So I went to T-Mobile to check out the deals on the V20/S7, and not only do you need to have T-Mobile service already (that's expected), you also need to be a postpaid customer. If you're on prepaid, they won't give you the sale price, even when buying outright.

They can pry my $30 prepaid plan from my cold, dead hands.

WTF did Google do to Google now? I rarely update apps but today I ran a lot and my Google now cards are gone. There is nothing on the screen now but a search bar. It's shit like this that's going to drive me to Apple.

Go to your Google app under settings, clear the cache, force stop, then open the Google app manually. Should be back.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
what Bluetooth headphones is everyone getting with their iPhone 8?

the AirPods look stupid as fuck and i'm pretty sure i would lose one or both since the wired ones were never a good fit for my ears and they don't come in Black so i was thinking of going with the Beats X and MKBHD likes them but they're not water resistant at all...

Check out Floss. He's done a bunch of BT earbud reviews lately.

Any opinions out there? I've got a Note 4 and I'm eligible for upgrade on Verizon. I'm at the point where I have to charge my phone like 3-4 times a day. Should I hold out for the Galaxy 8 or go with a 7 Edge? I've seen the 8 and I'm unsure of what to think about the design changes.

I tried clearing cache and restarting the phone. I had to switch accounts in the app and restart to get it to work again.

ToyMachine, you can just get a new battery until you see what comes out.

JayBird X3's have made me a believer in wireless headphones. They sound good, tons of options for fitting them to your ear, you can tighten the tether so it's snug against the back of your head (like in the picture below) ... it's really amazing to be completely untethered and hardly even notice that you're wearing buds at all. Also nice for when somebody is talking to you you can pop one ear out and it can just hang there. The mic also works great for phone calls.

Pretty sure MKBHD did a review of them last year that sold me.

get an Anker Battery combo and wait for the Note 8.

That V20 price is great. Good deal for a good phone. Looking forward to hearing impressions.

I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing Apple in this thread. Particularly from me, as an Android switcher. I just wanted to give my insight as a recent switch. Didn't think it would annoy people. I think this thread is more tech inclined and less company inclined. If I talked too much about Android in the iOS thread, well, most people there have probably never entertained the idea of owning an Android phone. With all these amazing iPhone 8 rumors coming out, as a thread of tech enthusiasts, you gotta be at least a little bit interested in switching from Android.

Android Wear desperately needs a Taptics sort of thing. It is amazing on Apple Watch. I have to sell my Sony Smartwatch 3, but now I bet the value has dropped since the NFC on it is never being put into use since no Wear 2.0. So weak.

When is that Samsung tablet coming out? Do we not know?

I don't mind iPhone talk here - it's good to get impressions from both sides.

I also enjoyed seeing Osiris going into an iPhone thread and defending stock Android as if it were his mother

Not even slightly. I don't hate Apple, but to do stuff like run emulators like I do all the time and even have a sweet organised home screen I'd have to jailbreak and the cat and mouse became too tiresome. I'd they ever open it up, I'll think about it, but for the amount I'd lose I may as well get a Windows phone.

As for the Samsung tablet, I think you're the second person to even mention a Samsung tablet in these threads, so I just don't think there's any interest to keep track.

Look, I mostly agree as a tech enthusiast. This has become more of an iPhone 8 thread than an Android thread, though. That's all I'm saying.

Exactly. I have owned an iPhone before. A few of them. I talked my wife into trying it. She did and initially liked it before running back to Android due to its closed nature.

They'd have to change a whole lot for me to consider.

Iphone is good for benchmarks and camera and the occasional app like snap chat thats ass on Android.

Everything else not really my jam from notifications to file management to even scroll speed.

Will take you an hour to scroll down a gaf thread in 100 posts per page view.

OnePlus is my only Android hope this year.

On a side note Intel announced a new modem. Oh and look it has CDMA support. In theory it wouldn't be integrated obviously, but I wonder if companies who make their on chips would jump on this.

An Intel modem could mean Samsung would never have to use a Qualcomm chip ever again.

I just got a pair of the Jaybird X2's since they were cheaper and I didn't care too much about the additional features of the X3. Still getting used to them (they're a little heavy, but I haven't tried the rubber wing things yet. One of the main reasons I went with X2's is because it still has a micro USB port in it, the X3's have a dongle for charging that I'm afraid I'd lose.

If I don't like the X2's I might return them to Amazon and pay a little extra for the X3's since I hear the earbuds themselves are smaller and probably more comfortable. (I still need to work out with them in to really test how comfortable they are).

I wasn't even going to get a wireless pair of headphones, but if more phone companies start to remove the headphone jack (or I really do decide to switch to iPhone) I wanted to at least have the option.

there are several people that have mentioned owning a Tab S or Tab S2, it' just that tablets are dead anyway.

Not sure how I feel about the scanner on the front. While I like the placement on my 5X, being able to use it while the phone is flat on a table is a good thing. Personally the biggest issue with the P10 is the camera not competing with Samsung and Google because of its non-functioning HDR setting and smaller aperture. This of course is going off the thought that the P10 camera will likely be the same as the Mate 9.

Want to be clear the issue with the scanner on the front is all the features Huawei packs into their scanner such as making it a launch button and being able to use it to scroll.

My Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge got a super awesome update earlier and I feel like the phone has increased in quality! :) Does anybody know the exact details of the update?

Well the Tab S2 is like 2 years old. So of course talk about old shit is dead. Google hasn't released anything since the Pixel C months ago either.

This could reignite some vigor into the space.

It's all about the Leica look. So yeah stuff will be more natural in color, purposely grainy at times.

The question is if people want that or not.

Why would an OEM buy a Qualcomm SOC and use an Intel modem?

I'm coming around on oneplus lately. I personally wouldn't get their phone until they made a smaller one but I think they do an amazing job given what you get for the price. And apparently they've been much better with updates and customer service has been a bit better. Points of improvement are still support of old devices (one plus x lol) and also making their phone easier to buy.

I've said it before but the phones I'm most excited to see this year are the OnePlus 4 to see how they step things up, Pixel 2 for obvious reasons, lots to live up to, and iphone 8 because it currently sounds too good to be true.

Everything else I pretty much know what to expect and it's not all that exciting to me.

I for one am happy we are finally seeing a move towards small bezels. They have been getting ridiculous and I can't believe both Pixel and iPhones have had such giant bezels with such little backlash.

Nougat?

I know my S7 feels like it's running better after updating to Nougat.
Yep, the Nougat update did wonders for performance and (so far) battery life. Everything just feels much snappier and I'm starting to get used to the new notifications.

i believe the implication was that Samsung would use their own Exynos SoC, however the poster didn't remember that Samsung has their own modem series, Shannon.

Samsung would still have to pay for the patent bullshit with Qualcomm in the US though. I think from what I've read you don't have to if you use the Intel model.

The big get is that the Intel modem does CDMA.

Odd situation, but since I finally have a smartphone that I'm also using as a phone rather than just a wi-fi device, I'm finding that the thing seems to be really finicky about what volume I'm changing when I hit the physical volume control buttons. In general, I could only really see myself needing to change the media volume, and if I needed to do anything with the ringer, it would be just to silence it for when I'm in meetings, movies, etc. However, the phone seems to always want to default to ringer volume if I use the buttons while not actively listening to any media.

Is there any setting in Android 6.0 that would change that functionality or are there any apps that can alter the controls?

Also another little quirk, but when I plug my phone into a cassette adapter I use in my car, sometimes the volume menu pops up and says something about alarms and whatnot, and it becomes difficult to change volumes, and the phone will somehow block me from using the power button to put it back into standby after I've started some music. I have no idea what it's doing.
