Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Welp. I decided to take my switch out of the dock to try this usb c to ethernet adapter trick I heard about on Reddit when my Switch squeaked as I was raising it. I feared the worse, and sure enough...

I guess it's a good thing that I plan to use this as mostly an old fashioned home console. Bums me out though. I really am careful with things.

I'm so sorry. What a mess.

I used the foam packaging from the console itself, like many in here have to add some extra padding, and there is no way my Switch is going to fit in there now. Not enough space. It's not going in the dock until I get those glass screen protectors.

I took a lightly moistened micro fiber cloth and tried to wipe them off. Whatever they are, they are staying.

I had the same kind of marks in the same place due to the rubber thingies and they required considerably more effort to remove compared to fingerprints but they did disappear and it's like new now, perhaps yours was docked for far longer than mine? After that I saw this thread, applied electrical tape twice on each side and it seems to be fine now. Oh btw, I just used my t-shirt (clean one directly after taking a shower) to wipe the screen, it doesn't leave any scratches or anything. This is how I cleaned my Wii U gamepad every time lol

So weird reading about this with a Nintendo console. They have been nearly flawless in this regard.

I had this aswell, but it mostly seems to be the pad's gunk. I removed it with a cloth easily and there's no scratches.

Looks like smudge rather than scratches. Have you tried wiping it?

EDIT: Noticed that you said you already tried that.

Living in Europe and bought the Bigben glass protector at 15 €. I was shocked that it's thick but I am happy with this.

I had a bit of trouble putting the switch in the dock earlier. Don't want to remove it to see if I caused any damage.

What when/if you need to replace your glass screen protector? Would removing it leave some marks/damage on the plastic underneath? I'm not sure how it works but I'm guessing it's some type of adhesive? It's not a problem when it's glass on glass but not sure how plastic would be affected after removing the protector... Enlighten me people.

I've seen it suggested in a thread before, but has there been any word on whether you can use a USB-C extension cable with the dock?

That would be a simple solution for me.

Well, I seriously hope that it's like with all the DS family or the WiiU gamepad... those have plastic screens too... so no damage of any sort. I didn't have any problem removing the screen protector on some ds or the 3ds...

Isn't it possible to take the front piece apart?

I mean not necessarily to keep it out but for easier access to rig it etc

What a shame iFixit didn't take it completely down like that, just went for the electronics.

My first post at Neogaf! I've broken radio silence after three years because of the infuriating misinterpretations in this thread.

Sticking felt / cushioning to the inside of the dock will INCREASE the potential for scratching the screen:

1. Over time, felt and textile materials can easily attract and hold dust particles. Tiny particles of dust can on a micro level be abrasive, sand like and scratch the screen.

2. Cushioning the inside of the dock with textile material will make the space in the dock tighter for Switch to fit inside, and thus magnifying the chances of scratching.

Having spent a few years working closely with industrial designers, I would say that Nintendo's decision not to include soft material in the dock is absolutely right -- even though this may at first seem unintuitive. As for the plastic of the dock scratching the screen, I doubt it and I'm sure this has been rigorously tested by Nintendo.

I find this post is hilarious on multiple levels.

I actually really appreciate this. It's why I kept warning against it in the other thread. What are your toughts on a thin layer of electrical tape? (My reasoning is that is at least easy to clean, microfiber/Felt once placed would essentially be unclean-able.) That's been my current solution until we can get very thin silicon/rubber material like the Switch Dock has at the bottom.

That being said all the options we've taken are without a doubt better than exposing it to the rough plastic ridges on the Switch. We know that doesn't cause just micro abrasions. It can tear your screen up.

Schrodinger's Switch.

I really do hope Nintendo release an upgraded dock model or something.

You people realize the shit switch screen is gonna get damaged from virtually ANYTHING it comes in contact with.

Microfiber included, bags, cases...

Buy a 10 dollars tempered glass protector and make sure your 300 purchase doesn't go to waste.

Then maybe the gap should have been larger in the dock.

Small margin of error at the moment.

If that's the case then the plastic for then plastic should have been smoother instead of being abrasive.

Nintendo's solution might have been "wiser", it's still a shitty design as it does result in scratching. The right solution was to redesign the fucking dock.

That being said, care to share your expertise with us and help us come up with a satisfying solution that wouldn't make things worse ?

Good post that opened my eyes.

What would be your recommendation for the dock's design to decrease the chance of scratching the screen, based on your experiences? Widening the gap? Some other kind of material on the inside? A flap for the Switch?

Is is an option to just remove / cut off the face of the dock? Don't know if it will be pretty or possible but I didn't see that suggested as a fix yet.

The fact that the Switch sits vertically in the dock would make that a pretty precarious proposition. You'd have very little keeping it from just falling straight out the front. Of course, if you leaned the dock back somehow, you'd be golden. Honestly, that's probably how the dock should have been designed in the first place; pretty much the same as a Wii U Gamepad charging cradle:

Hopefully there'll be a relatively inexpensive third-party version before long, because I don't particularly feel like Dremeling into my overpriced official dock :p

To be honest, I don't get why Nintendo didn't totally make it like the Wii U Gamepad cradly. It worked perfectly fine... it's easier to remove/insert the system, you never ever miss the right spot because you can see where you are going. Only possible explanation I could think of is that Nintendo wanted to make sure that people don't think this is some kind of Wii U extension ("See, they have this new gamepad for the Wii U).

Why does the handheld part have to go into a dock with two sides anyway? When docked the screen is blank anyway.
They should have just had nothing on the screen side - like iPod docks on stereos.

That's what I was thinking of for a possible revision. Just an open thing at the front like the old iPod speakers.

Im thinking about buying this one too, can you take a picture of the screen with the glass protector?
I want to see how the glass edges fit with the switch. Thanks!

All they needed to do was make the dock a little wider so it wasn't so tight. I really don't want to stick it in the dock at all....
