Horizon Zero Dawn |OT| The Land After Time

I've been playing this really slowly over the last week or so and only just made it "past the gate." I wasn't really digging it until things opened up and the story took an interesting turn.

The arena-like battle at the gate was a lot of fun. It feels a little silly crafting ammo and gathering resources in the middle of a fight but figuring out weaknesses and strategies was a lot of fun. I only imagine combat gets bigger and more intense from here.

As others have mentioned dialog is not this game's strength, the voice acting is inconsistent and the lip syncing issues are distracting. I tend to just read subtitles and skip listening to the full audio, which I never normally do in games. Aloy's VA is excellent however.

One thing I'm not super impressed by yet are the graphics. I was expecting to be blown away because of all the gushing I've seen here and elsewhere but I haven't been yet. The environments look nice for sure but not some huge leap over stuff Naughty Dog has done on the PS4. And for an open world game the environments feel very closed off - no big vistas or large landmarks you can see from far away and then travel to. I feel like you never see more than a few hundred meters away because of mountains or trees that conveniently wall off your view, or just fog.

The dinos look great though. The designs and animations are top-notch.

Anyway I'm harping on the negatives but the gameplay is awesome and I am very curious to see where this story goes.

Sounds like you just finished the first area. You're going to see some cool open vistas. And some fast moving weather that you haven't encountered yet. The environments are truly outstanding.

Damn! I'm level 24 and haven't gone there yet but I've also not gone west of the Nora's lands. Probably going to start exploring out west of Daytower tonight since I don't have anything left to do that I can see to the east.

The suggested level for the main quest is 12.. I'm level 40. :p

I feel like I have barely done anything story wise and I have been playing for quite a bit I just met the Sun King and I really hope
he doesn't turn out to be an asshole he seems reasonable after our first meeting

I loved traversing the world so much that by simply doing whatever was closest to me ended up leading me to doing everything except main and side missions ! This game man, this game.
I hear you on this, this game is too beautiful and you just naturally wanna explore it all. I mentally had to stop myself from doing this in the beginning because knowing me, I'd be 50 hours in and no mainline/side quests done lol.

I've had maximum Corruption damage mods in my War Bow so I can essentially 1 arrow any enemy to corrupt them, but I think I may switch to maxing Freeze and/Shock instead.

I only ever use Corruption really to open engagements and mostly from safety, so I can easily double or triple up on the Corruption arrows for similar effect.

All cauldrons, bandit camps and corruption zones cleared along with every collectible and vantage point found and all carrying capacities upgraded to their max - I guess it's time to go to Meridian.

Lol. Almost the same situation for me. I still have one collectible to go (ancient vessel) cause it is near the main story objective that is part of Meridian and I didn't want to do it yet. When getting collectibles I found more sidequests that I am doing now. I love that sidequests are just in random places that you don't seem to need to go to in the middle of nowhere. Once I do those I will probably try some of the time trial stuff. I'm about level 43 right now.

Corruptors have a unique overheat debuff (you can see the symbol over their heads), and when you put them on fire enough they'll expose their cores and you can shoot those for massive damage.

Well I guess that my problem then...I just dont see that exposed core...you guys rescan stuff in the middle of a fight...?

The reason it may seem difficult is because the learning curve in the game isn't really point/level based, it's skilled base. Even when you hit level 35 or 40, you can still get one-hit killed without the proper gear on or strategy. I've been playing on very hard, and while I was dispatching smaller enemies away with ease, I would die too often whenever I got surrounding by smarter robots. I thought it was just due to me not killing them quick enough, but the name of the game to never die in Horizon - Preparation.
It feels like those two elements fight each other too much. Preparation before a fight can undermine any sense of challenge. Going in with melee demonstrates the low skill ceiling because you're going to be dealing with one-two hit kills, constant staggering, and all of this from different angles that the camera struggles to keep up with.

Did not know this, I will definitely try this out when I get the game.
It's an easy way to kill everything. Traps need a profile of some sort. Multiple traps should be easier for machines to detect and in particular multiples of the same type of trap.

There are lots of options. I normally stuck to Freeze because it kept me shooting stuff and shooting is fun. However, controlling is just as easy. Lure as many enemies as possible for your stick, call in your mount and then corrupt something. Stand back and watch everyone go crazy.

90 % down to 5 %...? now thats what I call a nerf lol...

It was never meant to be 90%. The base damage reduction was actually 10%, and they nerfed it to 5%. That 90% damage reduction was bugged.

Also, I am glad they reduced ThunderJaw Disc Launcher ammo to 8. Ammo capacity of 12 felt a lot given the damage it was doing to ThunderJaw, and often felt unchallenging to me.

Thought this was interesting, John Carpenter tweeted about Horizon:

Just popped this into my PS4 Amateur now and I'm blown away by how good this looks. When this gen started, this is what I had in mind when it came to next-gen graphics. What a masterpiece.

And little Aloy is awesome. Didn't think twice about where to throw that rock.

I somehow managed to get to lvl 50, and it seems I'm only like 50-60% through they main story. Can someone please confirm this?

Spoilers ahead, story.

I'm at the quest after fighting in the sun ring, my objective is going back to Nora Land and the mountain.

Haven't finished the game yet but that sounds like 75% of the main story.

Ah ok, thanks :).

It's like when I reached max lvl in Fallout 4 before I did one quest in the main story chain haha.

I'm two main quest ahead of you and it seems there's only one or two left. I'm not lvl 50 yet but 47 and 56hs in so... I know what you mean haha.

If you have trouble to see what parts are vulnerable, you can aim at a machine and quickly turn your focus on/off mid-fight, then the vulnerable parts on the machine will stay highlighted for a while after you turned your focus off, making it easier to see what to aim for.

You should see some sort of stun icon above the Corrupter and the core will raise up just above it's head. Need to feed it quite a bit of fire before the core comes up.

Can anyone help me out on the side quest "A moments peace"?

I'm at the Banuk Camp and talked to some people. My next step would be:

"Investigate the Banuk Camp
Search for signals with you Focus"

But I don't see ANYTHING...
What am I missing?

You should be able to see a pulsing signal (just like tallnecks) with your focus, that's where you have to go

Is the ropecaster supposed to put the end of the rope right at your feet or is there a way to choose where it anchors?

It's automatic.

Not sure if posted already. Patch 1.03 notes:

We’re pleased to announce that Patch 1.03 for Horizon Zero Dawn has been released today. This patch fixes a number of progression issues and crashes.

Fixes

• Fixed a crash that could occur during “The Heart of the Nora”, after getting killed by the corrupted Thunderjaw at All-Mother’s entrance.

• Fixed an issue where the game would crash on “The Curse to Darkness” when left idle for a few minutes, after selecting continue from the Main Menu.

• Fixed a crash that would occur during “Revenge of the Nora” when the player would be killed by the Bellowback.

• Fixed a crash that could occur when the player was killed by the Behemoth during “The Terror of the Sun” quest.

• Fixed an issue where the loading screen would hang after viewing the cutscene after the credits.

• Fixed a progression issue during “Deep Secrets of the Earth” where Aloy could not re-enter the secret entrance after fast traveling out.

• Fixed an issue where Aloy was able to mount machines with heavy weapons equipped.

• Fixed an issue where bandits would spawn inside the mountain during Bandit Camp “Two Teeth”.

• Fixed an issue where you could already scan the datapoint “Record of Redmaw 2” spoiling the quest.

• Fixed an issue where tracks wouldn’t be highlighted unless het player was at a certain distance.

• Fixed a crash with Hunting Grounds 1 when in combat with the Grazers.

• Fixed an issue where the quest icon would display the incorrect quest when finishing “Gift from the Past” and transitioning to “The Point of the Spear”.

• Fixed an issue where Vanasha wasn’t appearing to activate the “Traitor’s Bounty” quest.

• Fixed an issue during “The City of the Sun” where Erend wouldn’t spawn correctly.

• Fixed an issue where the Override icon wouldn’t always show on overridden machines.

• Fixed an issue where players would accidentally skip the cinematic during “A Gift from the Past”.

• Fixed an issue during “The War Chiefs Trail” where the player could not interact with Sona after fast traveling.

Please download Patch 1.03 and let us know what you think. We’ll continue to work on further enhancements to Horizon Zero Dawn based on your comments. In the meantime, keep an eye on this space for the latest news and updates

The tracks highlighting should work correctly now, which is the one I noticed most.

There's a wall you can climb toward the back of the camp that will take you where you need to go.

so do higher tiers of weapons (green->blue->purple) have access to more types of ammo, or just different types of ammo?

I ask because I got a blue tripcaster and I have shock and blast traps on it now, I assume because its blue over my old green one?

also this sniper type bow does SO much more damage than the...err... other type of bow, its not even funny. It says its only for long range, but I sue it at close range aswell and it still wrecks /shrug #longbowlife

Is the
Carja Sharpshot Bow
A good Bow still using my default one

thats the one im talking about lol. Are we really spoiler tagging weapon names? come on...

That's what I've guessed, but nothing. Maybe it's just borked on my end.

It's automatic.

Will give it a try, thanks!

Edit:

Found nothing and looked up a video online.

You have to almost go out of the camp and look at the mountains...
They was kinda dumb.

Yes, the weapon upgrades only add more ammo types. You'll start off by juggling weapons based on the enemies you're fighting (eg blast sling and carja sling) but will eventually be able to equip all of them on one weapon (shadow sling).

Played this game all weekend, think im level 22 and just got the
Meridian, and I've searched Onin's (think that was his name) house and broke the floor. How far into the main story am I?

Probably not going to get chance to play this til the weekend now :(

I'll spoiler this just in case:

There's 21 main story missions so if you look at your stats you can see how far through (roughly) you are.

The Banuk quest was an excellent example of this. Empty tundra for ages then...WTF?

Which is the more satisfying sound: The metallic ropecaster wire impact, or the bass vroom of tearblast arrows? I love these weapons!

Try standing near the entrance of the camp and look upwards with your focus.

As a cheapskate, my favourite sound is the twang of recycling an unused tripcaster wire. Hurray for thrift!

I'm 35 hours in, finished most of the side quests and errands and I'm just about to start the last few missions. Fantastic game, I was fighting some goddamn glinthawks at night on top of a mesa and I'm STILL just in awe of how good the game looks and controls.

I hate those scavenger robot birds. I was busy dealing with four tramplers, and there they came, ice shards falling from the sky. And they took my loot!

Glinthawks are a fantastic example of the long tradition of cheapass, infuriating flying enemies in games. Until I got an upgraded ropecaster they were almost literally unkillable for me, and even now that I steamroll everything this side of a thunderjaw I still hate them.
