Harvest Moon 64 also hitting the North American Wii U Virtual Console on Thursday

Didn't they say that Harvest Moon 64 was "impossible to emulate?" :p

Anyways, since I never had the heart to erase my save file and shared the cartridge with my siblings I never got to re-play it. Will be downloading this.

I think it is, but is HM64 the same version as HM Back to Nature on the PS1? If so, that is really awesome, because outside of Story of Seasons, Back to Nature is my favorite of the ones I have played.

HM64 had the best character e5ories and back stories. The social interactions were pretty interesting and there was a level of depth in them. All recent harvest moon games you'd swear they were all robots.

I also loved that feeling of how hard you had to work to get an item to decorate your house with before everything became so customizable. Fond memories of hm64. Karen still the best though. Then Maria. Maria on her wedding day tho....

I remember hearing that while Back to Nature has a similar visual style, that it was a very different game.

I am so happy to hear this news though, because I'll finally have a way to play this game again. It's the first and only HM game that ever really hooked me, and I haven't played it since it came out.

Majora's Mask = Harvest Moon? What?

So what was the reason this wasn't released beforehand? I thought it was some compatibility error?

At least with the original Wii they said there were 'transfer issues' going on. I read some mumblings about the source code getting damaged but can't find anything on that again.

It's crazy that this is finally happening. I remember asking for this like eight years ago.

Harvest Moon 64 was my favorite game as a kid. It is the best game in the series by far. I hope it is also coming to the Switch soon. :)

Yep. I really wish there were more games like Harvest Moon 64 that had that level of depth and care taken in the character design. :(

Harvest Moon 64 was the first game that I played near 24 hour runs. Food, shower, and bathroom breaks were had of course but damn, summer time as a kid was so nice!

Now, the question is whether to buy this on the Wii U now or hold off and see if it will be on the Switch. I can wait.

I deeply hope we see HM64 on the Switch... with where I am right now, I can't justify owning both consoles. :(
I want mothafucking HM on Switch so badly. Give me HM64 or HMBtN, I don't care. Just give me one of the GoAT twins.

Will never forget the awe and wonder I had the summer I bought HM64.

Gotcha, thanks for the heads up.

BTN on Vita is great. I have to be careful not to play it in bed or I'll lose 5 hours.

I remember this game being incredibly hard to find after its launch, to the point it became intensely rare—I really wanted it, likely after reading about it in Nintendo Power, but could never find it where I lived. Then I found it at a random store when I was on a road trip with my family (I think the next summer, in 2000?), and it became one of my most-played games.

If it makes it to Switch before Stardew (which I have not played), I might revisit.

I think they're implying that they're finally putting this out when Wii U Armageddon is in process. I swear, if Nintendo drip feeds VC games again on Switch, and doesn't simply offer some upgrade discounts for existing game owners, I'm gonna be so upset.

They should just do what Sony have done and just not bother bringing old stuff to their new console at all. ;)

Switch please! Please. Nintendo. Get your act together. Launch Switch VC with the existing 3DS/Wii-U VC library. You have/had plenty of time to figure it out with Hudson, Konami and Capcom.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

you think this has even the slightest chance of happening?

please be excited for the reboot and drip feed.

You can't exactly just expect them to plop the entire Virtual Console library onto the eShop on day one; that's just bad business sense.

I've only ever played Harvest Moon 64 for a couple of minutes. What makes it better than Friends of Mineral Town?

I've mentioned it in my post above but:

Best characters - they have the most depth and their backstories are pretty interesting. Way better than any recent HM game and better than friends of mineral town was.

Secrets/Easter eggs - I feel like to get those nice and cool items to decorate your house or whatever other ones you have to put in a bit of work. Cool things to find and you have to work hard to get certain things which makes them more valuable and the game more fun.

The town/world is better designed in this one compared to the efficient but straight forward FoMT design.

You will lose some niceties as FoMT did come out plenty later.

Best Harvest Moon and ud live to have it on more modern hardware, but I can't see investing any more into VC until I know how this is all going to work on Switch (and it's seeming like we won't know at launch).

And I just bought Stardew Valley.

I started a new game like 15 times because I loved the whole start of it all.

Back to Nature and FoMT have a lot more mechanical goodies and more areas to explore, not to mention more complex farm expansions.

But 64 has far, far stronger writing for each and every character. Also, the layout of the world and its geography really makes you feel like you're in a Japanese hamlet, whereas other HM towns could be dropped anywhere.

This is the one where "Natsume" is misspelled on the title screen, right? [edit: yep]

Can't wait to get into this again. Last time I played it was in 1999 and was unfortunately just a rental. Never had more fun with a Harvest Moon game before (not counting Stardew Valley).

Countless, countless hours of playing HM64 and I never noticed that. Wow.

I'm not expecting them to plop anything that isn't already there. They're calling the service on the Switch eShop also, so I'm expecting them to bring my eShop library over. You don't see Apple drip feeding games onto the App Store whenever they put out a new iPhone, or iPad.

Wii generation sucked with the drip feed, but it was the first time, so it was sorta expected.

Wii U generation sucked all over again with the drip feed, but they were updating their service, and they hadn't created the unified eShop/NNID system on the previous generation, so they kinda had to start fresh.

Switch is bringing over existing elements that are already in place on the Wii U. My games are linked to my account now. This isn't a new store front they're putting out, but an extension of what already was there. To say "they can't just put games out for it all at once" is inaccurate. The games are already out there! Just let people keep their fucking libraries.
