Mass Effect: Andromeda - Previews and hands-on impressions

It's funny that the press pretty much acted like there was no reason to be mad at the end of Mass Effect 3 when in reality the entire story was horrendous. You'd have to be blind to not see that the story was a huge step down from 2, which was already hugely flawed.

I think what I've seen of Andromeda so far looks like it's gonna be just as bad, but in a different way. Laughable cutscenes and characters being released. Hopefully the combat will be fun (it doesn't look more fun than 1-3 so far, especially with AI squad control and different profiles), and the graphics are good, but I'm not enthused with the direction they're going at all. It feels even more like a corporate product than the series ever did before, and the premise is completely crazy. These guys are like, 620 years old and everyone they knew is dead. lol, ok.

Regardless of my personal critique, the hype for this game could be way higher than it is, and everyone knows it.

On Neogaf? Perhaps. But then again, a very large contingent of people seem to have a genuine vested interest in shitting on anything Bioware related at every turn possible, which gives most Bioware threads a reputation as a toxic shitfest that regular people tend to stay out of.

If we look at the views on their youtube videos, they're doing fine with the mainstream public.

Also, why are you still harping on the "journey to Andromeda" thing? It's a perfectly fine premise, and within the realm of science fiction, nothing out of the ordinary. Your complaint is analogous to you hearing a preview of The Fellowship of the Ring that says "It's about a hobbit called Frodo, and he's bestowed the task to take the One ring to Mordor, the very seat of evil!" and going "That doesn't make any sense! Why would he even want to go in the first place! Couldn't he just throw the ring away, why does he have to go all the way to Mordor for that!". The marketing is not the game, and you're not really supposed to know the motivations for each individual character to undertake this trip beyond "Alec Ryder was the first through the Charon relay, so he's just that type of guy".

Gunplay looks terrible, but I've come to expect it from ME.

I think it looks fantastic, along with the varied tech/biotic/kinetic stuff....what's not to like? It is an ARPG after all....not a pure shooter.

Curious as to why you think it looks terrible.

Have they discussed dlc yet? I am a little worried that this is going to be a $150 game, here in Canada.

No season pass confirmed, and no DLC talked about as yet - hoping at least the MP DLC is all free like last time, that was pretty much amazing and ME3's saving grave.

Nope, no save importing. All you can do is specify whether your Shepard was male or female during the character creation.

Hmmm. So I will probably get this on PS4.

My PC is way too old, so I'm glad I don't need to use my old save games.

What's there skeptical about? It's same ol ME you're either like it or you don't.

Have you played the trilogy?
That's a silly thing to say.

A lot of people liked ME2 but not 3.
And some people liked ME1 but didn't really care for where 2 or 3 went.

All of them have been very different.

Man I cannot wait for this game. Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and these previews are making me feel a lot better on this one. Very excited to get my hands on this in less than a month

Agreed on all counts. Love me some ME2, and I'm really intrigued by Andromeda.

Adept all day, every day.

That's pretty much a given, considering loot crates are also back. The multiplayer, so far, seems to be pretty much an improved ME3 MP.

I feel this is definitely a game where you want to wait on reviews.

It's hopefully good. But I am not completely convinced. Could go either way.

Dragon age inquisition got good reviews.

This is a game which you will either hate or have already preordered because you know how much you will love it. I don't see any surprises here.

Same ol ME could mean a broken rpg, a bland semi rpg/shooter or a shooter. You can still like all three if you enjoy games based on the marketing budget but there is more to the series then just one homogeneous game.

Look no further to the aforementioned dragon age series for exactly how it will turn out for "good old fans".

Yeah, just like Ubisoft. People really hate them with a passion.

Yup. People already forget that DA Inquisition got 89 on Metacritic.

See how that turned out now. Just make a DAI thread and the usual comments will flow in.

That scene doesn't look bad when you, I dunno, actually get to see the thing in motion instead of cherry-picked screenshots.

Very much looking forward to this game, combat looks fantastic.

I will echo some of the sentiment posted on this thread regarding the faces and their animation: doesn't look appealing. I would love to see what this game could have looked like using Unreal Engine 4. Not saying faces and facial animations would have been better, but in ME3 I don't remember them being to this level.

When people keep saying something feels off on the facial animations, it's not that everybody is out to get the game.I'm looking forward to it, the game engine looks fine, but the faces I've seen in the trailer so far have had some hilarious ones.

I seriously hope they have extra costumes for each character, my main team will probably be Pebee (if she is not like Sera from inquisition behaving like a 5 years old kid with stupid dialogue ) and the new specie cat like alien xD but i hate their costumes so much. I expect them to have a extra one at least or that woud be lame ...

Okay. But there's technically nothing wrong with Ryder's face there. Whoever screencapped it chose one frame of what you can obviously see is his face registering different expressions in the animation. Looks like surprise to me.

As for Peebee, she looks fine to me, Dreamworks face or otherwise.

I have to admit it's almost more creepy in the moving gif, as Ryder's face very abruptly snaps between two extreme expressions with very little inbetween. Maybe there needs to be a bit more follow through on the expressions, not sure. PeeBee's face moves a lot more naturally.

His face goes slack and his eyes widen quickly from realizing Peebee is on top of him. Seems okay. It's like my favorite anime scenarios.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
That Gif looks.....pretty bad.

Interest in PB has been steadily dropping faster than Ryder's facial expression change, lol.

Not sure how I feel about this "jack of all trades" approach to combat and character building. At this point I'm not even sure what the point of having different class deliniations other than to provide a few stat boosts.

Gifs don't capture every frame, you'd have to check the trailer to see if the transition is smooth.
