We didn't get our review copy of HW2 either despite that we worked with MS before and requested one. It turned out the PR person in charge quit and did not clean up his work lol.

Man those company commendation packs are shitty! Lol

Anyway, I understand Grenades was one of the last two we got (thanks Gringo), does anyone know the other?

Totally unrelated to the current discussion, but what do people think of the possibility that the next main line Halo game is Halo 5: *Subtitle*?

Halo 5: Halo 3: Anniversary Edition. Book it.

Seriously though, I think next one will be Halo 6.

Even if it substantially builds on the Halo 5 suite (which I think most people want) calling it Halo 5: Subtitle is setting up an "Halo 3: ODST is an expansion that costs $60?" scenario that's totally avoidable.

Halo 5: Reach 2: ODST Evolved

I dunno, hard to have feelings given the current state of Halo 5. What they should really do is just patch it, but if they want to include some interesting DLC: sure, whatever.

I'm trying to get back into Halo 5 and h1 mcc (usually get the itch to play after there's a LAN), but if anybody wants to add me for slayer, arena, and customs II cinco II (capitol I's) hit me up.

Did they ever explain why they decided to do this? Giving it a subtitle? I vaguely recall hearing they wanted to introduce the same naming scheme shenanigans the Assassin's Creed series decided to go with to get rid of numbered sequels altogether. Also to make room for games that don't have the Master Chief as its main character
like Halo 5 lol
:(

After the reception of Halo 5's campaign, I fully expect the next one to be Halo 6 with a heavy Master Chief focus again. Personally, I wouldn't mind a few side-missions as Locke or, preferably, the Arbiter.

I'd be fine with Halo5: whatever if it meant fixing the god awful narrative.

In fact, keep making H5 games until all the extended universe stuff makes sense to people who only play the games

I'm expecting Halo 6: something to be the next "mainline" title, but I could see them revisiting it in the future ODST-style - just not sequentially.

I figured the Guardians subtitle was to try and alleviate sequel fatigue a bit ("there's a halo 5 now?") as well as channeling Combat Evolved and, like some have said, move away from Chief a bit. for the love of god just let chief retire or become a mentor or something, him being hamfisted into the lead role is holding back the plot at this point imo

accidentally read this as "meteor" the first time. Made for a much more exciting proposal imo.

I asked twice in the Halo Wars thread but no one responded.

Why can't I download Halo Wars DE on pc? It's a digital game and supposed to be play anywhere so what's the issue here?

I got the physical deluxe edition but that shouldn't matter.

I don't think chief is holding the plot back- bad stories are doing that.

Chief wasn't the lead of Halo 5, hamfisted or otherwise.

It really doesn't matter who the lead is, as long as the story and campaign is good. H2, ODST, and Reach have already proven this.

Is the deluxe edition separate from the ultimate edition? Afaik, HW:DE only comes with the Ultimate edition.

I agree with this. There's only so much you can do with Chief if you make the only reason for him to exist be Cortana. Good writing can make him be more than the one dimensional "I have to get to Cortana".

I think what's holding back the plot is that it sucks.

I remember being so hyped to play as Chief on his own after that initial reveal trailer. Going on some kind of solo journey across the stars to fix things and solve some mysteries with giant Forerunner birds. Hell, the audio dramas were setting up some fucking amazing intrigue. Instead it just turns out Cortana found a new galactic death toy, Chief didn't really do anything besides say "lol no" when told to return, and Osiris was a boring group of newbs (minus you Buck you sassy fuck) being propped up in front of the all stars while 343 went "No really! They're totally just as cool and good at everything". We did see Sanghelios though so that was neat.

Kind of bummer but fuck it. Maybe Halo 6 will bring it back together and help me give a shit about these characters.

Chief's role in Hunt the Truth was soo badass. I was so ready to uncover an Oni plot while quelling a civil uprising and combating various ex-Covenant splinter groups jockeying for power on the post H3 galactic stage.

I'm not even mad the whole "looking for Cortana" / "Cortana is evil" plot exists. But it was woefully undercooked. I wish they would have gone with the Kilo-5, HTT political angle for H5, and let the "anomaly" angle develop as a Mysterious subplot with a big reveal in a later game.

Agreed. Would have been far more interesting and unique. People would have complained it wasn't "Halo", though. We can't have anything nice...

How the shit does Scorpio get reconfirmed for this year and no mainline Halo? Seems weird to me.

3 year dev cycle means Halo 6 is at the very least a 2018 title.

There will still be the announcement at E3 and there will most likely be a beta at the end of the year like Halo 5.

Coulda easily been more "halo" than H4 and H5. A couple exotic locales (Sanghelios, Venezia) + a Forunner installation or 2.

So much opportunity for interesting conflicts, particularly Venezia which is home to Humans, Grunts, Jackals, and Brutes living peacefully in unified hatred of Covenant and UNSC.

Woulda been much cooler to see a mixed-militia trying to turn the tide against UNSC by getting their hands on a Forunner artifact. Especially if Chief was torn between his duty to protect the greater good, whilst knowing that ONI always has evil tactics.

Instead we got to fight a bunch of Robots.

Also woulda been a great way to get folks up to speed on the EU.

Crackdown 3 with H5: Retcon Beta pls

For those of you who aren't planning to play Halo Wars 2, you should at least watch the Under the Dark cutscene from the game. It's phenomenal.

Personally, I don't think we need a retcon, or even any further retooling. H5 was a little bit of a mess, but it did an admirable job of setting up an interesting new status quo, with Chief, Arby, and the Infinity waging a guerilla war against Cortana. I'm down for seeing where that goes.

Yeah, this. I'm not a fan of retcons.

Oh make no mistake, I don't want a retcon. Sleep in the bed you make. But I will always think of the alternatives. Maybe after they defeat Space Stalin Cortana.

I think more stories could be told, but 343 hasn't made a game with a story that has a satisfying or meaningful conclusion yet. As a poster on Reddit brought up, 343 seems to have a fear of moving the franchise forward in any definitive manner. It feels like 40K, but instead of an entire millennium it's a span of six years.

Chew on this bit: There has been exactly one piece of Halo media released since 2009 that took place during the Human-Covenant War that was not a retelling of the Fall of Reach, and it's a comic in Tales from Slipspace. That's eight years without revisiting the conflict that defined the franchise in any meaningful way. Furthermore, there are still a myriad of interesting post-war stories to tell that no one is capitalizing on in any meaningful way.

I think one of the larger issues with 343i is their desire to set up a larger story with each game. Instead of focusing on a singular story and building out they're trying to do too much at once. As a result, their stories aren't very satisfying and the player is left questioning what the hell just happened. I greatly disliked the story in both 4 and 5. I never liked the idea of the Forerunners being any other than ancient and mysterious and they leaned heavily into fleshing out their backstory. Then there's the Prometheans who have just a terrible aesthetic that is jarring inside the Halo universe, I'd include the Guardians in this as well as they look very similar. We also went from Space Marines to Space Power rangers with the Spartans. With 6, they don't have to perform a retcon, but they need to take a step back and really identify what Halo is. Halo Wars 2 at least seems to be a step in the right direction, though I haven't beaten it yet.

For the record. I think a retcon would be a terrible idea. But I'm all for filling in plot holes.

I'd see it as more interesting if they didn't paint the main antagonist as an omniscient and omnipresent being with access to unstoppable power. Not to mention the other AIs joining her.

It's just corny, IMO.

I feel like whatever 343 cooks up to even the odds will be as contrived as the entire Forunner saga has been this far. I'd love to be wrong but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I messed up the name. I got the physical Halo Wars 2 Ultimate edition and entered the Halo Wars Definitive edition/season pass code. I am able to play it on Xbox but it doesn't show up as I own it on the Windows store.

I don't really see the connection between "battling nigh insurmountable odds" and "it's just corny," tbh. Like, those two things don't seem to be related to each other.

I'd also point out that Cortana's not omniscient or omnipresent; she's wherever a connected human or forerunner terminal is, true, and she's very very very smart, but that's not the same as either of those. In a way, it's sort of an extrapolation of what it's got to be like to fight a modern developed nation as a resistance force. Their resources and knowledge gathering capacity vastly outstrips your own. If they can pin you down, that's that.

I can see the appeal there.

when it comes to her principal enemy, she is essentially omnipresent and omnicient.

Omniscient: She has just about all of their AI, and with it their entire knowledge base: there locations, their logistics, their tactics. Remember when the Covenant would have been happy to get their hands on just one AI? Now the bad guy has all of them. It's corny.

Omnipresent: Again, if she can be at any terminal, for all intents and purposes she her goonies can be anywhere our hero's are at a moments notice. No doubt, they'll have to come up with some currently unknown limits to her power so that they can build a game around it, but it's likely to be forced given what we know AI like Cortana are SHOULD BE capable of according established lore when it comes to multitasking and multi-locating. We see her (and BB) do some CRAZY shit before she had access to the domain. Now there's that crazy shit on steroids to contend with ...

Seemingly insurmountable odds are not inherently corny. But what makes such stories interesting is when the antagonists weaknesses and the protagonists strengths are well established and believable. That's what we had with the UNSC, the Covenant and the Flood. And I haven't seen any of that foundation being built in H4 or 5. The "plucked out of thin air" nature of this conflict and its odds is what is corny to me. Can't wait for another Dues Ex Machina to even the odds like in H4 /s

Really doesn't feel like a good "resistance force" story is brewing. I love a good, " they got the guns, but we know the terrain" story. But it appears they got the guns AND know the terrain, if the established lore is anything to go by. I'd love for them to create a compelling story and honor everything that's come before, but I just don't see it.
