazy lineup set for the next few years. MS has pretty much nothing on the horizon. And here is the kicker, it wont improve unless they really spend some money acquiring studios instead of shutting them down or cancelling games left and right.

The whole way of thinking needs to change. But seeing as Phill is in denial, it doesnt look likely.

What makes it worse out of those 10 games listed is Ryse, Dead Rising, Titanfall, Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon are also on PC. Leaving only 3 - yes 3! - exclusive to the XB1 console.

Lack of exclusivity is bad news for a console.

I agree that the comments from Jason were a little unsettling, but I don't agree with Phil, at all on this. Xbox 360 was much, much superior to Xbox One.

Oh yes. Another member has found the hole is Phil's master plan.

In terms of practices, this really is their best gen yet. Play Anywhere was the best thing they've ever done, and it makes them a really based company.

In terms of games though.....Someone tell Microsoft to bring back Blinx.

I remember $599! Two jobs! CELL, Bluray!. All that power and fail.
Funny thing was that PS3 offered the better value over a 360 but Sony wasn't clever enough to market that point. Even though the 360 was cheaper, you had to buy the wireless adapter, HD DVD drive, and online multiplayer separately. All of those things were included for free in the PS3 price. But early on, 360 did have the PS3 beat in terms of games.

Criticism is fine, I criticise MS all the time, I'm the harshest on them out of the three if I have to be honest

But the moment I even remotely insinuate that maybe, just maybe the predictions of outright doom I've seen aren't really evidenced well, it turns into the 'my team/your team' bollocks.

My fucking god. NO, IT ISN'T. It disappeared because it was a gargantuan failure, that's it.

I swear some of you love to be deceived. "I love Phil but he's wrong here". Why do you love him exactly? He's often "wrong". And by "wrong" I mean shameless lying to people.
Whew lad.

Sony is running laps around them in Europe. Xbox One's only stronghold is here in the US, and they're in a distant second place even here.

They're just tok similar to the PS4, and they don't have strong enough exclusives. Halo has lost a lot of it's popularity.

As an early Xbox One adopter, that doesn't make me feel good about my Xbox One and my very useful Kinect. Similarly, hearing how good horizon zero dawn on Pro looks doesn't make me happy about my ps4. But if Scorpio is as powerful as it sounds, it is going to make Xbox One look bad.
