Comedy is sexist, comedy and jokes are a lot of things you don't like. There maybe some comedy that doesn't punch down but where is the fun in that? It's not as good as the comedy that punches down.

You're say humour against say, the rich, is objectively inferior to humour that targets the poor. That it's funnier to joke about women and minorities than men

That's true. I've always said that jokes are only funny when they are attacking people less fortunate than I am. I mean finding humour in places where people *don't* feel ostracised? Can you even call that humour??

One of the things I found most offensive about Colin's original tweet was how lazy it was. He's a guy who is at a comedic focused outlet and he used the most bottom of the barrel joke he could think of. And people are falling all over themselves to defend it as being genuinely funny. Like if this is so funny go and find an old joke book from the 80's at a used bookstore and you'll probably shit yourself thirty times reading the first page.

How the hell did you ever come to that conclusion after reading what he said?

(Edit) apologies, I misread.

What's with people's obsession over "having other's backs" and "loyalty".
If you're being a dick, i'll say you're being a dick, no matter if you're my best friend, my dad or my partner.
It's called having a tight knit group of friends man, most people have each other's backs. Maybe you never ran with a crowd of people you came up with before so you can't relate but it's not an obsession it's people speaking from their experiences in life.

So are people giving Colin the PewDiePie treatment by claiming he is a comedian? When you have to reach for a defense it's probably a sign that it should not be defended. No one is calling for his resignation just the acknowledgement of his actions. No one is discussing the comedic value of his comment but his intentions. The only reason we are now commenting about comedy is due to these poorly worded and thought out points people are bringing up to defend Colin.

yup, when someone makes a bad / racist / sexist joke, they're instantly a comedian and therefore protected by the "comedy / satire is allowed to do that" clause.

It's called having a tight knit group of friends man, most people have each other's backs. Maybe you never ran with a crowd of people you came up with before so you can't relate but it's not an obsession it's people speaking from their experiences in life.

I have plenty of great friends. As opposed to blindly defending me, they help me grow as a person by pointing out when i'm being a dickhead.

......because that's what he said.

Do you know what comedy that punches down means?

He said the joke was sexist, it was objectively sexist and the only humour in the joke is to be found in how it's ironic to say something sexist on national women's day? Why are you feeling the need to over-react to this the comment?

No light sexist jokes are ever allowed ever again. All men who joke about girls being naggy and loud need to be crucified.

By the way, I jokingly told my mate the other day that all guys think with their dick, I'm assuming that joke isn't allowed either.

Hey what do I know, last time I posted here I got hoarded out of this thread by a bunch of guys. Lord knows a girls opinion isn't allowed on this.

*patiently awaits another response saying it wasn't about the joke, despite the myriad of posts before this that defend the original outrage over the joke*

Humor knows no boundaries
Punching down to me means putting something down in general. Stop putting words in my mouth, you can punch down the rich, the wealthy, white people, anyone. Comedy thrives on insults, not just insulting the less fortunate.

Edit - ok apparently punch down does not mean what I thought it means.

What I want to convey is nobody is safe in comedy.

It's not about the joke *in a vacuum*. How is this so difficult for people to understand. It's about making the joke on the day he made it

You telling your friend some garbage, boring joke in private is a lot different than a very public figure like Colin tweeting it out to the world. What you think is funny is entirely irrelevant to the conversation as you are not a universal barometer of comedy that decides what can and cannot offend people.

The lack of empathy in this thread is mind-boggling

I'm going to be honest here: it's hard for me to understand how other people have been legitimately offended in any way whatsoever over this.

This doesn't mean that I shouldn't/or strive to understand...

Personally, it takes an awful lot to offend me - I have very thick skin. I also consider myself to be a fairly empathetic person but trying to suppose someone else's feelings and reactions to stimuli when they're so alien from your own is hard.

I know a lot of you are young, passionate and righteous and more power to you... keep fighting that good fight but this just doesn't feel that important to "me"... there are so many other battles that we should be waging.

Consider the forum: neogaf, twitter, Facebook... whatever. They're all predicated on being seen to be saying something. I think we're whipping each other up into a call-and-response shitstorm that has resulted in some absolutely horrible behaviour.

Colin's joke was shit - no question. It's equally horrible to be called "humourless sacks off shit" as well... nobody is saying this is great behaviour but some of the vitriol I've seen in response is just staggering.

This community embarrasses me sometimes.

I'm patiently waiting for you to make sense.

  • People acknowledge that Colin's joke was sexist especially on International Women Day
  • People called him out for it on Twitter
  • He doubles down and insults people
  • People on GAF discuss his actions and how they are hypocritical because he insulted others and began to play the victim after baiting responses
  • In order to discuss what happened people on GAF explain how his joke was perceived and why he received the initial pushback before he doubled down, and how his actions before shows a pattern

Here's your homework, read my bulleted list. Reread the last bullet. And then respond if you want to.

If you make a sexist joke and the other person tells "that offended me" you should apologize instead of insulting them.

Context is important. Messing around with your friends saying stupid shit is different from being a prominent person making a bad joke on an important day that fights the same type of behavior he showed.

It's not about being "comedy". He isn't a comic and he wasn't performing an act. He said a dumb joke on twitter.

And, worse than the joke was his reaction to people saying it was in poor taste.

If you offend people you should apologize and try not to offend him. Not double down on it.

The post I responded to attempted to claim that a person said Colin should be universally shunned for making a joke when the reality is the poster just said Colin made a sexist joke and people should be aloud to criticise him for saying it.

I could get into why I think telling sexist jokes to a young impressionable fanbase is harmful, especially given in recent history the entire GG fiasco has proved this kind of thing is an issue, but nothing I said in that post eluded to if I personally think sexist jokes are wrong or not.

So defend, and by proxy approve, of stupid behaviour in public, telling your audience that you think this is okay, but then say that it isn't okay in private?

You're right that's a wonderful way to conduct business

"Colin, Tim, Nick, and I discussed this at length behind closed doors. This isn't the first disagreement we've had and it certainly won't be the last, but we won't allow it to come between our commitment to each other and the business at large. Let's put this behind us and move on to PAX."

Probably would have played better, but I'm just spitballing.

The difference is that you said it in private to your friend, not online, and not as a somewhat public figure. I say outrageous shit all the time to my friends, I don't consider myself a bad person because of it. Would I post any of it online to people who don't know me? Hell no.

I should add that my own reaction to the tweet was: "oh, that's not cool on on International women's day... whatever'. I was hardly running for my pitchfork.

This "he's not a comedian" argument is a bit blurry... he's a professional multimedia celebrity that works for a company called "kinda funny". He appears live in front of people with a microphone and makes people laugh.

I can see how someone in that position could become confused into thinking that they're "always on" and say stuff on twitter that is forced and misses the mark.

I love this notion that people who think Colin's full of shit about this are "humorless." By and large we're not. Plenty of us even enjoy offensive humor, I know I do. But there's a way to tell offensive humor that's much more interesting than this. People keep saying "Louis CK (or choose your favorite comedian) does this," which completely ignores the way in which those comedians tell a joke and who the joke is actually about. This is a lazy, hackneyed joke and the fact he can't at least acknowledge that the joke and timing sucked should be a red flag.

Here's a bit of Louis CK joking about kids dying, soldiers getting killed and slavery.
It's hilarious, and I don't see people getting up in arms about it. Why not? Because he's actually telling jokes about those things, not just saying "Hey women are loud, am I right?"

Saying something's "just a joke" doesn't free it from any sort of critical analysis. Comedians can joke about anything they want, obviously, but when they're as lazy and incompetent about it as Colin, they deserve to be called out, and when they can't handle criticism at all and start retweeting Glenn Beck, that's considerably more troubling and probably indicative of more serious issues.

And I don't think people would have nearly as big a problem with this if he had just said that rather than calling people who criticized him pieces of shit, saying everyone who didn't like the joke was humorless, and looking into going on Glenn Beck's show.

Greg had his ass blasted by some of the people he was trying to pander to: https://twitter.com/Spacekatgal/status/839889642489057285

He chose to embrace the people who don't like Colin to begin with rather than stand by his long-time friend. Colin would go to the fucking mat for Greg. He's defended Tim and Kevin on numerous occasions and complemented what they bring to the table.

Loyalty isn't something Colin takes lightly if you've listened to him before. When the business crumbles and your fans and "friends" in the industry turn away, you better hope you can still turn to the person who's been with you through it all.

Lot of finger-waving here from people who would stumble over their words if they ever encountered Colin in person. Lot of pussies online who are virtue signaling in the hopes that their white-knighting will score their unattractive asses a hot date with a disrespected KF babe!

Your boy das Colin made a lame joke. I didn't laugh, but I didn't shit myself either. I went to class and then work like a functioning human instead of spending all day on twitter screaming about how much respect they've lost for Colin. Ask yourself: does this truly affect you? Did Colin truly harm anyone with his lame joke? Or were people looking for a reason to confirm a previously held opinion: "Colin is toxic and he doesn't have a place in the games bubble."
Here the thing, I like Colin as much as the next guy( probably a little more than the people on this thread though), the problem now is not the tweet. The problem is the reaction to everything. He has put his friends and fans in a awkward position over a stupid little joke. People are now going after Greg , Tim and other fans cause of this and that's not right. I know Colin reads this, Colin you don't even have to apologise. Just tell people to stop speaking for you and you don't approve of it cause this is going to affect more than just your livelyhood but your closest friends.

Colin was being a troll, which is behaviour that I find repugnant. He's been getting worse in this regard for some time.

He could've made any joke about any subject. If the intent of it is to shit stir, hurt feelings and cause the shitstorm that he knew it would - it's a gross thing to do that should absolutely be called out. This was simply the straw that broke the camel's back.

We're not talking about someone being persecuted or their cutting edge comedy being censored. As has been said, "worse" things have been said on their show.

It's not about his politics, he's done fine for years (if controversially) despite his conservative views. It's about him constantly goading a section of his audience and peers that he doesn't feel in line with, fully aware of the response he'll get. It's spiteful and immature, and antithetical both to Kinda Funny's ethos and his own calls for reasonable discussion.

So no, I don't think many people were genuinely offended by the literal content of the joke, rather the purpose behind it. People aren't stupid, and neither is Colin. Everyone knows why this went down how it did and could have seen this coming a mile off.

The only people making it solely about "offence" are those wanting to make it an issue of PC gone mad to make people who don't like Colinms behaviour seem hysterical. The issue is trolls fucking suck and make the internet a worse place to be.

Almost feels like a good cop, bad cop situation. They've publicly disagreed with each other, and taken a stance. This means people on either side will feel like they have someone empathizing with them. For their purposes, this should result in the least amount of lost support, as opposed to all of them doubling down in either direction which would piss off one side entirely.

i.e. "I think x is pathetic, but y really seems to be a principled guy who I want to keep supporting."

Greg's post was FIVE paragraphs and read like a dad apologizing for his son. "I hope Colin thinks before he makes a joke on his own Twitter."

I really didn't think much of Greg's apology at first, but it does seem overboard, no? There is a sweet spot. Greg's write-up might have been appropriate if Colin had just posted a sexist rant. In this context, though, he may have over-cooked this one.

Fair enough, it was just a thought. It seems to me that this stuff will fade away over time if they can keep people at least interested. If they go all in one way or the other it seems like they'd take a larger initial hit of people just noping out and not giving it a second thought.

This is all good. Especially the part about the jokes purpose, he was clearly trying to annoy people and then smack them down.

I used to like Colin during Beyond but apparently he's just slid into a position of trolling feminists and civil rights activists which is just sad.

Also I call out my friends when they said sexist shit.

One thing we can all agree upon I think is that next episode is going to be something.

How long do they address it for? A quick 5 minutes "it happened, moving on"

Does Greg sit there and defend his friendship with Colin and encourages him to get things off his chest.

I almost feel like Colin should say something now instead of letting it fester until next Tuesday, but who knows what he will say on that Glenn Beck radio show today, he could make the situation ten times worse.

Fans will never be homogenised. Different opinions are a thing, and every community is going to have hundreds if not thousands of different people in it.

Didn't know this topic had gone totally to Colin talk, but for what it's worth I gave my 2 cents in the community thread. Guy should probably split off and do something political now (he keeps saying politics are his real passion), or at least on his own, then he only answers for himself. Which like it or not you kind of need to do these days, if you're on a team and you do things the team might not agree with, instead of it being a difference of stances/opinions, this is where the fans do swoop in and turn everything into a bloodbath.

Fair enough. If the goal of Greg's post was to unite the community, I'm contending that it was a poor one, and offering how it could have been better. It's obviously a pointless exercise, and hindsight is 20/20. We simply have a friendly disagreement. No harm, no foul.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
So Colin didn't apologise, has no doubt doubled down and is now actively involving himself with the political internet nut show crowd all while his actions have fully activated the 'deplorable' side of the 'Best Friends'.

At least Arin got rid of Jontron at the right time, huh.

Anybody notice the people in this thread supporting Colin keep ignoring the points of the people they're debating with? Kinda like a certain Colin M who also ignores the arguments of others when debating...

How thick do you have to be to believe that people are "outraged" over the joke? Even despite dozens of people in this thread explaining that, that isn't the issue! If you're not going to bother reading and just keep screaming "DON'T GET OUTRAGED AT A JOKE" you clearly aren't even attempting to understand the situation.

You guys really took that international women's day thing pretty seriously huh

You can just say that you have no real point and just want to defend Colin for reasons

They believe being purposefully dense will muddle the conversation enough but people aren't stupid.

We now live in an age where men aren't allowed to make "women, am I right guys?" jokes anymore.

I am glad all those white knights on twitter came to our rescue when Colin made that joke. My poor fragile feminine heart just couldn't handle the sexist tyranny.

apparently your "fragile feminine heart" can't handle the "sexist tyranny"
