Angry Video Game Nerd

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Speaking of Bootsy.. he tweeted that there are no let's play plans for him in the near future :(
That's a shame. I really don't care for Ryan much so I rarely watch the vids with him and Mike, but it seems like there are more and more of those lately.

James and Mike are doing Sonic 2 for multiple parts. However, it's odd that:

James didn't know that if you stay on a stage for 10 minutes you die.

Didn't know about getting 100 rings to get an extra life.

Didn't know that collecting the 7 Chaos Emeralds make you become Super Sonic and alternates the ending!

Remember, James said this is his favorite game on the Genesis!

I still liked the vid though and can't wait to see what happens next.

The 10 minute thing, I could probably excuse. I think I discovered that via the damn barrel in Sonic 3 or Sandopolis Act 2 in S&K when I was a kid.

MAYBE he was thinking of Sonic 1's chaos emeralds considering you couldn't turn into Super Sonic in that game?

.....it's a 16-bit platformer, 100 collectibles = life. It's been like that in most Sonic games. Even the last one, Sonic Lost World, had it.....once Sega patched it in eventually....

I understand maybe forgetting a few things for a game you probably haven't played in a long time, but I feel like some of those aren't that excusable (i.e. 100 rings/coins/etc. = extra life) if you grew up in the 8/16 bit era.

I knew about the time limit thing since Sonic 1.

Well, he didn't mention Sonic 1 when it came to the Chaos Emeralds. And even if he didn't know that you can be Super Sonic in Sonic 2, there would still be a purpose of collecting them as Super Sonic comes in the ending as well. In Sonic 1 not getting them all will have the game tell you to get them all for a better ending as Robotnik holds all those emeralds.

All I'm saying is that pretty much anyone who played it a lot, said it's one of their fave games on the system and even did a little research(just a little) would know what's the purpose of collecting those emeralds. When he didn't know what the chaos emeralds were for, I was surprised since normally Sonic fans(like him) would know about that.

Oh yeah, I totally agree, if he said it's one of his favorite games ever but had no idea what the items THAT YOU WERE TRYING TO COLLECT do, then that seems very odd. I just wanted to offer another view point just so it didn't seem like I was jumping on them for not knowing such things.

I'm used to them not knowing much when it comes to anything past PS360 era stuff, but the NES/Genesis/SNES era seems to be when he was into games the most, so seems odd he wouldn't know rather basic things, especially for a game he claims is one of his favorites.

I was holding back my Sonic 2 thoughts on this thread because I feel I am cynical sometimes while watching anything on Cinemassacre, so thanks for posting!

Ok, so the rings part... on stage 1, he had 98 rings. He had a chance to get 100 rings right before the end of the stage, and didn't bother. I find this funny because right before stage 1, he said that they want to play to beat the game so why the heck wouldn't he go for the extra life? https://youtu.be/IM5gOCUUqoo?t=1m5s

The whole time issue was hilarious - https://youtu.be/IM5gOCUUqoo?t=14m41s

But, hey it's his all-time favorite Sega Genesis game!

Could he not just play as tails alone and fly up to that thing he said was a mystery for him? It's been ages since I played Sonic 2 but I seem to recall that being an option.

See this is why I think the name change way back was a bad idea (yeah yeah, worried Nintendo would sue him or whatever). It gives people the impression that he ever really played anything but Nintendo games back in the day. It's always been blatantly obvious he was a classic Nintendo fanboy, but because he's the video game nerd and not the Nintendo nerd people expect him to know anything about non Nintendo games without researching (which they explicitly don't do for j&m Mondays - it's the entire point).

Look, Bonk's Adventure is my favourite tg16 game of all time and I think it's awesome.

I played it at a mall demo station once for 15 minutes.

James should do a video where Mike explains to him what the Nintendo Switch is. AFAIK, James has no clue what Nintendo's next console is.

Be humorous to see James's take on it.

I think I can relate to James in this situation. I had Nintendo everything growing up and my friend had Sega. So, I never played Sonic until I went over to his house. And my friend never played Super Mario World so we would visit each other's home and play. We never had both consoles. It was one or the other. I think James might feel the same way. He loves Sonic 2 but has the inexperience to collect the chaos emeralds. No excuse for not getting 100 rings though. I think it's great that his genuine inexperience came out on the video.

I'm the same way. Sonic 2 is my favorite Genesis game. What the hell is Super Sonic?

You can tell it's a game that James is very familiar with because he was able to make it out of the first stage. He's not too good at games.

No lie, Sonic 2 is one of the 1st games I got for Sega Genesis(though I played the 1st Sonic at a friend's house before then) and is still one of my faves on the whole system, so I played it a lot and discovered things as I played it more. Even back as a kid I knew about Super Sonic and tried my best to get the Chaos Emeralds, though I discovered later on about being able to transform into Super Sonic even during the stage and actually managed to achieve that as I remembered doing it. I learned about the Chaos Emeralds back in Sonic 1 when the ending screen said "Try Again" as Robotnik holds those 6 emeralds so I did try again actually!

Part of the fun is experiencing and discovering it yourself, yes. Like even back when I had Streets of Rage 2 I knew about Up+C to avoid damage from throws. It is vital to know that so you won't be taking damage a lot and dying more often. It really does help to learn stuff like that to make the game better for you.

I know the point of James and Mike Mondays is to experience games just for the hell of it, and they succeed in that. I mean, if it's a game you never played before or hardly played it, I can understand making mistakes and not knowing what the game is about as you need to experience it more and maybe even research it. But to play a game you love, is your fave on the system, played it a lot and not know about things that doesn't take too much learning to do is a little odd, but everyone is different so I can't complain too much, though not knowing about extra lives after 100 rings is still hilarious.

I am a huge fan of Sonic 2 so that's why I got startled by this.=p

Thing is, he clearly did know about the extra lives thing, he just didn't remember in the moment (about a game he presumably hasn't played in like 20 years, no less) which particular counter led to it. There were a lot of games back then where points gave you extra lives, so it's not exactly a shocking thing to not remember.

The point is that something being your favourite is not the same as you being some kind of fanboy for it.

Mike and James Monday - Knuckles' Chaotix

https://youtu.be/xKN-utkoNCs

Their 32X hookup issues was interesting. I don't remember having issues when I was 12 hooking up the 32X with my Genesis Model 1 and Sega CD model 1. Everything just worked, and it's funny hearing the comments about the struggle with 3 power adapters. As a kid, I never thought twice about it. I thought it was just a joke for the old AVGN.

Besides, Mike and James should get the Sega Trio cable that combines all 3 into one!

Pretty weird he never watched power rangers at the time given how he loves monster stuff.

Probably was a little too old for it. Also the first season aired on weekday mornings initially, so he probably would have missed that.

I remember watching it in the library at elementary school since class didn't start until after 8, but the bus dropped us off at 7:30ish.

I'm a year older than James, and I watched Mighty Morphin ;)

Only watched the original series though. Never got into Dino/Ninja/Turbo or whatever came next.

And I'm a year Younger and while I HAVE watched it it wasn't a thing I 'watched' nor anyone else I knew. I don't think it's unfair to say anyone in junior high or older would not have necessarily been exposed to power rangers in the way someone even a couple years younger would have.

Same with Pokemon. I only know pokemon through osmosis, it came out when I was in high school and looked stupid as fuck to me as a COOL 16 year old.

I'm a year younger as well, didn't know Power Rangers had anything to do with monsters, and didn't think it was possible to be enjoyed by adults. I thought at the time and still thought to this day that it was just something for little kids like Barney. This video was surprising to me.

Same goes for Pokemon.

I was 16/17 when the Pokemon anime premiered, and at first I probably thought "WTF is this?" then I grew to love it (along with the games), and imported some of the music CD's from Japan.

The Power Rangers video was really entertaining and funny BTW, to see James' natural reaction mixed with the full on Nerd personality xD
Can't wait for Part 2.

These clowns finally played a Sonic game? Never thought the day would come.

I really can't get into any of the non James cinemassacre vids. Like Mike is fucking annoying. That tubby fuck is personality less and Bootsy is an idiot.

Like that episode about the Genesis pnp where they liked it and said it was better than the nesc when it doesn't even emulate sound properly.

Do not watch the newest Mike and Ryan then. Especially if you don't like Ryan.

It started off that way, but it evolved into so much more. I enjoy both approaches, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss James' straight up board game review/showcase style of Board James season 1.

If I didn't have an e-mail account, I would not be aware that Mike is playing through Breath of the Wild.

Maybe.. 30 e-mails that he has uploaded/started streaming the game since Friday, lol.
